yeah, especially with the way our schools are struggling to keep their doors open and their heat on, and now they (mich dem. lawmakers) are are talking about cutting more business tax exemptions out (which means the businesses pay MORE in taxes, which means MORE businesses will leave michigan, which means LESS jobs... this is a vicious cycle that started with the current governor)
but yet it's okay to just give this other money (that was supposed to create jobs) away?

yeah helping out people to keep them from becoming homeless. My God thats a bad idea. Jesus would never want to help out anyone so why would anyone else?

You can give these people all the money you want to, but UNLESS you help them get a JOB you will have to KEEP giving it to them to keep them in a home. Just how do they expect to do that?
Michigan is #1 in unemployment... over 15%, and the jobs started flowing out of the state as soon this (state) administration enforced higher taxes on its businesses. WHY keep a business here when you can do it MUCH cheaper in another state?? There has been a steady flow of jobs out the door ever since.
Giving these people a one time handout isn't going to help anyone...
if they would have used the money for JOB CREATION (as it was supposedly intended) maybe these people might have a chance at staying in their homes.

A HAND OUT instead of a hand UP never worked - NEVER. Now, if that money created jobs - THEN it would have been well spent. If that money had of come WITH a required work and a job from it, then yes.

BTW, Brian, Jesus did help the people but then it was up to them to move on and lead a productive life.

Well Brian, the question is, who is going to pay for it? You got your checkbook ready? I didn't think so. It is not the government's job to bail out anyone, rich or poor.

What's the phrase? You can feed a man for a day giving him a fish, but you can feed a man for life teaching him how to fish. I believe this is what's being referred to. Put the money into a program to creat jobs and train people for jobs, but just giving people money won't fix the problem at hand.

Jennifer - No?? What about that guy that just got a job but the bank wont wait anymore for him to catch up on the back payments or the landlord thats going to evict and wont wait anymore. It wont fix the problem but it is a good start.

Matthew - everytime i pay for something that tax goes to state and federal levels. Income tax. again out of my checkbook. That money goes to fund several programs. It is the governments job to look after the best interests of its people and sometimes that includes a handout or up.

Joy Most people want to work. There are always some that just want to live on the system. It takes time to find a job and sometimes in this economy it takes longer than anyone would want. In the meantime helping Americans sounds like a good idea more than rushing overseas to the middle east (unless there is a direct factual threat) and wasting money to destroy and then rebuild.

That is what I said, they CAN'T work here because there are NO JOBS.
Our state administration raised the taxes so high the employers LEFT the state.
(we have over 15% unemployment numbers... and that doesn't count those whose unemployment benefits have already run out.)
If we don't create jobs for these people, then all we are doing is HANDING OUT MONEY.
How does that help anyone???
Meanwhile my state is a total and absolute mess.
I don't go near Detroit anymore because it's disgusting.
They could have even given JOBS like cleaning the area up to the people instead of just a handout.

For instance, where I donate my time at the local food kitchen, the food is not free. It's cheap, but not free. We don't even give out free meals at all there... BUT if someone is hungry and wants to eat, but has no money, the kitchen manager finds a job they can do to EARN their meal.
These people can find some dignity in themselves by earning their meal, and feel like they deserve what they are getting.
A handout might help someone for a day or two, but have them do something and that handout becomes their WAGE... they EARNED it. Their working for what they get helps them build their self esteem and makes them WANT to do more to better themselves. I've seen it in action and it WORKS.

And also I reiterate what I said before... The whole idea of the stimulus was based upon CREATING jobs. It was NOT about giving handouts.

many people have left the state of michigan in search of jobs. yet we still have the highest unemployment rate in the country. school districts across the state have lost money from decreased enrollment & a cut in state funding. even in a growing job market of health care; here in metro detroit, one of the largest medical facilities (beaumont) is going through it's second round of layoffs. restaurants are closing. gas stations are closing. drug stores are closing. national chain stores are leaving michigan. state police have been laid off. cities are cutting back on library hours & other city services; civil servants are having their hours cut or being laid off. banks are laying off tellers. doctors offices are cutting hours & letting employees go. day care facilities are closing.

handing money out will feed someone for a day or pay one bill. it won't keep people in their homes. it won't keep people in the state of michigan. it won't reopen a day care. it won't pay to bring back a state trooper. it won't bring job opportunities.

I wish If he were handing out money he send some our way.LOL

Just think of those of us that have young children that will never even see social security benefits. I'm not even sure if I will ever see any social security benefits, and I'm only 40. I think they said that anyone under the age of 55 should really have a retirement plan of some sort, because they won't see social security. It's a sad state of affairs.

I agree, I didn't think It would Be there when I got old enough To retire ether, I am 52 I would Not Be On it if I had not had a back injury and blew out two disk and they removed them during surgery and was unable too return too work,I tried and ended up Re injuring my back again, it took me three years too get my disability, I have been on it since 2001, and am glad that I can provide in someway to my family. I only hope that it will be there for everyone's children we have three sons and i worry about that too.

No, I did not. Perhaps someone else said that? I opposed the stimulus bill from the start, as well as the bailouts.

What good is the stimulus doing? More debt (very bad) so that people can spend more (bad- recessions are supposed to cause increased savings).

Bush would not allow a recession early in his term, by extreme deficit spending and inflating a housing bubble he was able to avoid it for the most part. Look where it led us, in 2007-09. Bush (in 08), Obama, Bernanke, and Congress are trying to do the same thing again. We will be very sorry for this real soon. Pushing our economic problems off to the future is foolish and will only result in more pain and suffering.

As for reporting on this.
Conservative sites showed only African Americans in the line and implied near riots.
Moderate newsites, (there are no liberal news organizations, but you are too indoctrinated by Faux Fox to know this)
Moderate news sites reported some fainting from the long wait, some arguing.
You know darn well if there had really been trouble, the riot police would have been there in a nanosec.

joy ~ you know i lean to the left. i know you lean to the right. this issue isn't about right or left; this issue is about how to fix (or in this case how not to fix) the state of michigan. unfortunately some of those on the left are only interested in stirring things up when they see a post from the right. it also happens the other way (right jumping in to try to confuse the left), at least here at gather.
if anyone; republican or democrat or anyone in between, hands money out in detroit....it will be a huge mistake. it will be a waste of resources.

I think this is a good thing, even if it's not going directly to job creation. It's not doing any good allowing more people to become homeless, and this could very well have positive effects; that people aren't thinking of right now.
