I almost died today
When I woke up alone
for the first time in our empty bed
And realized that it was truly over.
I lay on my back
with tears dripping into my ears
while in utter despair
I willed my broken heart to stop beating.
I almost died again
When I glanced at the open closet,
Remembering
how you so thoroughly
removed all traces of your presence
Ensuring you had no reason to return.
Like a child I held my breath
Hoping to turn blue and fade away.
But my heart never stopped
And I finally had to breathe.
So I rolled to the middle of the bed,
Stretched out like never before,
Looked again at my half empty closet,
And decided to live.
I could buy more shoes.

Brilliant!
Thanks for posting to my group, Anythingwriting
This was a fabulous poem.
Blessings and best wishes - S.
As your feelings unfold, the sadness permeates the imagery until the last line. The last line could be called comic relief. Personally, I think the last line gives this poem a fullness and acts as a metaphor for a lonely feeling.
It could be sad but relieving

I love your punch line. nothing like the comfort of something new.
This is great, and it really is amazing what new shoes can do.
