One of my personal pet peeves is fanny packs.
No one wears these things right on their fanny. They are too small to really hold anything significant. They come in really ugly colors and they bunch up the bottom of blouses and t-shirts.
Who invented these things anyway and why do people wear them?
Personally, when I don't want to carry a purse I wear something with pockets.

I am always threatening to by hubby one if he gets out of line...hey maybe we could use that as punishment for the kids!
Have you ever seen a package of peanut butter crackers that was in a fanny pack after riding the Timberwolf? It's even less attractive than the fanny pack.
I started doing this when I had shoulder problems from the weight of my handbag slung over one shoulder about 20 years ago. I tried various ways of spreading the load but ultimately I gave up on them. For many of the other things you have to do while you are out, the purse has to be set down and possibly forgotten and in a busy downtown situation they can be pickpocketed or easily taken from you. To use a pocket for valuables has the same risks.
Here's another thing: Although many handbags are fashionable and have designer logos on them, if you really take an objective look at them they are not generally aesthetically pleasing to look at nor do they complement the attire of the owner.
Just a little aside here - I found it slightly ridiculous last year when a group of about 7 acquaintances and myself were approached by a person known to one of them with two large green garbage bags. She proceeded to open one and display a large number of Louis Vuitton knock-offs. Most of those ladies went after them like sharks in a feeding frenzy. Some of them were taking a couple for themselves and two or three others for daughters or gifts. To my utter amazement I found that they would be paying about $200.00 Canadian each for these knock-offs.
I may be accused of being jealous and that just because I couldn't afford these items, I am slamming others who can. Sure I am a little jealous about the freedom with money but if I had two, four or six hundred dollars to spare I most certainly wouldn't spend it on a handbag.
I didn't express my amusement to them because I felt it was their business not mine, but what I find somewhat strange is that if a knock-off can be bought in this way, where is the pride in carrying one. How is having one of these a demonstration of affluence - Specially when half the coterie a person is trying to impress got some of them at the same time and the same way they did?
One of the reasons I believe that these were used to demonstrate affluence is that our group comprised sporty tennis playing ladies. We go from the locker rooms to the courts with large bags containing raquets, balls, a change of clothes, etc. They are so roomy that they could contain those handbags and yet they all carry the Louis Vuitton bags in addition to the tennis bags.
I just don't get it...
I must be a strange woman totally - I don't get fashion. I don't get wearing something that doesn't flatter you because it happens to be in this year. I don't get spending lots of money on clothes.
I completely respect the other point of view. If something makes a person happy and reaffirms them in some way that is fine - but it just isn't me.
To wrap up, I find purses clunky and inconvenient. I find fanny pack/waist purses comfortable and very convenient.
Thanks for presenting this topic Sharon. It is interesting to read people's differing opinions.
