If you have a Labrador retriever, Golden or just about any big, goofy, neurotic but loveable dog you will understand why this book was on the New York Times best seller list for so long.
Grab a box of tissues and be prepared to laugh until you cry or just plain cry!
There is much more to experience with this book that a big dopey dog story. It is a story about relationships with family and friends of which we all can relate and the decisions we all must make one way or another that affect our lives as well as our loved ones.
Kudos to Mr. Grogan for sharing such a human story with not only the loyal fans of his column but a new “breed” of fans as well.
On a more personal note:
My husband bought me this book last Christmas. We have had three Labradors (two yellow and one chocolate) and now have a half Weimaraner half Labrador that is brown so he fell for the book’s cover immediately! We shared in the reading of this book, he would read to me when he was at home and when he was away for work (he’s a pilot) I would read it to him over the phone. There were times when I was so tickled I could hardly speak the words and then there were times I was so touched I could hardly speak the words.
My book club just finished reading this book so I scanned through it again and picked out some of my favorite passages especially from the chapter “The Things He Ate” of which our first Lab, K.D. (short for Killer Dog) had a similar talent or should I say taste. Our book club meeting quickly changed focus from Marley to our own beasties(including cats, rabbits and even guinea pigs) that share or have shared our lives. We quickly changed the subject when our eyes began to glisten to what our next book would be.
