Why I love rock-n-roll & why do you? Who's your favorite?

So you want to know how come I am a rocker?

Well, first of all I view Rock music as the ultimate form of rebellion there is. Back in the 1950's when such musical luminaries as Elvis Presley. Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, etc... were out and were popular, all of the adults said "Oh you kids and your rock-n-roll...what's this world coming to?"

Can you imagine what they all would have said in the 70's when bands such as KISS and Alice Cooper came onto the scene? I can just about imagine, can't you? Like, in the scene from "That 70's show" where Fez's parents hold up Kiss's "Destroyer" album and call it "The music of the DEVIL!".......if only they knew!!

When I was a teenager, I pretty much listened to what I wanted. I am very stubborn, and wouldn't have it any other way. So, Imagine my surpise over my so called "devil" music one day. I let my friend borrow my Def Leopard tape. I went to pick her up the next morning to walk to school. Before I even rang the doorbell i heard screaming. I rang anyway (call it the stupidity of youth). My friends sister answered and I was witness to my friends mom ripping MY tape up in little pieces and stomping on it. She screamed at her daughter, then zeroed in on me. She yelled "How could you dare let the devil into this house?!?" To which, I quickly retreated. Though I was pissed at my tape being destroyed, no way was I competing with the crazy look in her eyes....lol Even as a teenager, I wasn't that stupid!

Oddly enough though, I view that as being hysterical now. And, even then, I think incidents like that made me like rock even more! 

When I was younger, in grade school, you weren't cool unless you liked Quiet Riots "Come on feel the noize", or Aerosmith, or Motley Crue, or Def Leopard, or Twisted Sister, or AC DC, or etc.....

I've always liked rock-n-roll. When I was a kid, I think it was just to freak out older people. It was so much fun. But, it really grew on me, and though I like many other genres of music, I believe I am a rocker at heart.

So that's my story, and I am sticking to it! Why do you love rock?

I also like it because of its rebelliousness. regarding favorites, the songs run the gamut. However, one I like, perhaps because it's thematic, is "I love Rock n' Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

AC/DC all the way!!! Sounds you and I are from the same generation. I still love my rock & roll, but they now call it classic rock? We are not that old!!! AD/DC, Def Lepard, Ronnie James Dio, Van Halen(before Roth left), Areosmith. Just to name a very few.

Rebellion is as much an exhibition of ignorance as hysteria. But that is just my opinion. I like most music, but rock music, to me, is more creative and expressive than some.

Real Rock N Roll is great because it evokes memories of my well spent youth, Beatles, CCR, Eagles with a little Elvis in there for spirit

I liked the Beatles and the Rolling Stones but was also keen on Motown like Diana Ross and the Supremes. During much of the seventies I liked Disco music (yes I know, I know).

I must of been a rebel about the same time as you. Do you remember if you played Led Zep backwards you would here bad things. I loved ACDC, Van Halen, Judas Priest, The Doors, Oh man the list could go on.

Rock was good when it actually was rebelling against the establishment. Now it IS the establishment. Has been for decades. Now rebelion is a teenager liking classical music.
That's why I can't answer the question of who my favorite rock artist/band is. Al us old fogies talking about what rock music we like. It's expected. We're going to like that music because that's what we grew up with.

I like rock, but certainly not for rebellion. Being a rocker is not being different, its just conforming to a new set of rules. But you know what? I dont like rock to stand out, I just like it cuz its ROCK'n' ROLL!!!!

Too many to choose! My very first concert was Def Leppard in 1983. I will add Van Halen the original group. Led Zeppelin!!!!! I loved AC DC but For Those About to Rock was the last album I liked. The Who, The Police, and U2 ( their albums from the 1980's)

I don't know if I necessarily have a favorite rock band, but there are lots and lots of songs I like, spanning from the 1950's to now. My first rock concert was Journey back in 1983. My dad took me for my twelfth birthday.

This is a great article I loved all of the music Quiet Riot was the bomb with Cum on Feel The Noise when I was in grade school that song was the greatest. I can't belive that woman said that Def Lepard was music of the devil they never played to hard. I liked them alot myself. I also liked Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbeth and by his self. I like older music like Jerry Lee Lewis. My father use to play him alot on the piano.

Being in my late fifties I was prime age for the invasion of The Beatles into American homes and airwaves...My brother who was 3 years older than I saw my "Meet the Beatles" album and promptly began to laugh...he pronounced it Meet the Beat-less...and argued endlessly that he was right...(now that I think about it...where was he when they were being announced on the radio or on the Ed Sullivan Show....??????) Anyway I still today belt out the tunes of Cream, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Z., ZZ Top, all of Motown, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Play, U2...and many more...Long live rock and roll and all of us that support it!!!
I still crank Def Leopard up on my ipod in my minivan! (Pour some sugar on me!) and ACDC. I used to joke that AC/DC was incredibly patriotic. For example, in You Shook Me All Night Long they are talking about American Thighs.

Oh and Dawne, I have a word for you - ok three - New Kids on the Block ::giggles:: I still haven't forgotten the horror of coming home from college and finding my little sis listening to them.

I like ac/dc and now I listen to classic rock all the time. I don't know what they call the stuff of today but it sure is different from what I am used to.

Shel, that was Heather's influence. I pretended to like them, while I really only had a crush on the oldest one, well because he was the oldest and least interested in the group, I guess.

Hey girl, you sang John Denver to my daughter. You have NO room to talk......(giggling hysterically and falling on the floor now). JOHN DENVER???

Well good article.You got some biggies listed in there.I would have to use three pages to list my faves,because there are so many excellent musicians old and new.I can name a few that I listen and play to,like Carlos Santana,Led Zepplin,Tragically Hip,Hendrix,Johnny Winter and maybe a little of the Clash.

Never did like any of the Hard rock , but I can still remember listening to "bubble gum rock" back in the mid 70's. Our bus driver had a tape that he played over and over again every day . Funny now though I can't remember a single title.
Shelley - I don't think John Denver did much rock - that song is either folk or country !

Def Leppard & Aerosmith! Def Leppard I loved in High School and can remember when & where I was when I heard their 1st song from their Hysteria album on the radio (my room w/my sister's boyfriend). Aerosmith I loved after I went to one of their concerts where Skid Row opened. I went to see Skid Row but ended up not liking them so much after the concert and absolutely loving Aerosmith. But for me to like any kind of music, I have to like what the lyrics are saying and the way the music sounds.

I dig the 50's and early 60's...For me there is no greater sound than that golden era of music.
Check out "Big Joe Turner", "Chuck Willis", "Ivory Joe Hunter", "Roy Hamilton", "Clyde McPhatter", "Johnny Ace", "Lavern Baker", "Five Satins", "Frankie Lymon" and those Cats at Sun Records and you'll know what i'm talkin' about...Real Music!

i love rock.. always have.. i started loving music when i was just 11.. Def lep.. first fave band! however my taste greatly changed over the years.. I went from the rock of the 80's into the new stuff of the 90's with bands like Korn, Mudvayne.. ect.. now i still love rock.. only christian rock.. which is the same thing but not all the vulgarity ect.... kinda like a diet coke.. same taste without the stuff i don't want!
