The other night, I caught an old, old western, in the wee hours of the morning, and somewhere in the first ten minutes, I realized I had seen it first when I was a young kid. I was impressed, seeing it with new eyes, and an appreciation for what it was trying to impart to the youth of my generation. It was simplistic, and obvious, but it was for kids, and perhaps, I was thinking, we could use some of that today. Anyway, here's "The Code of the West".
Back in the fifties,
We loved cowboy shows,
With Roy and Dale Rodgers,
Hopalong, Gabby, and all those,
We soaked up the code of the West.
We learned true lessons in life,
Some the best.
But in a blink of the eye,
We had families, and few,
Held on to those values, did you?
We had corporate ladders to scale,
That took the wind from the sails,
Of the values we learned young, so well.
Time passed quickly,
We aged, and we fell,
Some to money,
Some so slow you couldn't tell,
For all the time that has passed,
You'd think no morals could last,
But the code of the West's served me well.

As for me, I became more of what I have always been,
A nurturer, a mother, a lover, and a person who would do no person intentional harm.
(oh... and... uhm... Dale's name was "Evans"... ;o) ROFL!)
