So, there I was on itunes. My plan was simple. I was going to buy my son the new Hinder Song, "Lips of an Angel." I've seen the video a million times. Imagine then my surprise when I saw the song labeled explicit. “Gee, I thought, they must have really high standards of decency on here.”
Then I had a memory of what happened a few years ago when I downloaded Gwen Stefani’s, “Holloback girl.” I laughed when I saw explicit and downloaded it. So there I was, in my minivan with my two boys. My sons hate Gwen Stefani’s music, so of course I thought a little mommy torture was in order. I start the song and well, I was very unpleasantly surprised. The boys on the other hand thought it was hilarious.
So with that in mind, I went looking for a clean version. But, it got me wondering. Why are artists releasing clean and dirty versions of their music? Is this something that went on before the advent of the ipod and downloaded music? If the song sells as a clean song on MTV and VH-1 I’m not sure why they’d dirty it up.
To make a long story short, I know own both versions of “Holloback Girl.” I downloaded the clean version of the Hinder song. But I’m still baffled by why they do that. I wonder how many parents will buy their kids explicit lyrics on accident this Christmas.

No, seriously though, it went on WAY before ipod and downloads.
I don't understand it either. I do know, though, that most kids that get the clean versions just end up singing and filling in the dirty words, because their friends all have them!
Speaking of Nine Inch Nails, when my daughter was in junior high I was chauffering her and some friends. The song "I Want to F**k You Like an Animal" came on the radio. My daughter said "Dad, it's "I Want to F**k You Like an Animal." I said something like "Oh, cool." Her friends' jaws dropped. She grew up to be a law abiding citizen.
Don't pointedly offer it, but don't FREAK out if they know the lyrics.
I had a friend in high school. She borrowed a cassette tape of mine. I believe it was Motley Crue. Her mom found it, while i was there, and flipped. She screamed "Do't bring the devil in my house" then smashed it with a hammer. I was so mad. What gave her the right to smash a tape she knew wasn't her daughters?
I made sure her daughter had a continuous supply of it from that day forward.
I was mean....
