Directly in front of the substance abuse treatment center where I work, there is a lovely little body of water called Indian Brook Pond. It is very nice to watch the pond as the seasons change. When I arrived for work recently, I saw three pairs of white swans gliding around the water. Swans are beautiful animals and mate for life. It was nice seeing not one, but three couples as they swam and bobbed their heads for fish or insects. They were quite far away from me but I thought I would climb down to the edge of the pond and see if I could get a couple of good photographs.
At first the swans were just white specks in the distance.
Then it seemed as if they saw me and thought they might swim over and investigate. I was delighted since it meant I could probably get better pictures. As I stood there and watched, all six swans started swimming in my direction.
I wished so much that I had brought some bread or bird seed for them. Next time I will do that for sure. As I continued to stand at the edge of the pond my new-found friends seemed as interested in me as I was in them.
As they got closer, I was clicking away with my digital camera. Suddenly a couple of big guys (they just had to be males!) came up on land and started walking toward me. I hadn't realized how large they were!
I backed off a bit since I didn't want them to bite me or anything. I think I would have jumped really high if they even quacked at me. One swan seemed very interested in making my acquaintance even though I kept backing up.

These beautiful, majestic creatures seemed to realize that I didn't have any food and they decided to go back to their swimming and fishing. They all turned around and got back in the water and swam away. I had to leave and enter the building to go to work. I realized that my day had started off nicely by seeing these beautiful birds. I'll be back to visit again but I'll definitely remember to bring a gift of bread and seed. After all, good manners dictate that if we are going visiting we should always bring a gift for the host and hostess.
