After dabbling around the outskirts of Gather for almost a year, I had enough points to cash in for quite a few gift cards which made excellent stocking stuffers.
But then I began to wonder, how did I get all those points. So I clicked on Gather's FAQ's and found this gem:
How do I earn more Gather Points?
We want to give Gather members incentives to do the very things that make Gather a better place. To earn more, publish content of high quality. Invite your friends, family and colleagues to Gather. Build great groups. Maintain a healthy, respectful, playful conversation with other Gatherers.
This doesn't sound like the Gather of late. I do try to keep my comments respectful and playful. But I guess overall I am still shaky on how I gathered all those points.
However, one idea I will share is that I wrote three anothology articles, marked them Rated G, and linked to many of my print-world published articles. These I believed to be quality pieces, and by making them easy to find, through search articles for "Rated G," many gather surfers responded with comments and ratings.
So thank you gather and gatherites! You helped me spruce up more than a few Christmas stockings, as well as a charity I favor.
Good Hunting. I mean reading! - Jim

I have just recently figured out how best to 'tag' my pieces to make the hunting easier. That and linking within another article.
I still have to learn the tagging thing... and how do you link within another article..
Notice if you roll back to the article above, I have linked the words 'article' and 'quality' each which will link you to a different anthology article that has links within to my stories.
I've done an in-depth 10-day experiment to figure out if I could figure out the point system. Go check out Gatheraholic's Cheat Sheet: What's The Point Experiment Conclusions!
But when I am not talking like a pirate, I do try to get points
