Not enough discipline for children when they are young and caveing in to BUY them everything they want.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH GARY~ the state has apparently taken over our job as parents~ and is obviously doing a TOTAL SH** job of it~

Yeah, if that dad had just smacked his kids around a little more often, clearly the boy wouldn't have shot him.

He cannot face adult sanctions because New Mexico law says a child must be 14 or older to be tried as an adult for murder.

My wife and I watch some US TV shows on rental DVDs. She is amazed at the viciousness of the violence. Cheap hack writing. How can any kid grow up with his or her head on straight these days? Parents of young kids today certainly have a harder job than we did a generation ago -- which was already hard enough back then.

That is insane. There is to much violence on tv, video games, and at the movies.

Now that is very messed up. Parents I think are not cracking down on there kids enough now a days.

Whatever the reason, children are completely out of control. I do, however, agree that it is lack of proper parental supervision. This is tragic and that boys life is absolutely destroyed. Father obviously did not have that gun stored properly. It should have beek out of reach and locked up. Makes me so sad.

The comments above are so superficial. Few people seem to realize just what is going on in the world. When God is removed from the affairs of man on the planet chaos ensues. Traditional religion is as dead as a doornail and is impotent to effect any change in society. God is alive and well; man has turned its back on Him. When man lets go of the cadaver of dead religions and returns to God, then, and only then, will sanity return to social and spiritual relationships. In the meantime people, including little children, will continue to kill each other.

I have been sitting here reading your comment, Thomas, and am having difficulty with the rational. You have a right to your opinion. Without looking up chapter and verse one thing to remember is:

This is not the action of a child.
My eldest got in trouble for something (do not remember what it was at this moment), went to the school told them I did something to him which took me two years in court to clear myself. I was looking at 4 years in prison!
Years later when I asked my kid why did he do this? He said he wanted me in jail with him, he did not want to be there by himself. He was also in trouble with the law at that time.
As soon as my kid did this to me, I realized he was no longer a child.

People do not understand children feel they are in control, not us parents. The schools, our society in general has put these ideas into these kids heads. There inflated ... ego's I guess one would call them, need to be deflated. If they want to act like grown ups, in there parents homes, it is time for the "child" to move on before something like this shooting happens.
We have to quit coddling our kids. They have to grow up!! Sometimes we have to make them.

Unbelievable!! I really don't know what this world is coming too!!! You see these kinds of things daily now. Parents killing their children, children killing their parents,husbands killing their wives, wives killing their husbands, and it just goes on and on and on!!!!! I'm really sick of it!

Irresponsible gun ownership! How was that kid able to get his hands on a gun....a loaded gun at that. If this trend continues, responsible gun owners will lose. Pretty soon you, in the U.S. will become like us in Canada where only cops and bad guys have guns......and as we all know, there's never a cop around when you need one.

This morning's Japan Times reported that Canadian gun control laws were loosened yesterday -- that registration of long-barrelled weapons would no longer be required. Handgun registration still remains, though. Is that true?

Hi Jim, I know they were talking about abolishing the registry as recently as yesterday but as far as I know, that 2 Billion Dollar money grab is still in effect. Even when it is abolished, people will still have to be licenced to purchase (what we used to call a "Firearms Acquisition Certificate or an FAC) a long gun. They just won't be required to register their individual rifles. Screwy I know but then again, it's bureaucracy in action. LOL

Where did you hear that it was because he was grounded? I didnt see it in the article but when i first heard the story I wondered what the kids reasoning was. It sounds like this kid needed anger management counseling badly well before this ever happened. Of course the article also mentions child neglect or abuse so I have to wonder what was happening between the kids two homes.

Yeah, this seems beyond extreme for being grounded. I can't help but wonder if something else is going on.

Why didn't Dad have trigger locks on the gun.
Whith two children in house.
I was raised to respect them. Yes we had them in house but knew if we touched them it was a whippen.
They were used to hunt with for food for the family.
I was tought very young to hunt.

And people still think we do not need gun control laws?

Once again, not enough discipline in this kid. If he had any he wouldn't have done this. He had no fear whatsoever, no borders at all and felt compelled to kill because he didn't get his way. Then there's the problem of the father leaving easy access to his firearms.

If abuse or neglect was a factor then the kid is weak minded. My brothers, sisters and I had a father that went fucking crazy with a hose half of the week while molesting my sisters on the side lines. We never shot our parents. We all had anger problems but still knew the difference between right and wrong and feared what the justice system could do to us if not our parents.

OMG! What on earth is going on in this country? It seems that we hear of crimes like this practically every day.

This story is too awful for words. There are so many things wrong here. My first question is how the child was able to access a loaded gun; that should never have happened. The child has ruined his life and taken the life of his father; the discipline he will now get will be a lot worse than being grounded.

I find it quite comical that dad got shot with his own gun.

It would be comical if it was only his life, but he pretty much destroyed his son's life too by not keeping that gun the way it should have been kept.

I hope that the little psychopath he sired will not be allowed to spawn.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that this event was not tragic, but if it sells a few 'trigger locks' it will have a happy ending.
