Last week, President Obama met with congressional leaders from both parties to discuss his economic recovery program, despite the GOP's apparent reluctance to compromise on the package. Obama told GOP members at the meeting that they need to stop listening to hate radio host Rush Limbaugh if Congress is to accomplish anything.
"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," Obama told Republican leaders. His scolding of the far right came days after Limbaugh notoriously declared, "I hope he fails," referring to Obama.
Limbaugh fired back yesterday, stating, "I think Obama wants me to fail." The verbal tit-for-tat between Obama and Limbaugh carries a more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. In this time of crisis, the country needs a strong economic recovery package to be quickly shuttled through Congress and onto Obama's desk. Given that Limbaugh carries tremendous sway over congressional GOP, will they break away from him on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act? Or will they continue to partake in Limbaugh's brand of "reflexive obstructionism?"
HOPING FOR FAILURE: Limbaugh's recent comment saying that he hopes Obama fails as president is deeply hypocritical. Conservatives long claimed that any criticism of President Bush's policies was evidence that liberals "want[ed] Bush to fail." For example, during the debate over Iraq, perhaps the most frequent right-wing talking point was that liberals wanted to "surrender." This straw man argument, of course, had no basis in reality. Yet today, with a progressive at the country's helm, Limbaugh is perfectly content saying that he wants the President to fail at reviving the economy. The comment also underscores just how radical Limbaugh is.
Even fellow conservative talk radio host Bill Bennett hinted at disagreement, stating, "The locution 'I want him to fail' is not what you say the first week the man's been inaugurated." Limbaugh also remarked last week, "We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever, because his father was black, because this is the first black president."
FOLLOWING RUSH: Nevertheless, despite his radical and hateful views, Limbaugh has held considerable influence on the actions of the congressional GOP. His role in pulling the GOP away from immigration reform in 2007 was undeniable. His rants on the Fairness Doctrine culminated in legislation from Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN). Last year, when Limbaugh infamously referred to U.S. soldiers in Iraq who were critical of the war as "phony soldiers," the congressional GOP rushed to his defense. Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), for example, introduced a resolution "commending Rush Hudson Limbaugh III for his ongoing public support of American troops serving both here and abroad."
Furthermore, GOP members have long boasted about their close relationship with Rush. "I mean, there's nothing particularly inflammatory about anything Rush Limbaugh says," Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said in 2002. In 1994, former House speaker Newt Gingrich made Limbaugh an honorary member of the 104th Congress.
GOP OBSTRUCTIONISM: In recent weeks, Limbaugh has been mounting a fight against Obama's ambitious recovery package. "Obama's plan would buy votes for the Democrat Party, in the same way FDR's New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat rule," he said last week.
The question going forward is whether congressional conservatives will work with Obama to pass a strong recovery package or continue to buckle under Limbaugh's demands. Thus far, the signs are discouraging. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) -- who said this week that he will not vote for the recovery as it stands -- and Limbaugh have been marching in lockstep in harping on the inclusion of family planning funding in the legislation. Several other prominent conservatives are buckling to their right-wing base in publicly opposing the recovery. Limbaugh has also made Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner his punching bag in recent weeks, upping the pressure around the controversy over Geithner's taxes. Yesterday, Geithner was confirmed by a 60-34 Senate vote. "[C]onservative talk radio rallied a flood of calls to Capitol Hill on Monday opposing his nomination. A majority of Senate Republicans heeded those calls," observes Politico.

If Obama fails WE fail.
President Obama wants to rebuild this country and he wants to do it getting people to work together for the good of the country, by putting aside the hatred and partisanship of the past. The more he succeeds in doing so, the more he displaces people who rely on angry rants to make a living.
So of course, Limbaugh wants him to fail. And I hope Rush someday finds himself without people who think he has anything valuable to contribute to our society.
The truth is that people like Limbaugh are scared. His words and diatribes represent the fear over the ever shrinking influence of White men. If he's so concerned about the direction of the country, then my advice to him and others (conservatives) is to get away from the divisive rhetoric and shady goings on that they've come to be associated with and reintroduce themselves to the American public. Start by doing what Barack Obama did during the campaign which was to acknowldedge that the American people want people who're going to say what they mean and mean what they say.
He IS entitled to his personal opinion but as a broadcaster, he borders on inciting to riot which used to be a crime. Bush probably changed that. Now the lower classes feed on such drivel. He and Bush are typical of people hard-wired to hate and demean because of their own self-loathing. They are unable to think beyond the ends of their noses and see where that has gotten the country. I'm sure many of the older Republican politicians can see through that but the young idealogs... I don't know.
We sure need that "one more vote" to move beyond this lowest common denominator form of governance. ===raising my hand=== I want Limbaugh to fail, because I want our country to succeed.
The thing about compromise is that no one is completely happy with the end results, but that's what happens when dealing with opposite sides of the fence on issues of government, since we are a democracy.
We have a lot at stake! Have we already fogotten how poorly our ELECTED officials handled the bailout fiasco... and that burden is still upon us!
This stimulus package is supposed to be an answer to jobs and infrastructure, yet infrastructure is only 3% of the spending.... and job estimate number can't even be agreeably estimated... How many, when, where, pay scales, need for money to train folks into these positions... questions, questions, questions. Why is asking these tough questions becoming "unAmerican"??
After all, do we really NEED $200 million dollars to fix up the Washington Mall right NOW (for those that are curious... that translates to a whopping $1.5 MILLLION DOLLARS PER ACRE!)
Do we really need $50 Million for the National Endowment of the Arts right NOW (don't get me wrong, I love art.... but our economy is tanking... can we set some priorities!)
Do we really need a stimulus package that creates loopholes that would give the non-profit ACORN access to billions?
Do we really need to include expenditures that won't even be allocated for 3-5-7 years down the road? Why are we going to borrow this money NOW and pay interest to some foreign country while we sit on it?
No one in the right mind would suggest that our economy is not in trouble or that it doesn't need help... but please, the all-or-nothing crap needs to stop. Opposing spending ONE TRILLION dollars is a good thing. Folks SHOULD have to JUSTIFY every dollar of that!
On the issue of Rush... He's a shock jock... entertainment. The assumption that the GOP is going to vote based on his radio show is a "leap of faith".
Your statement that Limbaugh said : "HOPING FOR FAILURE: Limbaugh's recent comment saying that he hopes Obama fails as president..." is a blatant lie.
Limbaugh did not say that! You conveniently did not quote the entire Limbaugh sentence and left off the most important part.
You only have to listen to the program, which is still available for anyone desiring to hear ...what he actually said. What Limbaugh said on that program is that he hopes Obamas intent to lead this country into Socialism fails. He clearly explained that he does not want Obama's socialist ideas (such as national health care) to be put in place, and in that sense, he does not want Obama to succeed.
He never said he wanted Obama to fail. This is hypocritical and a gross lie to present an article such as this which does not contain one iota of actual fact. Shame on you. The proof of this is in listenting to Limbaugh's actual words.
Go for it Rush, we need all the votes we can get. The louder you talk, the more votes the Democrats get.
As usual, it is you that has no idea of what you are talking about.
And you... never have ... in millions of words had one idea of what you were EVER talking about.
The proof of the pudding here is to just listen to the actual broadcast. You can hear Limbaug's words. Exactly what he said. Which is NOT what was quoted here. No one has to take my word for this. LISTEN TO HIS BROADCAST ON THIS.
"So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.” (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here’s the point. Everybody thinks it’s outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, “Oh, you can’t do that.” Why not? Why is it any different, what’s new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don’t care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it."
There you have it.
He clearly emphasized he wanted Obama's plan of Socialism/Liberalism to fail.
Listening to the entire text is the crux. The proof.
As a refresher... Here's your paragraph again...
"Last week, President Obama met with congressional leaders from both parties to discuss his economic recovery program, despite the GOP's apparent reluctance to compromise on the package. Obama told GOP members at the meeting that they need to stop listening to hate radio host Rush Limbaugh if Congress is to accomplish anything."
Another thing - Liberals like Bill Maher have been saying similiar things about Bush for years. It works both ways.
You don't "get to" just pick an excerpt from a speech and twist and turn that to your liking.
He never said, even in your selected quote that he hoped Obama failed as president. He was talking about Liberalism/Socialism.....That is what he was talking about that he hoped Obama failed on. He never said he hoped Obama failed as President.
The point is NOT my opinion of Limbaugh.
The point is being truthful in reporting on what he said.
He never said he hoped Obama failed as president. Only that Obama's plan to lead the country into Socialism failed. You can't twist and turn that any other way.
One only has to listen to his entire broadcast to hear this and know, for sure, what he said. It is still available for anyone desiring to do so to hear.
And as far as staying on point...why is it a problem to ask you your opinion of Limbaugh?
I've long wondered if the Right accuses the Left of what it (the Right) would do if in our place. I don't understand Sophie's point here: Rush didn't like it when he interpreted some comments to mean desiring Bush's failure. When he expresses a desire for Obama's failure in any light, how does that differ?
I charge to do research for others. You are the author of this article....do your own research....but do it completely, and honestly. Something you should have done prior to writing the article. Quote the whole thing. Provide your own links to your own article. It is not my job to complete your work. Limbaugh's complete text is readily available.
My opinion of Limbaugh is not the issue here.
I agree. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but only an idiot listens to an opinion based on nothing but lies and agrees. Limbaugh should not be allowed to spew lies, since his listeners are mentally and emotionally handicapped. As a nation, we should do more to protect them from him.
I'm glad President Obama used his name when issuing the warning. Now, I hope he demonstrates the same stance in announcing that he will not play their games so the "will not prosecute" criterion should come off the table.
I have listened to the broadcast and I still say you are full of garbage. Rush Limbaugh said "I want Obama to fail."

... enjoy!
Mommy-mommy make them stop!---Typical gutless Liberals. Bring it on libs I would love for you cowards to try and stop free- speech in America.
I never intended to come across as "having an attitude," because I don't.
I was only concerned about what you suggested Limbaugh said, which was a lie.
Limbaugh NEVER said he hoped Obama failed as president.
He DID say he hoped Obama failed in his effort to bring Socialism to this country.
THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE TWO STATEMENTS.
If you listen to what Limbaugh said in the link provided above, courtesy of Tammy, who did your research for you ... Limbaugh said, at one point, he wanted Obama to succeed.
Later he said he wanted him to fail in bringing Socialism to the USA.
My attitude was that I think we deserve honesty in these articles. That is, except in Devin's, where that is never present. Honesty is not in your article here, as well, when you say that Limbaugh said he wanted Obama to fail as president. You will never find that in what Limbaugh said.
Now, can you take that statement that I just made above.....
and twist and turn it into .....
Sophie said she wants Obama to fail as president?
Rush can finally shut up.
We need Obama's good sense now (and he is not a "socialist" like that at all).
And why do you right-wingers call everything socialist? Are you against social security and medicare too? What about unemployment compensation?
The above quote is problematic cause the truth is, the things refered to are not even Rush's true opinions. He's just putting on a show, and causing controversy to get attention for his ratings.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I don't think Limbaugh believes (or is sincere in) anything he says. He's a showman
utilizing P.T. Barnum's dictum: "There's a sucker born every minute" to make a good living for himself".
This, above quote, says it all, concerning Rush.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" I want Obama to fail in any effort he might make to bring Socialism to this country".
This quote, above demostrates part of the problem with types like Rush. The primis is false. Rush and his Rovian ilk have falsely framed the debate being Obama's socialism, and it's success or failure. Obama is NOT socialist, for starters.
How 'bout them corporate jets, Mick? How 'bout them spa visits? Bet you were proud of Dumbya for falling into that?
KEE-RIIIIST, Mouse-man, will you get it straight once and for all? When the gov owns the banks and the media--as we've just seen occur in Dumbya's reign of dictatorship--THAT is facist.
Sophie, The fact that you have aligned yourself with Rush, and Mickey, says enough for me.
Rush? THAT drug headed, addicted, hotair bag who does NOTHING positive--EVER--for anyone but himself? He is one of your heros? Damn, girl...drink some coffee and wake up. This is NOT, or should not be, a nation that depends on hate-creation to sell ads.
And Socialism vs. Capitalism? Which style best suits the people? Bush and his war mongers set us up, as a nation, for poverty. He absolutely RUINED our economy. Jobs, housing, insurance, education--do YOU make more than $275K a year? No? Then you, personally will do better under Obama's aegis than under Dumbya's dictatorship.
And if you and Mickey DO make more than $275K a year...why don't you hire someone to censor your comments?
Carla, great article, as usual...But, did you really think you would avoid the Limburger Neophytes in this posting? Do you really think any of them will ever listen to an opinion that didn't spew hate and dischord?
Wilka--Signing off on Rush. Calling his sponsors tonight. Emails and snail mail letters going out. I'm going to pretend I used to listen to him (gag!) and now, I'm enlightened.
The economy is NOT the only thing that will get WORSE before it gets BETTER!
Wow. Nice move O'MAN!
Visability, transparency, economic responsibility, and LOGIC. (PLUS the ability to speak in correctly structured sentences, using real American words...
Yeah! That's what we've been missing for 8 years.

Here's a list of radio stations, by state, that "play" RUSH.
Look up your state, and get to work, cutting the rug out from under Rush.
I love it, by the way...If you Google Rush? Some folks, doing the google search, have "spelt" his name LIMBO! Rush LIMBO! My new tag line.....BRUSH Limbo!
Bottom line is this:
Limbaugh didn't deliver the presidency to his wingnut followers, despite his myriad of lies and slanders.
Unfortunately for the Republicans, in their present leadership vacuum, he's the defacto head of the party.
I hope they do keep listening to the man Jack Cafferty calls a "corpulent gasbag".
Those CEO and bloated skin bags like Limbaugh don't care if the Obama administration succeed because they've got theirs and they have more than they'll need for 10 lifetimes. They piss on the American worker.
I think Rush sucks rotten eggs with relish. I agree let him continue on spewing his hate because I truly do belive that this is an era of change not just for those that have wanted it all along but for those that didn't know they needed it.
I think there is going to be a crossing of lines by many of staunch critic against Obama before it is all said and done.
(Sorry, Carla, I'm not really threadjacking your article....)
and you know we wuv u...

I strongly urge everyone to get Al Frankens “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, A Fair And Balanced Look At the Right” Get the latest print “With More Lies and lying Liars”
I promise it will give new insight of how Republicans are hungry for Limpaugh’s Bullshit lies.
A true blue republican to the core.
The Repubs arfe walking boldly into a trap. Obama's ratings are 70% and has a majority. He does not need the Repubs to enact his legislation. But by extending his fig leaves he forces them to harden into their failed ideology and pander to the base or abandon the radical morons and redefine the Republican message. Either way they lose.
They want to work. They want car loans, and they want to be able to buy their Red, White & Blue beer at the discount liquor store, and their cheap plastic $chtuff at Mal*Wart.
Wilka
They openly claimed that they did not have to admit the opinion of Democrats when they had power, now they throw a temper tantrum when they are given more respect than they gave the Democrats. Obama has treated the Republicans with much more respect than Bush or the Republicans ever treated the Democrats these last 8 years. Sadly there are always people who will demand their unfair advantage or they will have a temper tantrum.
Never assume the "ideals" espoused by any political group regarding fairness and honor will be fairly and honorably applied.
SHE GETS IT...her future is being sold down the river.
And for anyone thinking that Obama's "spend our way out of this mess" approach is the way to go, comparing it to "The New Deal," they should take a close look at history and they'll see that WWII and the resulting manufacturing (tanks, planes, etc.) is what brought us out it.
Liberals have been salivating at the chance to take everyone's money...and now they're getting that chance. And for anyone blaming the Republicans for this mess, remember that Dems have controlled Congress for a while now. Through all this mess. Can you say "Fanny, Freddy, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd..."
Aw, never mind.
And yes, Micky D....get a dictionary.
And Carla, respectively, perhaps you should research the Great Depression a bit more.
