According to "The Handbook of Poetic Forms," Robert Kelly invented the Lune out of a dissatisfaction with our Western use of Haiku. Since English says things in fewer syllables than Japanese, he reasoned that a shorter English pattern would be appropriate to haiku-size thoughts. I like this form much better than Haiku.
