Some kind of plant

The first summer I was here I chopped it down. You see to me anything that is tall and green and I don't know what it is I chop it down. The second summer, my neighbor told me it was  flowering plant(thank goodness it came back) This year it flowered right at the top. I don't know what it's called.

Looks a bit like a cana - if not, it must be related. Now stop cutting green things down before they bloom - you'll be pleasantly surprised!

I think it's a canna. They grow from a bulb and multiply every year.

Interesting looking. I also do the if its tall , green, and I don'tknow what it is then it comes out.

Try going to a plant catalog website and searching their catalog. I have seen this one before but can't recall the name of it. I think it does come from a bulb. Try checking with the Park, Henry Field, or Gurneys websites.

it is some sort of lily - but I don't think it's exactly a canna lily. try going onto a website and typing in lily and then canna lily and see what you find. At first glance, before I scrolled down, I thought it was a bromeliad, but then I took in the whole photo and saw the next one. Those stalks on top while curled look like bromeliads but they aren't, and when they open up they do not look like any canna lily I have ever seen before. Beautiful lily, whatever kind it is.

Hi Vicki, Definitely Cannas. My grandmother used to grow lots of them in Southern California.
They come in a variety of colors, red, orange, yellow, and even speckled.
Nice surprise to find one in your garden.

It is beautiful--the leaves look like they are related Hostas, but you got your Canna answer.

It really does look like a member of the canna family!

Google \ search a few gardening sites for canna lilies - they are very striking!

I had a plant that I kept whacking down - 3 years in a row.....the fourth year - I did nothing and it turned out it is a flashy Oriental Poppy, grown from seed that I had planted improperly 4 years before!
