Joel, hahaha, why did you choose KFC food when you were in Bukittinggi??? I thought you would go to dives there and taste Padang foods! I know, it must be hard on your stomach but as war correspondent, I thought you would already have steel stomach....:-)

I love your photo of Sizzler in Bangkok though! Hilarious!

Hmm...I sense that some are surprised by the fast food shots. In my defense, I'll say that in traveling I do not normally eat American fast food. But I do love Long John Silvers, and after weeks of rough traveling it can be relaxing to eat something familiar, not to mention an interesting cultural experience in that even "American" chains take on something of their host nation in what they serve and how they serve it. So I'm a supporter of eating lots of local food but also making the occasional trip to a Western joint to see how it is "interpreted" by the host culture.

You do get around! We got so tired of oversalted food in Spain, that we twice went to a Barcelona Subway shop (and internet cafe).

Really neat to see these little glimpses of eating out from around the world. I love ethnic cuisines but have not had the pleasure of sampling them on their native soils so this was indeed a visual treat.

Great photo essay Joel! You are right about the fact that even the recognizable fast food chains have different selections and often the food doesn't taste anything like the U.S. version! For example, they have noodle dishes at Hardee's in Japan and they use an extremely hot mustard on their burgers. You know that when I lived in Japan, Denny's was the only restaurant where you could get a refill for free on your coffee! Everywhere else you pay by the cup and it is not cheap!
