So, I went to see the Rocketts this weekend. A once in a lifetime treasure, right? Well, not so much. While the dancing was, as is to be expected, sublime, the lack of any acknowledgement of cultural, um, differentiation, was a bit astounding. While I understand that the show is the "Christmas Spectacular, (my own struggle with paying attention to obvious clues)" I couldn't help but find my social worker mind longing for a more balanced holiday extravaganza.
And then I thought, if that allure appeals to me, then it may be of interest to you potential Chicago visitors as well.
Chicago is a world-renown city, that is correct. And much of the city's charisma is noted in the media as related to Lake Michigan, skyscrapers like Sear's Tower, and fine wining, dining, shopping and theater going opportunities. While those are certainly here (and enjoyable) for the taking, one of my favorite parts of this city is the eclectism in cultures represented here. And so, for you folks and families who have interest in a little more ethno-diversity in your explorations, I've included a list of possibilities for you to consider on your next Chicago getaway.
First step: Take the Train
If you are someone who has an appreciation for authenticity, the train is a great way to meet some people other than the "cookie cutter" types you see on your regular weekly flight from Pittsburgh to the office in downtown Chicago. The train may include more diverse groups of people, both age and culturally speaking, and allow you the TIME (yes, that terrifying four-letter-word) to relax and relish your vacation time. For more information, go to the Chicago Amtrak website.
Step Two: Pick the Cultural Excursion on which You Want to Embark
Here in the so-called "second-city," the diverse range of options for cultural-immersion, education and, of course, fun are certainly at the top of the heap! You can go anywhere from China Town to Little Italy (or the Heart of Italy, yes there are TWO) to Latino neighborhoods like Pilsen that boast their own museums and culturally comforting foods.
I've picked a few of my favorite neighborhoods in the city for you to explore, but don't hesitate to add your own itinerant-focused research to enhance your vacation.
Pilsen
Pilsen is not only home to a recent explosion of renters and home-buyers, as well as trendy clothing stores and restaurants, but is culturally rooted in the flourishing Mexican population here in Chicago. A testament to this underpinning of our city, is the National Museum of Mexican Art, located at 1852. W. 19th St. I've enjoyed everything from their world-famous El Dia de los Muertos exhibit every November ("Day of the Dead"), to their original Freda Calo exhibit. Educationally sound and great gift shop to bring treats back to your friends who didn't get lucky enough to join you! Try a delicious lunch to top off your
experience at Carnitas Uruapan, just over on 18th St.
Little Italy Vs. Heart of Italy
Unlike some major cities, Chicago has two well-known Italian neighborhoods, both with a different set of charm and different hands that make their pasta.
Little Italy, which is amidst the lively UIC Campus boasts everything from the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame to palette pleasing feasts at restaurants such as Francesca's and Tuscany. For a cheaper, but delightful alternative, check out Pompeii.
If you are one who appreciates a well adorned cathedral and a little historical information about architecture, stop off at Our Lady of Pompeii Church as well.
If you are seeking a home-cooked meal in a restaurant that seats few, and a less touristy treat, then Heart of Italy will keep you begging for another loaf of bread. This area, at 24th and Oakley, is all food....and family owned! The link will lead you to the faves of the fans, but my personal favorite...year after year after year...is La Fontanella. Lamb, pasta, chicken vesuvio and homemade ravioli to your hearts delight. Don't bring the extended family (unless you rent the whole place out), as there are only about 12 tables in the entire place. Friendliest wait staff around!
China Town
China Town Chicago is among the most thriving and culturally complete neighborhoods around. You can enjoy everything from fine Chinese or Cantonese cuisine to a quick egg roll to a scrumptious cup of bubble tea, and all in one afternoon. Even better? This spot is right off the "Roosevelt" stop on the CTA Red Line train. Go to the website above for a "quick click" coupon for visitors. Not far from downtown Chicago.
AND....
If you are a learner or a museum hopper, then check out a few of these other hot spots to enhance your vacation.
The Polish Museum of America
The Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, located right in the heart of downtown, not far from Columbia College, The Art Institute and Millenium Park.
Dusable Museum of African-American History located in the University of Chicago proud Hyde Park neighborhood. This neighborhood is a great spot to see some of the most amazing architecture you've seen, especially if you are interested in looking at massive homes. Also, check out Medici's bakery or restaurant for anything from a latte and a muffin to a pepperoni packed pizza pie.
And, of course, you readers out there. Add other suggestions for travelers to your comments. Happiest of culturally competent travels to you!
