Being libertarian I realized a long time ago that corruption runs rampant through both major parties. There is an old saying something along the line of absolute power corrupting absolutely. I wish I could remember the exact quote, or even who said it.ÂÂÂ
I am, of course, against the federal government setting a mandatory minimum wage. I was disturbed when I heard it had passed the house. But, what was more disturbing was that the government was exempting certain businesses from the bill. Now, you might be thinking, oh good for them they are going to save the mom and pops. But, you'd thinking wrongly. I was astonished as I read further along to find that Star-Kist, which is owned by Delmont, which has headquarters in Nancy PelosiÃ's district, is being made exempt. This brought to mind another quote from the book Animal Farm "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."
What are the tuna workers to think? Clearly, their plight is as important as anyone else's. Clearly, they should be afforded equal protection. Why are we making bills we claim to be so detrimental, that leave out portions of the population? Of course Pelosi claims the companies didn't lobby her. You don't have to be lobbied to know what you need to do to gain favor.
This is one of the reasons I'm against the government sticking its grubby little fingers in business. The government belongs to all of us and should treat all of us equally.

Shelley weren't you working on a paper? How is it going? I hope you didn't think I'd forget about it.
Yes, another mindless "revelation" that cannot be sustained.
There is no exemption for Nancy Pelosi's district, Shelly. Go back to your paper.
This another fraudulent attempt to deny the unusual nature of corruption in the last Congress by pretending that "everyone does it".
Not a single Republican voice was raised during the last six years as the House allowed powerful lobbyists to write legislation (the power companies decided how much pollution could be tolerated, paint companies decided how many toxins were safe, meat processors allowed sick animals to be canned into food, Tom Delay ran for Congress initially because he was furius that the feds forbid him from using DDT in people's homes -he was an exterminator)
Of course, as the cronyism, giveaways, pork barrel projects, and sexual harrassment activities of the last Congress is exposed, Republican fronts (like Faux News and the Washington Times -run by the leader of the Moonie cult who believes himself to be the Korean incarnation of Jesus) will try to assure you that it has always been this way.
The last Congress was a cesspool the likes of which we had not seen in the last ninety years.
About half-way down the paper is an interesting and intricate table of minimum wages, all set by the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act.
One does need to question why Ms. Pelosi listened to the lobbyists from StarKist and Delmonte. These people are getting a REALLY good deal.
From the paper linked above:
Green Party Leader Convicted of Taking Bribes
Interestingly.... in the five years since the last Republican left the Minneapolis City Council, three members of that council have been convicted of bribery and extortion: two Democrats and one Green. Prior to the liberal sweep of the council, no one had been convicted or even accused of corruption for well over a generation.
What does that say?
Actually, my only point is that politicians from both sides of the aisle are equally 'corruptible'....It is certainly not restricted to one party or the other
sorry or my absence from this article for a bit. I'm battling a headache brought on by evil old ladies who wear too much perfume
Anyway, the topic at hand, Min wage causes prices to rise. The min wage worker then has to pay more for the products they create which means that they don't really earn more or much more. In the meantime those working just above min. wage see their pay cut. Min. wage benefits the gov't of course who has more income to tax. Other than that raising the min. wage is a mistake. People have lost their jobs over the recent min. wage increase in Ohio.
Unfortunately term limits will only be voted in by the people who have no interest in doing so. We are stuck, my friends, with corrupt politicians. Has been since the dawn of politics.
