The Smart One by Ellen Meister is a book about three sisters and their struggle to live together despite their very contrasting differences. It is also a book filled with suspense and humor, and I personally had to giggle out loud quite a few times while reading this entertaining novel.
Throughout the book we explore the way the three sisters grew up, their difference and the struggle between them in competing for their parents' approval. They each have their own role in the family, Clare the eldest of the three is the beautiful one, Bev, the middle sister is the smart one, and the youngest sister Joey is the wild one.
We follow the sisters throughout one summer, where they learn to accept and live with each other's good and bad sides, while they realize that they are all envious of each others talents and qualities. Throughout the discovery journey they travel back down memory lane to their childhood, and the childhood catches up with them through the reappearance of the now grown neighbors' son Kenny.
I usually read when I am on the exercise bike, which means that I can typically judge a book on the amount of time that I end up riding the bike.
It started of a little slow, and I only spent 25 minutes the first day reading, but the next day I ended up with 30 minutes. Then all of a sudden the suspense hit a catapult, and I got enthralled in the excitement of the book. I spent the next day riding the bike for 80 minutes, and the day I finished the novel, I could not put it down, so I ended up with a whopping 10 mile ride in 100 minutes. I did not beat any records, but I sure enjoyed the ride along with Bev, Joey and Clare.
I can highly recommend The Smart One, as it is a funny and captivating novel, it is an easy read, and once you get through the first chapters, it will keep your attention to the end.

I have heard many good things about this book, so I've put it on my books to read list. :)
Thanks for reading THE SMART ONE and for this insightful and positive review!
Thank you Ellen for reading and commenting on the review as well, it is an honor to receive feedback from a talented writer like yourself. I will definitely be looking for your other work, as I really enjoyed your writing style as well as the story you told.
Reading while on an exercise bike? You are an amazing woman:) Sounds like a great summer read.
Gwen, it sure was a funny one.
Rose, I am afraid the multitasking will be get me one day, but so far it's the only way for me to fit everything in:) I have decided to stick with reading and exercising though as I last 10 pounds during the past two weeks.....which is a first for me. Now, if Gather would just keep sending me interesting books, maybe I'll be back to my college weight in no time:)
Seriously, I feel like my energy levels have changed the past few months, and I hope to keep it up, as I feel like I have been in a slump for ever since I moved to Denmark to take care of my mom.
i am afraid if I tried to live with my sister, it would be a tale of murder!
