What did you learn from the Virginia Tech massacre?

I am still saddened and disheartened by what happened to those 32 innocent people, and I offer my sincerest condolences to the victims' family and friends.

In light of the horrendous killing spree that occurred on April 16, I want to know what you all have learned about safety, mental illness, post-traumatic stress, etc. Start your sentence with "Because of what happened at Virginia Tech, I learned that..." I'll go first:

Because of what happened at Virginia Tech, I learned that life is short and should not be taken for granted. We should enjoy a sunset, smell a flower, or hug a friend because we never know when that will be our last chance to embrace life.

Because of VT I have learned we should put things in perspective. Just a week or so before this we had a basketball team acting like it was the end of the world when they were on the wrong end of a joke, it seemed overly important at the time but now it seems way overblown.

Not sure the news has learned anything from this, or that we would watch and learn about things that really effect us instead of silly little ones.

I hope something good will become of this, some law that saves someone, some person that gets the treatment they need.... something... I am sure it touched a lot of lives and someone will use it as motivation to make changes in the world.

Thank you, Mark. I do hope that changes are made to prevent something like this from happening again.

As for the Imus controversy, I know it pales in comparison to the VT Tech incident, but I wouldn't call it silly. I guess my point of view is different since I'm a black woman, but I would personally like to see problems in the media and the music industry resolved as well.

America has a lot of work to do.

I have learned that life is short. That I should always tell those that I love, "I love you,". I have also learned that if I see that someone seems to be in emotional danger I will try to help. If I fear that person is a danger to him or herself, I will call someone for help.

Thanks, Linda. It's time to get past the "see no evil, hear no evil" mentality that so many people have these days. Things don't go away when you ignore them - especially situations like this.

Because of the Virginia Tech shooting...I learned that life is definitely too short... too unpredictable... we take everything for granted... we don't know what we have until it's gone... we just think we have problems... we are so caught up in our own little world, we can't reach out to others who are desperately, in whatever way they know how, crying out for help... a person's life is more important than anything going on in this world. We all need to join together and help each other...before it's too late.
