Kennedy Offered to Help Soviets Thwart U.S. Policies, KGB Papers Show

(CNSNews.com) - While Soviet troops occupied Afghanistan in 1980, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) worked in close concert with high level Kremlin officials to alter the direction of U.S. policy, according to documents made available through a KGB defector.
Details concerning Kennedy's correspondence with KGB agents are included in the writings of the late Vasiliy Mitrokhin who defected to Britain in 1992. The Mitrokhin papers highlight a meeting that took place at the behest of Kennedy between former Sen. John Tunney (D-Calif.) and KGB agents in Moscow on March 5, 1980.
The exchange of information between Tunney and the KGB is included as part of a report Mitrokhin filed with the Cold War International History Project of the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington D.C. The former KGB man continued to work with British intelligence until the time of his death.
.....
As was previously reported by the Cybercast News Service Kennedy also subsequently made overtures to Soviet officials aimed at thwarting Reagan's military buildup in the 1980s.
Kennedy had offered to help the Soviets organize a public relations campaign in the U.S. that would dilute support for Reagan's policies. Once again, it was Tunney who traveled to Moscow on Kennedy's behalf to relay the senator's proposals.
The particulars of Kennedy's proposals are discussed in a letter dated May 14, 1983, that was sent from the head of the KGB to Yuri Andropov, who was then general secretary. Romerstein acquired a copy of the letter from a contact in Moscow who had access to the Kremlin archives.
"The letter speaks to the degree of opposition and the lack of understanding liberals like Kennedy had toward Reagan's policies," said Lee Edwards, a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation.
"Reagan knew we had to build up our armed forces before we could apply pressure to the Soviets." The notion of fighting to win the Cold War was an alien concept to liberals like Kennedy, Edwards added, because they had grown accustomed to the policies of containment.
A copy of the letter is reproduced in a new book entitled "The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism." The author, Paul Kengor is a professor of political science at Grove City College.

The Washington Times Editorial is especially interesting.
I put this out there because in the past month or so, i've learned a llot about Ted Kennedy. I am only 25, so I didn't know about the whole driving off the bridge and getting a girl killed thing. And now I find that he was actively working against his own government. I don't like to throw around words like treason and whatnot, but I wonder if his constituents would have kept reelecting him if they had known that he was willing to be a "PR" man for the Soviets. I wonder if he would not have been impeached.
But maybe i'm blowing this way out of proportion. Maybe there were a lot of Soviet sympathizers in the U.S. at that time, and Kennedy was just one of the many. I don't know what the atmosphere was really. I wasn't even born yet.

* Feds stall Halliburton bribe probe (bribes paid when Cheney was ceo) (Investigators think the bribes -- totaling $180 million -- were paid to officials in the government of Nigeria for the purpose of winning a multi-billion dollar construction contract.)
* Had the minimum wage risen as fast as CEO compensation since 1990, the researchers calculated, it would now be $23.03 an hour instead of just $5.15. And the average production worker would be making $110,126 a year instead of $27,460.
* Tony Blair's claim that there is no link between Britain's foreign policy and terrorist attacks in this country is blown apart by a secret cabinet memo revealed today.
* The backwoods folk are beginning to doubt Bush
* Indictments, investigations and allegations of wrongdoing have helped put at least 15 Republican House seats in jeopardy, enough to swing control to the Democrats on Tuesday even before the larger issues of war, economic unease and President Bush are invoked.
* (what a surprise this is not) Medicare beneficiaries will have to pay substantially more next year for coverage of brand-name prescription drugs that keeps them from falling into the "doughnut hole," according to a new report that government officials swiftly criticized as incomplete.

Anyway, the article isn't biased. I think it is the truth. The last portion of the article says that they contacted Kennedy's office, but they refused to comment. That usually means that there is some truth there. You say that the article isn't telling the story the way that it happened. Could you tell me how it happened? I'd like to get the "real" story from somehwere.
I'm sorry that you can't even entertain the notion that Kennedy may have done something wrong. I mean, I don't see why it would be so bizzare, it's not like he hasn't had some questions made about his judgement in the past.
Yeah, i'm sure that if I had driven drunk and gone off a bridge killing a young woman, i'd be in the Senate too. No, wait, my poor Black ass would have been in jail for the rest of my life. But Kennedy had already "redeemed" himself a matter of days after that whole incident didn't he? Give me a break.
Ted Kennedy was guilty of having an accident - that's it plain and simple.
Good enough?
Isn't this a great example of the democratic and left wingers ability to overlook anything "their" people do or have done. It is simple amazing.
Case in point Kerry & Kennedy.
He was a peace-nik then and still is. Hated Reagan. He loves Gays and all the dredges of society. It's his guilt for his grand-pappy's wealth running guns and booze.
Can do no wrong. It just shows you the old addage, It's not who you are, it's who you call. He asked the girl how long she could tred water. Told her he'd be right back as soon as he makes a few phone calls. Seems they couldn't produce a chauffer since he was observed driving off that night from a party.
JOE: every where else in Amerika- it's refered to as 'vehicular manslaughter' to say the least. Driving drunk and committing a homicide.
The curse of the generations makes a strong case when you look at the Kennedy's.
He's redeemed himself by being a slave of the Abortionists and other fringe groups and morally questioning and grilling EVERY conservative Supreme Court Justice.
Heathen bastard.
Guys, guys, guys. This is just another example of the we-think-we're-always-right wing echo chamber trying to repackage old news, take it out of context and slant the hell out of it, then use it to demonize (or caricaturize) the evil opposition. From the looks of it, ammunition must be getting scarce.
The 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of the "article" reference the Mitrokhin papers and the report of the Cold War International History Project of the Woodrow Wilson Center, as if they are something new. Guess again. This report came out 4 1/2 years ago. Must've been real earth-shattering stuff.
It ain't. Reading the relevant portion, it is apparent that we're talking about a single meeting between a former Senator (who was close to Kennedy) with some unnamed Soviets. The Senator - remember, all of this is according to the KGB guy who defected and wrote a book in '99 - floated some ideas that he felt SOME in the Carter Administration, some in Europe (West Germany was not happy with the STRONG anti-Soviet positions Carter was taking at the time!), wanted to pursue to attempt to get the USSR to get out of Afghanistan. Of course, Kennedy was looking for an edge in his campaign against (your favorite President) Carter. (Also of note is that he talks about how Kissinger was speaking and manipulating against the stated US positions.)
So, Kennedy's message thru Tunney was that he was going to give a speech two weeks later calling on the US and USSR to enter negotiations and for the Soviets to withdraw 10-20,000 troops from Afg. He asked the Soviets to express approval of his ideas after the speech.
That's it. BFD. If you think Reagan didn't have surrogates trying to start diplomacy with the Soviets, Iranians, etc., you're incurably blind and thick-headed. If you think that sitting Senators from both parties haven't done this - don't STILL do this kind of thing - you're beyond hope. If you don't realize that sometimes this can actually HELP American positions, you're naive.
If you think this helps prove that Kennedy was some sort of Communist spy, seek help immediately.
(((BTW, here is the link to the entire 178-page report. The part regarding Kennedy is at starts at about page 163. (God, I love Google and the "find on this page" feature.) http://www.institute-for-afghan-studies.org/HistoricalResearchCorner/ACFAE9.pdf)))
What do they dig up?
Kennedy spent the war shuffling papers in Paris because he got booted from Haaaavard (the Buckley pronuciation?) for paying someone to take a test for him.
He's a balless murderer and drinks way too much.
