I've made the initial leap. After some advice, and some thinking, I've decided that come Spring of 2010, I am going to try and do my own business taking portraits of individuals and small groups. I've tried once to work with a large group, and it wasn't so great. Then again, it was all my siblings, my parents, my kids, and my nieces and nephew. That could have made it harder on me.
Either way, I'm opting to start off small. In the mean time, I've gotten requests from both friends and family to do portrait sessions, so I started a group on Facebook. I invited all of the people who I thought would be most interested, or who would like to know about it.
For now, I'm offering free photo sessions on a limited basis (based on the weather, basically- I'll keep at it until it's too cold or dreary outside to continue) in my area, and in my hometown area (on an even more limited basis, due to travel, and being unable to fit in weekday evening shoots).
I am hoping to build up a portfolio of 3-4 more families, at least, before next Spring. Once I get the portfolio down, I'll work on getting a website up, and come Spring, hopefully I can start advertising for things like senior pictures, and family photos.
Without access to a studio, it limits when I can take photos, but hopefully, I can get some people who are happy with my work before next Spring. I talk with the mother of one of Raegan's friends regularly on Facebook, and she wants a session with her two girls, and some with her older daughter & Raegan together. An old friend from High School wants me to come up to Traverse City and shoot her and her son's portraits. I'm doing a shoot for my nephew's first birthday soon, and for my friend Karen's family the same weekend.
I'm excited! I'll take the winter to come up with pricing, and figure out what I am capable of doing, as well as maybe saving up for another camera.
