People are not commenting as they used to before the rules change. I believe that they think that they do not get points for commenting. We do! On days when I do nothing but comment , I get a fair number of points. We get points by causing traffic so that people see the advertisements (where the money comes from): posts, viewing, and commenting. Comments add to the interest of Gather.
I like comments because they tell me who is reading my material. In turn, I try to comment on my commenter's posts. Even a one-word comment says "Thanks for your contribution. I read what you write."
I am disturbed when people change their icons often. "Do I know this person?
I am not here for points, but I like them. A point is like a pat on the back." Be patient with those who are here for points. Some really need the buying power.
I do love Gather!

I've not been around Gather long, so was not around for the change of rules and I don't know for sure what we do or don't get points for...what I do know is that I love conversation and friendly discussion, and if commenting creates conversation as well as points, then I feel we should all comment as much as our time permits.
I agree with you on the icon changing! I definitely link a friend to their icon so when it changes I get a bit confused, and I am easily confused, hahaha! I have three icons I use, all are my pets with Sunshine beneath their image. Most often I use my Tidbit, but occasionally switch to Scratch or Missy.
I'm at Gather for many reasons and yes, points is one of them, but not my main reason, tho' I do love that $50 PayPal!
Just as you - I do love Gatherin' too! :-)
For other people with common names and icons that have nothing to do with anything human, or in a theme, I lose track real bad, myself.
I like Gather very much and I use it to acquire knowledge and information. There are some very intelligent people here and I look for them, because their signature means that the post is very interesting.
About the Internet in General : Some people post wonderful articles in the Internet, but the subject may be very difficult for most people, the subject could be extremely controversial or perturbing. So they receive few comments if any.
On the other hand many articles in the Internet are about celebrities or sports, many articles are very superficial or something foolish and the website has Real Big Traffic, so they get lots of hits and comments.
My advice to all people here : Don't feel sad, or discriminated if you get few hits or comments. Someday you will hit the pinata, and many gifts will fall to the floor.
And don't get sad if you face hate comments or angry comments. You can change friends in Gather.com ....or get new ones more to your liking.

I try to comment when I can ..
I change my ICON for the seasons...
This has nothing to do with you.... ;)
Right now I am turning off my emails so that I can catch up on comments !! So maybe you might see more of my comments then. :D
That being said, comments are down along with views because half the population of Gather has faded away. It's 11 p.m. here and this is my first time on since yesterday morning; the main reason I haven't been on is that I know no one else is around either! "If you build it they will come" ... "but if they don't show up, pretty soon everyone else stops showing up, too". :-(
"Most points are awarded to members who share content that proves valuable to the community. To protect against fraudulent activity we do not share the exact algorithm we use and we change it from time to time. To maximize your earnings, share great experiences in the form of posts, photos, or videos that are popular with other members and that even bring new people to Gather to participate." I do believe we get points for commenting--not many but a few.. We are contributing.
Politics may be only a matter of the latest gossip, or it may be making a difference in people's lives, so many chime in on political posts.
