On Wednesday, March 7, 2007 Starbucks Book Break will take place at Starbucks cafes around the nation. Each Book Break location will be hosting reading groups for Ishmael Beah's new book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. Starbucks will provide the place, the complimentary coffee and the pastries -- you provide the conversation.
It's your chance to discuss your thoughts on Beah's latest novel... And hear answers from the author himself! Ishmael Beah will be calling in to talk with readers at fourteen Book Break sessions in Starbucks nationwide. Look below to see if your local Starbucks is on the list.
Many more Book Breaks will be taking place on March 7. Please check with your local Starbucks to find the Book Break nearest to you, or to request a Book Break event!

P.S. I met one of the Starbucks Entertainment Division (I guess that's what it's called) employees at a Bull-Clippers game last month. Networking! Holla!
Seriously though, this sounds like a great story and I want to check it out.

Judy d is right to say that the UN has done some remarkable stuff in Sierra Leone and elsewhere. Because of its presence, a lot of NGOs and sub-agencies have been formed that tackle specific problems that affect a lot of people. Also, because of the UN and its affiliates, we are able to know of human rights violations, statistics of deaths caused by certain diseases etc, that the world is not aware of or is unwilling to know about.
Of course the UN has its shortcomings and I would love to see it work more effectively and react quickly but this doesn't happen because the nations that make up the UN are not willing to make it work effectively. In short, the UN if its member states, nations, especially the ones on the Security Council, want it to work well, it will. However, the UN as it is helps a lot of people and I would rather keep it and improve it than have nothing at all.

Show me a government organization that isn't corrupt on some level. There are problems with any beaurocratic organization. It comes down to the UN is doing something. Is it enough, no. Can they do more, of course. But they are in these countries that need help. I agree with you Ishmael the UN is made up of numerous nations it is not one single entity. It is up to the member nations to come together and make things work.
