I was getting my son ready for school this morning, and my boyfriend Jamie had left for work a few minutes earlier. The phone rings, and it's Jamie...he is at the busy intersection down the street from us, and found a baby bird in the middle of the road. He stopped traffic so it wouldn't get run over, and wants to know what he should do.
So I asked him if there were any other birds around, nope...any trees, nope...he says, "I am in the middle of the intersection, there is road, and cars, and this poor little baby bird" So I told him to bring it to me, otherwise the poor little thing would have gotten smashed.
Now, I could just kick myself for not taking pictures! I was so worried about the poor little thing, that it didn't even dawn on me...anyway, he brings it home, it's a little mockingbird. I know he wasn't learning how to fly, because he had no feathers..just fuzzy. I put him in a basket with some twigs, pine needles and leaves, and took him down to my neighbors house, (she use to work for a vet). She tells me he needs to eat ASAP, and told me to get mealy worms, crickets, stuff like that...then she gave me a calcium vitamin to crush up, to hold him over until she talked to her friend, who takes care of wild animals.
Well, she says she'll call me tonight. In the meantime, I take the bird home, and go looking for something to feed him. I went to the bait shop, and got worms and crickets. Then I had to smash them up....ICK. Have you ever tried smashing a worm with a fork? It doesn't work! lol. So I get this concoction all mixed up, and the little guy loved it, he ate it up, and then fell asleep!
I had to go to work in a couple hours though, and I was scared to death that the poor little guy would die while I was gone, so I decide I need to take him somewhere. I went online, and I find out that it is illegal, a felony in fact, to keep wild animals...even if you think you are helping. So I search, and I find a rehabilitation place in Tampa. I am almost an hour from Tampa, so at this point, it wasn't an option. I keep searching, and find another one a little closer, but still a drive. So I called them. They were so nice. They asked where I lived, and told me that I could take the little baby bird to an animals hospital about 20 minutes from me, and they would go and pick him up from there! This was great!!
So I packed the little guy up, and off we went. When I got there, they already knew I was coming. They were so happy that I brought him. They said that the guy at the rehabilitation center would take great care of him. Then someone came up and took him away...she said he was hungry again...they need food every 2 to 3 hours I guess!
Before I left, they told me I could call and check on him every day if I wanted too! They gave me his 'number'...it's 302. Hope he makes it...they said he was in pretty good shape, so that's good! So hopefully I saved the little guy...well, i already know he was saved once, from being run over. I just can't believe I didn't think to take his picture...he was so cute, boy there mouths open really big too!

Saving our state bird no less:)
We feed them dried dog food softened in water. Has all the nutrients and gets them to intake liquid.
Hope it didn't make too much of a mess :D
Last night around 1:30am I kept hearing a cardinal's short "tweet" outside, so went to investigate. There was a female cardinal in our front driveway walking around. She kept flying up into a tree, then over to the neighbor's front shrubs and back to the driveway. All the time making it's short "tweet" sound. I don't know if it had lost it's mate, a baby, or what, but it was obviously upset, disoriented or something. I felt so bad for it, but there wasn't anything I could do, as it wouldn't let me get to close. I pray it eventually found what it was looking for or it's way "home." I was so stressed it was hard to get to sleep...
