I just got great news that business will be taking my husband to Savannah for a few days in September. Of course, I'm going , too! I've never been, so I would really like to hear about Savannah and nearby locations from Gather members who live there or who have vacationed there in the past.
I would like to know a lot, so share anything. But here are some specific questions.
1. Where's the best seafood? A co-worker suggested we go to Uncle Bubba's instead of the more famous Lady and Sons, owned by Paula Dean. Hubby and I love seafood and we're in a fairly landlocked place, so we want to take advantage of it while we're near the shore.
2. I'm a big fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Will I be able to spot a lot of locations from the book?
3. Any ghost tour recommendations? I know Savannah has a reputation for being one of the country's most haunted cities, so I'd like to get some goosebumps.
4. What beach is nearby? We'd like to take an extra day and spend it at the beach, but I'm not sure if Savannah has a good public beach. Does anyone know?
5. Where should we stay? We'll be driving, so I hope parking downtown won't be a problem.
We plan to spend five or six days.
thanks for any help!

Re: seafood - go to the small independently owned places, as close to the shore as you can get. The fresher, the better in terms of seafood and the little places are always the best.
I remember the public transportation being very nice - see if you can locate the Savannah Chamber of Commerce's website and find out about the bus system.
My mother read Midnight just before the last time she went and had a blast finding the stuff mentioned in the book. She didn't have any trouble, but if you do, I remember her saying that they had city tours based around the book.

I am sure you will have a great time and tell us all about it when you return...to make me even more envious!
Where have you been hiding yourself? I have not seen much of you lately.
I know it is not good to brag but I am just so honored and excited that I wanted to share it with you my dear friend.
Article.
I hope you feel better really soon. :)
I am sorry that you have been under the weather. I did and do miss you.
I am just stopping by to show my support before I go to bed.
I am worried about you. I have not seen much of you lately. Are you ok??
2. I think they probably do tours based on the book. I do know that you can go to Bonaventure cemetery and see those locations pretty easily. I have a poem on here about Bonaventure if you want to check out my articles...
3. Take the evening one, by candle light. I have heard really good things about it
4. Best beaches are on Tybee Island, just a short drive from Savannah
5. There are several nice hotels along the riverfront and a lot of bed and breakfasts in the historic district, but they will probably be a little more expensive. If you go southside, you will be near the malls and in more of a typical city. My recommendation is to stay downtown if ppossible, book early because the art school has events all the time and downtown/historic district/riverfront locations fill fast. As far as parking, there are a couple parking garages, usually connected to the hotels. Savannah is known for being a walking city with the squares in the downtown historic district. If you don't mind walking and you have a good pair of comfortable walking shoes, I recommend walking as much as possible. Some places only offer on street parking and that can fill fast if there is an event going on in town. September might be ok because students should already be back in classes and fewer parents in town. Also, it is toward the end of tourist season, so hopefully you will be ok.
Any other questions, let me know and I will answer best I can. I lived there from 1990-94 and have been back a couple times since. Really wanting to go back...
