I think it pretty much goes without saying that, for the most part, the folks who come through the pawn shop are an unusual bunch. And of course, by 'unusual', I really mean 'not real bright'. At least once a week I think to myself, "I can die now..I've seen the dumbest person EVER!"....and then, without fail, the universe shows me that it's always coming up with dumber people. Take today for example. A young black woman comes into the pawn shop to pawn her bracelet. The conversation goes like this: She: I want to know if I can pawn my bracelet. Me: Okay, we go strictly by weight of the gold. She: So you need me to take it off? Me: Yep, I can't pay you for what your hand weighs. She: Okay. >takes bracelet off and hands it to me< Me: >placing bracelet on digital scale to weigh it< She: Oh! My boyfriends got one of those scales! He uses it when he's weighing his...uh...nothin'. Me: Yeah, they come in handy. So your bracelet weighs 11.7 grams and it's 10k. Based on the weight, you're looking at about 35 bucks. She: Only 35 dollars? Me: Yeah, if we scrap the gold, that's all we'll get for it, so that's all we pay for it. She: Yeah, that's fine...I just need money for gas and goin' out tonight. Me: Okay. Do you have your ID? At this point, I get to entering her information. She's pleasant enough, talking and such. She keeps going over to the front window and looking out..I assume she's keeping an eye on her car, which is amusing since her car is parked directly across the street from the store, and the whole storefront of the pawn shop is windows...but whatever makes her happy, right? Once I'm done entering her info and getting the money for her, she comes back to the counter and signs the pawn slip. I hand her the funds, and she leaves. Up to this point, I think she's a normal person. A few seconds later, she comes rushing into the store, totally freaking out... "Do you have a phone book? My truck (she's got a newer Yukon) is locked and my baby is in it and my remote won't work to open the door!" So I give her the phonebook...she calls some people looking for someone with a slim-jim to pop the locks on her truck. No luck. Rocky offers to go out and help her...the whole time he's out there, in the pouring rain, trying to get her truck open, and she's running back and forth from the driver's side to the passenger side to check on her 'baby'. Poor Roc must have been outside for 45 minutes before I look out and see the Locksmith working on her doors. A few minutes later, and she's inside the truck... A few minutes after that, Rocky comes back to the store. I ask is the 'baby' is okay. Rocky laughs. Then proceeds to tell me that her 'baby' was 11 years old. And wide awake in the passenger seat. I asked why the lady didn't just have the kid open the freakin' door...apparently the kid is mad at her so he was ignoring her. If that were my kid, and I had to waste money on a locksmith because he was ignoring me, there'd be a serious ass kicking when I got back into the truck... BUT WAIT!!! It gets sooooooooo much better!!! While she's inside the store, settling up with the locksmith, I notice the kid moving around in the truck, so I mention this to the woman..who goes out to check... ...and finds the doors locked again. I guess the kid didn't want her to be able to get in, so he crawled around inside and relocked all the doors. Mom's locked out again. So instead of threatening the kid with physical violence (which is totally what I'd have done at this point), she gets the locksmith to open the locks...AGAIN...which, of course, he charges her for...and rightly so. Then the woman comes back in the store...and the kid starts moving around in the truck again..so I tell her...the woman tells me that it's not a problem this time..because she has the remote opener for the door (you remember that remote, right? the one that didn't work in the first place?)...I told her that I thought it was broken...she told me that she'd picked up the OTHER one she keeps in the truck, so no worries.... She pays the locksmith and he leaves...the woman thanks me and Rocky for being so nice and helpful and goes to leave..when she gets to her truck, she finds out that the doors are in fact, locked again...but she's not worried, she's got the remote starter...yeah, you heard me right..what she thought was the remote door opener, turns out to be the remote starter for her truck. Now, not only is the woman locked out of her truck, it's running...with the brat inside... ...Luckily for her, the truck ran out of gas before either the kid could move it, or the locksmith got back for the third time to open her doors. So much for her going out tonight. I couldn't watch anymore...it was physically painful to watch the situation...I felt bad for her, but at the same time couldn't help but wonder if she's a little retarded to keep leaving the damn kid in the truck knowing that he keeps locking her out... Anyway, for all I know, she'll still be sitting out there when I get to work in the morning...lol Yep..she's the winner of 'dumbest person I've seen' contest...but I've got no doubt she'll be dethroned as winner in no time....probably by her kid....lol
