TO THE WOMEN OF GATHER: Want Choice in Your Life? Don't Vote for McCain/Palin

Yes, this choice is an odd one. Maybe aimed more at the right of the GOP than women.

Carla, I am in your corner to a point--while I am a conservative liberal and agree about women's right to choose, I believe we need to look at the big picture and not isolate one issue.

She has qualities that I think are worth assessing. I like her attitude about fighting the 'big boy' network. After reading about some of the fights she's had in Alaska, I think she can out smart the big boys even in Congress, although her position as VP won't require that but if she should become #!, it would. This is something I don't think Obama can do. I think his 'sweet, let's sit down and talk' nature would do him in. Ask me, I know, I'm one of those who always tries to make things nice, nice. My mom didn't call me the world's biggest doormat for nothing.

Besides, the VP won't decide anything about Roe vs Wade--that's where the Supreme Court issue comes in.

I like Obama as a person--I would love to see him head up a World Wide International let's everybody getting along program,--he'd be excellent at that. He would be great as a representative to the UN for charitable affairs. He won't be great when it comes to standing up against our enemies.

I hope you will consider more than the woman's issue when voting, especially when the VP will have nothing to do on that matter.

"Choice" is not my only criterion, but combined with the NRA (gun rights), ethics/nepotism problems, etc, I am not impressed that a mayor of a town of 6000 (in an area of the country where even "less government" is "too much government") and new Governor of a state large in territory but small in population has more "experience" than a community organizer and Senator.

I think it is probably most important to note Palin's ties to oil and drilling in Alaska (which is major income for the state). If the McCain/Palin ticket succeeds to the White House, this could have a profound impact on ANWR, pipeline rights/negotiations with Canada, the continuing Exxon-Mobil Valdez case and ecology of the waterways in the area, etc.

I don't like either choice that's for sure.

McCain/Palin will be my choice, Carla.

I don't believe in abortion, but I'm not a single issue person. I do see McCain/Palin as more of the same of the worst president in our history. I have to decide between Nader and Obama. Obama's pick of Biden was a big plus to me.
I think Palin is much better looking than Cheney.

The CNBC show Kudlow and Co quote about not knowing what the VP job entails is the clincher for me. I learned that in Jr. High Civics class.

You can be nice and not be a doormat. I think I'm reasonably nice, but the adjective most people use first is "intimidating." I think it's a shame that people think to win at politics, you have to check your manners at the door. Good negotiating skills can make the other guy think he's won when, in fact, you've won everything you set out to get and then some.

Yes, and if you elect McCain, you can kiss Roe vs Wade goodbye forever. We will be back to back alley abortions by unqualified and murderous shady characters. I wonder how many remember here, what it was like before that landmark decision? McCain has said it should be overturned, and if elected, I am sure, will appoint the two or three new SCOTUS judges that may come up during his first term, that will assure that happens, Palin is just more indication of his intent.....

I would never have or encourage an abortion for anyone unless I believed there was no other way-- which there rarely is. But I can't make that decision for others, and neither should the law.

Keep up the billboards reminding us when the heartbeats, when the fingernails show up. But if a woman has racked her her heart and mind and gets to the point where she is walking into a clinic to follow through with what most of the time has to be one of the most difficult decisions she can possibly make, don't put a picket sign in her face and call her a murderer. Don't make her find a back alley somewhere where the procedure is unsafe and could risk her life. If you try to trade protecting the lives of the unborn with the lives of the born you often end up losing them both.

This is not a one issue election. This article was about the one issue. More will follow. This was a huge gamble on the part of McCain and it will not pay off. People will see through it. The Americans (especially women) will see through it.

And whoever thinks that Obama is too nice and can't stand up to the big boys, didn't see the speech he gave on Thursday. And they also don't know his record. He was one of the few that stood up and said "no" to invading Iraq. That took guts.

It's worse than the "Choice" issue because that is just the tip of the iceberg of choices that today's power elite right want done away with. Their agenda is to entangle us all in their weird cult's definitions of reality, morality, and acceptable American lifestyle, while singing away about being the land of the free. Meanwhile, change agent Obama is working to bring back the home of the brave.

Yes, Libramoon, and if he doesn't get elected, this country will be run further into the ditch than it already is. The Republicans have taken us from a surplus under Clinton to the largest deficit that this nation has ever seen.

I agree that Palin is not a good choice for many things.

Other things to keep in mind are that she opposes same-sex marriage and has been active in the fights in Alaska to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman (amendment passed in 1998) and to prevent same-sex partners of state employees from sharing in the employees' health benefits (she passed the measure as governor but the state supreme court overturned it). She also supports the teaching of creationism in the public schools.

Sarah Palin wasn't picked to lure Hillary Clinton voters - no Clinton fan would touch her with a 10 foot pole considering her beliefs. She was picked to appeal to the religious right, who don't like McCain and don't consider him "Christian" enough for their tastes.

Oh, and let's not forget that she's a big Pat Buchanan fan, and supported him in his presodential run in 1996. Can you say "extremist"?

Choice is not a big issue for me, I vote for character, leadership and skill. So far, she impresses me. I do not consider her an extremest anymore than Obama is an extremist. What has put me off Obama is his attitude toward women. His choice of a typical white male oldtimer as his VP confirmed my opinion of him. He is so arrogant, he refused to look seriously at a women. I think the man has real problems with women and his wife really irritates me. Give me a woman than can manage a family of 7, hold the job as governor and is not afraid to stand up to the old boy network!

Linda, you say that character is the most important thing to you and then you begin to talk about "white males". You come across as sexist in your comments. Don't you want the right person in the job or do you care more for the sex of the person in the job? And Linda, life with 7 kids isn't like negotiating an arms treaty with a foreign country. She's a woman that doesn't first and foremost look out for all women's rights. Oh, She is definitely one of the tough, 'good ole boys' politicians and has shown her spunk on occasion . I'm not saying she isn't a good governor but she is not good material to be the Vice President or a heartbeat away from the Presidency and her record proves it....what short record there is.
I think that McCain severely damaged his chances by thinking that just because he has a woman that ALL women are ignorant of the issues and facts and will blindly vote him in because of her. He's old and sick and I have no idea what he was thinking with this decision. I'm sorry but I do not want someone like him in the White House. It's frightening to me!

Well i don't know that much about her. but I wasn't going to vote for McCain in the first place anyway. I was wishing that Obama would pick Hilary Clinton as Vice President, but I like Biden too.
