Today as I was traveling from Boston to New York City via Amtrak I realized how important a role that Amtrak plays in our transportation system. For many years I have regularly traveled between these two cities. Some times I would drive, but usually I would take the shuttle or take the train. Clearly with the launch of the Acela Service, I take the train now much more frequently. But what I realized today is that when I want to be almost certain of arriving at my destination on time, I generally take Amtrak.
I took today’s trip ahead of an incoming winter storm. It was my goal to get to NYC before the snow became heavy. As I was making my reservation, I immediately knew that I’d be traveling on Amtrak. Amtrak’s reliability and dependability, even in the face of a winter storm, was my motivator.
I arrived at South Station in Boston 10 minutes before boarding without the hassle of long lines. I boarded the train, plugged in my laptop along with my cellular card and was able to work online the entire trip. At 2PM, an announcement came over the loud speaker from the Café Car Manager,” It’s Two O’clock ladies and gentlemen, time for your Bloody Mary break. While there were not many takers, we all enjoyed the amusement.
The train arrived in Penn Station eight minutes early, before the snow, and I was off and on my way.

Care to join me in the cafe car? Lol.
I enjoy riding Amtrak, and have applied many of my travel credit card points to my Amtrak Rewards program. The trip from Portland to Seattle is worth taking even just for a trip to a Seattle ball game or shopping excursion.
On a side note, remember to fill out your Amtrak post-trip survey at www.amtraksurvey.com. Passengers completing the Amtrak Trip Ratings Program will automatically be entered in the survey sweepstakes that will award 10 winners $500 worth of Amtrak travel.
It was a great experience. How else could I have read an entire Faulkner novel in one sitting?! See my Lit Bit column from last week, "As I Sit Riding," for more about the experience.
And thanks for sharing your experience!
