On Saturday the 11th of July I spotted two woodpeckers in my backyard darting from tree to tree. They were involved in some kind of ritual.
Her's a shot of the two together in my mountain ash tree. This is the only shot I got of them together.

I have no idea what held his interest in this shot. He was checking out the bottom of my apple tree.

This one is a male I can tell by the red on his head.

Here he is doing some kind of dance or display. Or threat since I think they were both male.

Back and forth they went for quit a while. Then they were off to parts unknown.

Oh these are Downy Woodpecker
This is a fantastic photo essay, Vivian. I haven't seen a Woodpecker in years.
we have heard woodpeckers around our neiborhood but this is the first time we have had them in the yard.
Thanks Bob
Interesting photos!!!
Thanks Ann
they can do damage but they are pretty!
They can help trees get rid of inescts too. As wll as cause a lot of holes. LOL
Thanks Bridget
I haven't heard a single woodpecker around here all summer. Sometimes they peck against a telephone pole for awhile then go away.
Your pictures are great !!!
I love the sound they make like an old time phone LOL
Thanks Peter
In the winter we have both downy and hairy woodpeckers. It's so funny when one of each is feeding off the same suet cake--like the downy is a miniature of the hairy.
Those are great photos.
They are hard to tell apart even though the Hairy has a much longer bill.
Thanks John
I can't believe some of the pictures you guys take, especially the bird and bug photos. These are great, Vivian!
Thanks Amanda
great pics of them.
Thanks Ryan
The one could have been invading the other's territory. Every bird sets up a triangular area they mark as there own. Trees and other high structures make up the veritces of the triangle. Probably just trying to shoo out the interloper.
that si probibly what it was. I didn't even realize they were bith males until I got a close look at that second photo. They both have red on their heads.
Thanks Lance
I love the little downy woodpeckers! Nice shots, Vivian!
Thanks for posting to *My Bird Shots*!
Thanks Sue
This is a great photo collection My neighbor had one that hammered on his roof. It drove me crazy. I can imagine what it did to them.
I like the sound of them drilling on trees but I'm not sure about my roof ?
Thanks David
Vivian ,some great shots of the woodpeckers ! They can be loud ,can't they ?
Very nice shots of them!
Great shots Vivian. I haven't seen any woodpeckers in a while around here.
Great pictures of Wood peckers, they elude my camera everytime I see them in the yard...because I don't see them very often they always catch me by surprise and are gone before I'm back out with the camera..
Wonderful back-yard visitors!
Great photos Vivian. They dart around so much and are so hard to get shots of. I see one every now and then in my maple tree but he never stays long enough for me to get a shot of him.
Fantastic photo essay! I really enjoyed this, I love woodpeckers, and I have some that visit me each year when I put the bird seed out!
Thanks so much for sharing with my group.
