SUSAN B: SOO LOCKS, SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN
Hello 'PHOTO & VIDEO PARADE' members and anyone else who might happen upon this article.
I'm proud to present my PHOTO PARADE- Susan B: Soo Locks, Michigan! These are photos from a trip I made with The Househusband and Sensational Son in 1998. We went to Michigan ostensibly to visit family that we seldom get to see, but we were barely through the door when they were pushing us back out to explore northern Michigan, Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula.
We have a set of locks in Seattle and the largest ships to pass through are the NOAA Ice Breakers. They look like rafts up against the ship we saw at the Soo Locks. The Soo Locks allow ships to pass between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes (bypassing St. Mary's River which has a drop of seven meters) and is situated between Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in Canada. Our visit to the Michigan side of the Soo Locks was rewarded since we'd arrived just a half hour before one of the few ships that day. It took three photographs to capture its entire length! We ended up watching as the sun went down even though we'd arrived in the afternoon.
