The best way to prepare for an emergency is through education and through preparation. Although there are many skills that can be used to benefit us in many different disasters, there are also many skills that are not needed in all disasters. Every Disaster is different. Each one requires different skills. The tools that we need to educate us and others for disasters begin with knowing what disasters are most likely to happen in our own regions.
One of the scariest things about natural disasters is that they often occur suddenly, without any warning. Even though you can not always predict when or where a major natural disaster will hit, you can make sure that you are well prepared when it does hit.
The most powerful forces of nature are earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, wind storms, lightning storms, flash flooding , river flooding and we must never forget El Nino. There are also other forms of natural disasters. These natural disasters seem to be getting worse in recent years. We have been receiving a lot of high winds in our area lately.
Don’t wait until it is too late. Begin preparations now to protect yourself and your loved ones by being informed about which disasters could affect your region. Educate yourself about how to respond in the event of a natural disaster and prepare for them by having and carrying the right emergency supplies.
It is equally important to have first aid skills . The American Red Cross offers standard First Aid Classes. You can also learn many of the skills that you need by doing a search online and read them till you understand the skills . The class does not do you any good if you don’t learn the skills. Your local library will have books that will help you also.
There are many articles posted on the group BE PREPARED that will help you make your own 72 hour kits and first aid kits. People who are prepared have the best chance of survival when a natural disaster strikes. Prepare now before the disaster strikes. Remember when disaster strikes, the time to prepare is over.

BTW, one thing that people don't do is secure important documents properly and this causes even more problems when there is a disaster.
You crack me up! I bet you are the life of the party everywhere you go!
Thanks Travis for bringing this up.

We all have to stick together and help each other in this quest. I dont think the government is going to be of much help.
Cecile,
We have already replenished ours. We do it the first week of Jan and July.
We always store as much medication as we can in our kits. We rotate it each month so it stays good. I use prescription nexium, so I would be ok without the tums but I will add that to the list that I have for others. Thanks for the wonderful advice.
Thanks for your comment. It really is an important subject.

We learn from our experiences and the stories of others.
That is terrible. I had no idea that the average household only has a five day food supply. They better hope a disaster never hits their area. You should read my article "Lessons I learned from a ice storm"

My 1st aid supplies are down.
I am LDS too and I think you would be surprised how many LDS are not prepared as the Prophet has warned us to do
It is an never ending task to keep our supplies rotated and stocked. Isnt it?
I would have never thought to scan documents and save them on disc -- that is a terrific idea :) I am going to have to get busy this weekend I guess.
With this wacky weather, the threat of terrorist attacks, and just general nuttiness in the world, I am going to have to get more on the ball with getting things together ... I have started getting extra food and water on each shopping trip to store, and we managed to get an extra prescription for each of my husband's needed medications so we can have some on hand too, but I plan of course on doing more .... to begin with, scanning my important paperwork and putting them on disc :)
I usually keep a winter kit in the car but I realize more is needed so am trying to catch up (gosh, I am even behind on the winter car kit, since this weather has been so mild, but it can change in an instant as I am learning)
