I picked up this book "Bee Season" by Myla Goldberg for no apparent reason other than perhaps I liked the color of the binding. I read the description and thought it might be an interesting "quick" read.
It was a fascinating character study of a family going four separate directions and the "Spelling Bee" that unites the father and daughter for a brief period of time.
The mother in this story is one of the most fascinating characters I have seen in black and white and the colorful visual images of her and her journey I imagined in my mind were equally as intriguing as when protrayed by the beautiful Juliette Binoche in the film adaptation.
Some liberties were taken for the big, or in this case small, screen when I watched this on DVD, but few took away from the general telling of these complex characters' stories.
I recommend reading the book AND seeing the movie but really can not suggest which to do first.
I like the images I create while reading but the directors (Scott McGehee & David Siegel) and the actors portraying the father (Richard Gere) and the daughter (the adorable Flora Cross) brought their own twist to the magic of story telling.
