Romans 1 http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977445120&nav=MyGather
In the first chapter of Romans we see that God holds mankind responsible for knowing about Him and acknowledging Him. When they refuse to do so, when they reject Him, God releases them to the influence of their own wicked hearts and sin escalates.
The 2nd chapter of Romans explains the dynamic of God's judgment in more detail.
Now we see, that those who say they love and accept God are also in trouble. The Jew felt he was a child of God just because of his religion. Paul begins to lay down truths that will make them re examine that belief. Here is Paul's reasoning .
Wait a minute you Jews. You're judging the heathen because they don't obey God. Well it's true they are breaking God's law, but so are you. You think you're blessed by God and a recipient of his patience, but the truth is, though you are His chosen people, you are also law breakers.
Instead of being humbled because they received extra grace and yet still sin, they arrogantly accepted their own shortcomings but judged those that didn't know God's word.
Just because you ‛know' the truth, doesn't make you righteous. You must ‛do' the truth. If any man is ‛good' (without sin) he shall have honor and peace. So how many are good? Next lesson, Romans 3 will tell us.
Also consider, James 2:10, "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." What does this mean!!%^@&* :) That doesn't seem fair. It means if we only broke the law one time in our life . . . we are a law breaker. It makes no difference which of the laws we break ... we are all equally barred from eternity with God. Godlessness is godlessness. We have no room for judging each other.
Then Paul turns to the gentiles that didn't know God's word. All non Jews are gentiles. He says that they are also guilty. For every man has an inborn sense of ‛right and wrong'. And every one of them have come short of their own standard. In other words, (verse 8) " . . . we are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth."
Because God made us in His own image, we have an innate sense of goodness and evil. We have, everyone, chosen to cross that barrier many times.
As long as we are focused on ourselves, (the creature instead of the creator) we are selfishly ambitious. I see everything through what pleases me. I am ‛self' centered instead of God centered. In a later lesson we will discover why we make that choice. For now, let's honestly admit to ourselves that what Chapter 2 says is certainly true.
The Jewish law required circumcision. They took great pride in being circumcised. But Paul said, if you obeyed all the laws then being circumcised was a good. Circumcision is like wearing a wedding ring. It tells the world you are married. But if you are not married, wearing a wedding ring is useless. Well circumcision says you have cut yourself off from the world and are keeping covenant with God. But if that's not true, being circumcised is a farce. They thought circumcision made them acceptable to God and He is showing them that it does not. Only righteousness, with or without circumcision is acceptable with God.
Baptism is the same with Christians today. Baptism is a sign that you were in Christ when He died and have resurrected with Him to a new life. If you haven't done that, then your baptism is a lie. Again, like wearing a wedding ring without being married.
Rom 2:16 "on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus. NASU
That day is coming. What if God allowed us one area of our life that we could keep secret from Him. How terrible that would be. Every time I went to Him I would feel like a hypocrite. I would have to struggle to tell Him just how bad I was in that area. Oh no ... it is such a blessing that He knows us inside and out. Yet knowing all that, He says to you, "Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest ... I will carry your burden, your sin, though your sins be a scarlet, I will wash them whiter than snow." Why would anyone not come to such a God?
Yes! Come in and look around God. Know me completely. Make me what you want me to be.
What makes the difference between being a member of God's family and being on the outside looking in. God says that man, as he is now, is lost. He was born dead. All of us died in Adam. That's why we are self centered. The following chapters are life changing. All of us have trampled upon God's laws. The lay broken at our feet. Chapter 3 will complete the description of the lost state of men ... of you and me.
All that I've said may sound depressing ... kind of like over kill. But it is truth. It is like a doctor impressing upon you the danger of the cancer that is raging in your body. He wants you to know you have some decisions to make. Then comes the good news ... there are answers. There is a cure. Your friends may tell you that you look fine. That the doctor is using scare tactics. Who should you listen to? Only God knows the Truth. He said to hide the words of the Bible in your heart because " ... in them is life."
Call out to God now, in the privacy of your home. Ask Him to open your eyes and make it clear to you whether or not the Bible is the Word of God as Jesus claims it to be. Ask God to speak truth to you as you study His Word. He will answer that prayer.

Until chapter 3

Thank you for coming and sharing. We'll keep talking. Others too will pray.
I'm glad you're here ... and that you have a good friend. That really helps when you're starting out again :)
Anyone that understands Romans ... has a real grasp of the mechanics . I just want everyone to wade through the heavy stuff so they can see that there is a 'happy ever after' to those who choose Christ. I'm sure you know this ... but I needed to spell it out to someone so others passing through could hear. Besides, you always bring a croud of 5 into the room when you come. Is there a story behind that icon? Thanks for coming.
Book of Romans, again.
But do feel free to give any help you can ... even if you see things a little different than I do.
I'm glad you've joined us though. Hope you can share thoughts as you feel like it.
This is wonderful!
Blessings ~
Your FRIEND,
Rene
Would love for you to be involved but I know you are extremely tied up and have much ministry as well as teaching going on. For most of us this is fun ... for you it is a life style :) I was happy to see you little face when I just popped in.
I also think what you are doing is clearly presented and I applaud you for it.
Love and light to you, my friend.
First let me kindly thank you for stopping by and reading my story .I love to see your “face “ in the comments line.
I read your entire article and it’s very well written and articulates clearly the idea that God through Jesus is the only God that answers your prayers and shows you the truth.
Myself , it’s no secret now , I am overeducate and jaded by the modern philosophy (or intelligentsia if you want ) hence my view on religion is a very analytical one . I like talking about what everybody finds as being the Truth .( Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32) and I enjoy your articles tremendously .
My entire family suffered so much at the hand of what Christianity valued as truth and used it to persecute , instill fear and doubt in their haunted souls .( I wrote a quick story too, if you have the time to read it I’d be honored , http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?memberId=507651&articleId=281474977443319&nav=MyGather )
My grandparents were God abiding , good practicing Jews , and because the Judaic tradition does not house specific prayer (as the Christian one does , where one prays specifically towards a person or a deed ) they read from the Torah (five books of Moses) and the Nevi’im ("Prophets") when in the temple , convinced in their hearts that they are following God’s path towards truth. However , because of the way history took a turn in the 40ies they have decided , in order to save their lives and their children’s , to renounce their Judaism and accept whatever Christian dogma promised as truth . Needless to say , they barely made it alive and narrowly escaped the Nazi camps and Stalin’s gulag to finally make it to Israel where they opened their Torah again and asked forgiveness for their short detour in worship to what they knew as a benevolent and forgiving God .
They are both dead now , but my eyes well up every time I read references given to what the Truth means . It’s all relative , and some people gave all they had because Truth meant something completely different to them .
I hope I did not rain on your parade , (please forgive me if I did ) . I thought your article is well written and lined up with good references from the New Testament .
First ... please everyone read Atlantis' article. also, it would be good to read her comment to this article.
Nothing is worth more than this day
Jews and Christians ... I only know how I, myself, and the Chistians in my personal world feel about the Jews. I won't speak for anyone else. But I will make the Jews an important part of this study on Romans from this point on. Actually, Romans 9,10 and 11 speak directly to the gentiles regarding the Jews.
Let me say something else. I have tried to change from the word 'Christian' to 'believer' when referring to myself. One of the reasons is the word 'Christian' means different things to different people. I'm not against the word, it is as good as any and certainly says a lot about a persons belief. However, my invitation to all is not to join a religion but to know God, and what He did when He came to earth. To put your faith, or belief in Him. But . . .
I met a Messianic Jew. Then I understood something. The Jews that recognized Him as their Messiah went right on being Jews, as well they should have. Christ said He came, to the Jew first, then to the gentiles. 'Messianic' indicated they believed that Jesus was the promised Messiah but did not change their identity from Jewish. I felt, after meeting him, that, since we did believe in the same God, & calling himself Christian would look as though he were changing religions, I would rather refer to myself as a believer only.
It drops a little of the baggage the name Christianity has picked up over the years plus, actually is a more accurate description. (Although tons of good & the knowledge of Christ Himself was also accomplished in the name of Christianity) We never did think God did away with Judaism, but fulfilled His promise to them in a wonderful way, and, joy of all joys, included the gentiles in a new way during this age of Christ.
Please all feel free to share your own thoughts as we go along.
All morning I've been sad. I've asked God to, between us all, let much truth be revealed through this study.
I hate the fact that many Jews were forced to take on the 'Christian' title. I spoke as honestly as I could express above so as not to try to slide over the differences you and I might have. But that you might know exactly what I'm thinking. We can handle both speaking the truth about ourselves.
I love the Old testament, the Jewish books and spend most of my time there. I feel like I learn so much about God, His character and love. Also His plans and love for the Jews.
They have never ceased to be His chosen people and that is one reason why conservative Christians are so protective of Israel.
You haven't rained on my parade. I think you spoke out because God wanted you to. Maybe because my heart needed to be softened. Believe me, it has been today.
Thank you for commenting and for sending me to your article. Shalom, judy :)
"My entire family suffered so much at the hand of what Christianity...haunted souls." There's a long story in that one sentence; and although I am curious about specifics, I am weighed down that they and you suffered to ANY extent in connection with Christianity. Christianity's roots are embedded in the promise given to Abraham that through his seed the whole world would be blessed, and Glome will be covering this connection in the 4th chapter of Romans.
Another thing. Though I very much appreciate the courtesy with which you speak of Glome's post, NEVER apologise for the mind that God gave you that loves? to analyze. Give God both barrels. He's big. He can take it and so can Glome. If Christianity is true, it will stand the test of your examination.
Yes, you're correct; this article is very well written. Thank you, Glome, for nutshelling it.

"Many daughters have attained valor, but you have surpassed them all."
False is grace, and vain is beauty; a God-fearing woman, she should be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hands, and she will be praised at the gates by her very own deeds.
Proverbs 31:10-31
Perhaps there are some He wants to reach ... and maybe it is me. I've enjoyed my time in Romans.
But water baptism is like the wedding ring and circumcision; just a symbol to the world that you are now in Christ and it is also an act of obedience. God wants you to wear that ring :) So you can see that you have no reason to be baptized until after you've been born again. It doesn't hurt babies but it doesn't help either. I was baptised as a baby but after I accepted Christ I couldn't wait to be baptised again because now I really was a new person and wanted to show the world :)
Thanks for feeling free to ask questions. I can gather verses for you if you like. But maybe, since Romans 6 deals with that, I'll be sure and use verses on that study.
Here's the Baptisms explanation on Pre Romans

I am enjoying your SERIES. I am going to read through this, and all of these wonderful comments, and come back with some input {grin} . . .

I've accidentally allowed circumcision and baptism to cross paths a little. Let me give just a word of explanation.
God's promises to the Jews were for things that God would do for them on earth primarily.
He doesn't mention much at all about the after life in the OT as He does in the NT.
Twice in the NT God said things happened in the OT as examples to us in this age. By watching God deal with the Jews in an earthly kingdom, we can get the feel of who God is; what He wants from us today. Today we walk in an invisible kingdom.
Circumcision was given to the babies as they were born into the Jewish family. It was a sign that they were part of God's Jerusalem. It is an earthly example of what happens to us when we are born into God's heavenly family. When someone accepts Christ and is born again, (although they are of every age) they are to be baptized to show they are now part of the Kingdom of God.
Nevertheless, God said not all are Jews that are called Jews. He also warned about Satan appearing as an angel of light in this age of Christ. I believe the majority of people that lightly say they are Christians are not. God said "Narrow is the way to righteousness and few there be that take it. Wide is the way to destruction and many go thereby."
So if I believe the Bible ... I know that although all Jews were to be circumcised, it was an empty statement for many as they grew older.
And for all the baptisms among those claiming to be believers, it says nothing about how many people have actually chosen to put their faith in Christ.
So circumcision is done at birth or later when one becomes part of Judaism. It is a sign that they are part of the earthly family of Jews, God's chosen people. But does not give righteousness.
Baptism is a sign that one has accepted the Lord and been born again but does not in itself give righteousness.
Where is the body/soul Article you just mentioned above? I want to SEE it.
As for this Article, I'm still reading through these comments . . . BE BACK!
Romans 2:28 (KJV)
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
Romans 2:29 (KJV)
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
AMPLIFIED BIBLE: ROMANS 3:28-29
Romans 2:28 ~ AMPLIFIED BIBLE
For he is not a [real] Jew who is only one outwardly and publicly, nor is [true] circumcision something external and physical.
Romans 2:29 ~ AMPLIFIED BIBLE
But he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and [true] circumcision is of the heart, a spiritual and not a literal [matter]. His praise is not from men but from God.
More to come Glome . . .
Now that I'm awake and reading your question on here instead of the email, I see you mentioned body/soul not soul/spirit. My mistake. I intended to write, in the above reply to you "I just returned from responding to your article on the difference between soul/spirit. Sorry for the confusion ... but then again, when you're talking to me... :)
That is the kind of feed back that is needed in this type of nut shell presentation. I'm sure I've made error's in what I leave out & unnecessary things I've added. Trying to keep it short can be misleading to people.
Actually ... Now that I am getting well and thinking better again, I feel like rewriting the series. In the 3 ring notebook used for giving these to people, I tried to keep each lesson on only one page. You see how difficult this would be.
I had to reread all the comments to see where I mentioned body/soul and see that I promised answers in chapters to come. I did that on other portions of the lessons also. Maybe I should complete the lessons for any that might be reading without comment. I shouldn't promise answers in later chapters and then fail to follow through.
I'm glad you made me have to read through these comments :)
I published 3 definitions and Up throught a pre 4th chapter. (I think that was the last one.) It didn't draw much interest so I postponed the series & began writing... or rewriting lessons I prepared for home Bible studies through out the year.
I'm kind of unsure now ... perhaps I should continue in case there are some readers who need that info but just don't care to comment. I'm thinking ...
Please feel free to indicate that you look at things a little differently if you want. The older I get the more I realize peripheral beliefs shouldn't separate the Christians that are His children. Nevertheless, God wants us to continue to grow in wisdom and truth. When a certain interpretation seems important to us, we need to express the basis for our belief. It helps new or non Christians make choices and realize they need to make Bible study a life long habit :)
Alrighty then. I cannot get serious with you, because you are coming out of that nutshell . . .
Were you not feeling well, and I did not know it? Seriously -- are you okay? How is your mom? I should not babble on until I know that you are okay.
HUGS ~
