So Much History!

Kathleen, it looks like we got it right for many reasons! Now we have a man that as George SNUFALOPAGUS ;-) just said on ABC is facing the "greatest challenges any predent has faced since FDR" so we have to come together and help him make it happen. Good thing is he reminds me of FDR, Of JFK, Of Lincoln , of RFK and many other great leaders of conviction and charisma and also leadership skills! I think he can make it happen, with our help!

This election was based on race. You said it in your post...as for "lowest common denominator" now quite sure what you mean by that. I have said the entire time that this was an election based on race. Obama played the race card the entire time and when people called them on his BS... he cried like a baby....he was called out because of his BS ...not because of his race....we have not come very far in this country on the issue of race...don't kid yourself....you are gullible...People voted for Obama because he was Black and if they did not voted for him....racist...can't have it both ways....it is what it is....an election based on race....at least I have the guts to say it....by the way I am an independent and voted Republican.....Obama was not the best choice..you will find out soon...that he is the wrong man to lead this country.

No, Elizabeth. The fact that people are glad that a person of color is going to be president doesn't mean that they only supported him because he's black. It doesn't work like that. If it did, all the Republicans would have had to do is select a black candidate. You know that most of the people who voted for Obama would not have voted for a black Republican (unless he was a very, very liberal Republican). The trick didn't work with Palin, after all. She hardly carried the feminist vote, because people don't vote by gender or race, but by values. What you saw here is the victory of one set of values over the other.

And honestly, while I think Obama's intelligence and clarity of expression clearly had a lot to do with the landslide, the Republicans have messed up so badly that any Democrat would have had an excellent chance of winning. You can fool some people some time, but things have now reached the "can't fool all the people all the time" point.

I was proud of both candidates last night. We have received a call from both leaders to work together to rebuild what's broken in this country.

Now, we must do it.

Clearly for Elizabeth it WAS about race. I find it extremely reassuring (and actually surprising, I confess) that the majority in this country is so far from that. We have come a long way since Jim Crow and the beginning of the Civil Rights movement (though it has taken too long.)

I'm proud of my country again, at least for the moment.

Elizabeth, your comment just illustrates what I consider the 'lowest common denominator' mentality.
You had to break this down to your lowest common denominator- race.
I however look at President- Elect Obama and see an intelligent person who is willing to look at both sides of an issue and work with both sides to reach some type of workeable solution that we could all live with.
This became about 'race' when people like you made it about race.

My vote had nothing at all to do with race, but I am very pleased with our new President. I would have voted for him even if he was green or purple.
