Pings are simply comments posted to your profile page instead of to your content. You can format pings in the same manner as a comment (include images, bullets, etc.). Typically they are used as a means to say hello, or for other quick, short communication between members. Pings generate no points directly, but can indirectly contribute to your earnings.
You can set your email settings to receive emails whenever someone pings you. Otherwise you just need to look at your profile page--scroll down and there they are.
