My friend and I went to see "My Best Friend's Girl" this weekend, which I expected to be so stupid.
Dane Cook (who got top billing - that surprised me) plays Tank Turner, a guy with a job similar to Will Smith's "Hitch," except he actually dates the women he is trying to manipulate. Basically, a guy hires him to be as big of a jerk as possible on a date with said guy's ex, thereby driving the recent ex back into the arms of the guy who hired Tank. The point is that Tank is such a jerk, he makes all these other jerks look fantastic.
Tank's perfect world gets flipped upside down, however, when his best friend and roommate, Dustin (Jason Biggs), gets "dumped" by his somewhat-girlfriend and coworker, Alexis (Kate Hudson).
Planning to give her his "biggest tank ever," he predictably ends up falling for her. Once Dustin finds out, everything hits the fan and this is where we meet Tank's dad, a college professor who is essentially an older version of Tank (Alec Baldwin).
Right off the bat, Hudson was 1 reason I was hesitant to see this movie. Yes, she's cute and likeable enough, but she's essentially a clone of her mother. One Goldie Hawn in this world is enough for me. Also, I get the sense that she is very self-entitled and thinks she's much more important than she really is. Plus, she always plays the same character - the all-around perfect yet quirky angel, with some high-powered, impressive job, who no guy can resist. And this movie is no exception.
In fact, all 3 main characters were pretty type-cast: Cook is the jerky, over-indulgent, full-of-himself, cocky a** everybody loves to hate. Biggs plays the shy, akward, nerdy yet loveable protaganist the audience cringes at, yet feels and pushes for to win.
While there were some cute and laughable parts to this movie, I would say it's definitely not worth the money to see it in a theater. I paid a matinee price and still feel a bit cheated.
