I've been doing some traveling lately, that means I've been in a number of airports. I've been consistently frustrated and surprised by the lack of gay and lesbian magazines in the airport news stands. I've asked the folks that work there and they don't really have any answers and it seems only to embarass/upset them. I've tried to think about why this might be the case 1) that the magazines wouldn't sell or 2) there must be some moral problem with selling them; both seem to not have much merit. I can't believe that Out or the Advocate would sell less copies than the nine different versions of hair magazines, the three kinds of cycling magazines, etc. And I doubt that a place that sells 10 kinds of magazines featuring naked women could make a strong moral argument against selling a gay news magazine. I always try and let the folks that work there know that I'd be buying these magazines if they carried them; we'll see if it has any effect.
PS: The image was add in the airport; I thought it was funny that the same places that won't sell gay products will use gay humor to sell products.
