I have two different kinds of woodpeckers that come to my yard. About three weeks ago, I got pictures and video of the big ones that come by. (I will post a picture of one of those too).
Then the other morning when I was leaving to take my son to school, the other kind of woodpecker was up in our dead pine tree. I told my son to be very still and quiet while I went back into the house to grab my camera. I figured that with my luck, the woodpecker would be long gone when I got back outside...to my amazement she was still there! (My son did an excellent job of staying still and being quiet!)

She stated out on one tree...I have a couple dead pine trees near the road, and I leave them up for two reasons only...the birds love them, and it cost us over two grand to get the top half of them cut down and hauled away!

Isn't she beautiful, (or he...not sure)??
Then she moved over to the secon dead tree, where I think she found some breakfast!

She was digging in there for awhile!
I was just so excited that I finally got photos of both kinds of woodpeckers. I could never catch them before...anytime they saw us, they would fly away. I guess they know that they are safe in my yard now. I have tons of holes in my trees too! (at least they are all the dead ones though!)

Here is a photo of the really big woodepecker that came o visit a couple weeks back, (I posted photos, and a video of him and his buddy) Anyone interested in watching a woodpeackervideo, here's the link... http://www.gather.com/viewVideo.jsp?id=11821949021853573

The one in your picture above is a red-breasted woodpecker (yeah, I know, the red is on the head. But that IS what they are called). They are larger than the Hairy Woodpeckers and the Downy woodpeckers that look like this one.
This is NOT the red-headed woodpecker. Those have solid red heads.
I love watching woodpeckers. It doesn't get too funny though if they start pecking at your house (as they used to do to ours before we moved). They are looking for insects, but they leave a lot of wholes behind. That's why it's really GOOD if they go for the dead trees.
