By Jill Conner Browne with Karin Gillespie
I have to get straight to the point. I was disappointed.
To be fair I LOVE the Sweet Potato series. I laughed out loud reading Jill’s hilarious autobiography/biographies about the quirky lives of these saucy southern ladies. Of course there are the recipes! Definitely not a diet book! I recommended them to my friends and the occasional stranger or “friend I haven’t met yet” who enjoy expressing their sassy side. For those who may be just a bit timid…I recommend you read these books and learn some tricks for putting yourself out there and living a fun filled life!
But her first attempt at fiction…Well, it was a rip off. I mean rip off in the sense that she basically used all the funny stuff from her nonfiction series and just plugged it in to her fiction story and, in my opinion, it just wasn’t as funny. Most of the story was predictable. What am I saying…ALL of the story was predictable!
And the “Rest in Peace” cookbook is a complete RIP OFF of “Being Dead is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral” by Charlotte Hays and Gayden Metcaffe (see my review).
I felt like I had read this book before and had it been by another author, I would have stopped reading it just short of the first chapter. But since it was Jill Conner Browne and since I went to her book signing and since I recommended this book to my book club…I stuck with it.
It was a complete waste of my time.
If by some chance, Jill Conner Browne actually reads this review…I believe you should stick to nonfiction. Your own life is precious and unique. You earned your devoted fans and queenly wannabees by sharing with us the real life adventures of you and your friends with your uplifting and inspiring sense of humor.
And for the bad parts of this novel…just blame it ALL on Karin Gillespie!
