On the heels of a successful fiction reading at the Patterson Theater in downtown Baltimore, I received more good news. My short story, "Freedom," is being published in Coloquio.
Coloquiois an electronic newsletter that boasts more than 800,000 unique visitors a year. The newsletter registers more than 7 million hits annually.
The first installment of "Freedom" was published in 2006, but I'd like to share it here on Gather now. A new installment continues to be published each month -- but it's best to start reading at the beginning.
"Freedom" is being serialized in 12 parts. One section will appear each month. The story follows an American soldier taking the train from his girlfriend in Baltimore to his parents Chicago. As he rides the rails, he reflects on his past service in Afghanistan and his next tour of duty in Iraq, conflicted about his service.
"Freedom" is the first story to be published from Tracks, a novel in stories.
Read Part 1 of "Freedom" now!

Like TRACKS, the novel this story is excerpted from I think it builds momentum and reaches an intense climax. Like love and war, I suppose.
Liz, there's a lot more of Bi'hn to come. Some of the better scenes in the story involve her.
Deb, remember that this is just part one of 12, so the part you read was not meant to be a self-contained story -- just the intro. I'll post part two later this week. Yes, it was cut into smaller parts to fit the newsletter.
Thanks again for all of the comments!
