this is exactly what I was thinking of writing an article about. remember the last time you were at the dmv? well, that caring person behind the counter will be behind the counter at the hospital. they will have the same blank look on their face when you are explaining why you need attention immediately.

I think the un-liberaled woman blog had something about this recently too. The DMV is something to which we can all relate, and they do seem to be pretty similar from state to state. I do not understand how/why people think that having the government have anything to do with health care will be any different than trying to deal with other government bureaucracy.

I'm already starting to convulse when I see the new ads pimping for government flu shots! It's like we're really starting to enter The Twilight Zone now -- or is it the movie 'They Live'? Maybe this time it should be 'They Lie'!! Thanks for posting this.

You bet. Wonder how much they're spending on posting flu vaccine infomercials? Here in Cincinnati, all public school kids are going to get shots for free - and parents and siblings too if they're "at risk" people. When have they ever done that?

Now substitute "Big Insurance" and see if it still rings true. For some reason all those people want your money and none of them care about your health.

Well, as I've said before, I'd trust insurance over government any day. I have never known anyone who was turned down for treatment with insurance. I have with Medicaid, Medicare and VA health care.

We know that the insurance companies have a vested money interest in not paying your claims. The government has no such interest. After all, it's not their money, is it. It's the money of us tax payers. So the government is far more likely to be willing to pay for your medical treatment than an insurance company.

Now if there were a free market for insurance, that would not necessarily be the case. But there is no free market for health insurance.

Yes, Larry, but being the stupid government that it is, people are given tests they don't need in some cases and they're denied real care that they need in other cases. That's the government for you.

Yes, we do need real free market insurance. We should have had that all along. But you know...Democrats have been quoted - clear back to after WWII - with saying that they WOULD see socialized medicine in this country. During Clinton's administration, one of the people on the health care committee even said that Americans WOULD see socialized medicine one day WHETHER WE LIKED IT OR NOT. That's our politicians. I have no doubt that they're right. One day we will see the government take over every piece and part of our lives. Our history is being erased, so our future generations will never know that people weren't always controlled. Big brother comes true more each day. And the blind still cannot see.

How do you distinguish businesses controlled by government from government controlled by businesses? I see no difference at all, myself. Either way the ordinary citizens are exploited and oppressed. If you fear only government, you will be abused by business. If you fear only business, you will be oppressed by government. Both are dangerous to us and equally so.

Right now, in health care, it is business dominating government. Insurance and drugs are the big money controlling what happens. There will be no meaningful health care reform and we will continue to pay far more for worse outcomes than other nations. We will all suffer for it with a lower standard of living and we will, as a nation, waste a huge amount of wealth and human suffering.

It's enough to make one sick.

Yes, some of the health care "business" needs to be reigned in. But there also needs to be less government control. For instance, we should have always been able to cross state lines to get the insurance we want and need. Personally, I'd like to see us go back to using insurance just for the big things - which would make it more affordable for everyone. And we should all be responsible for our own doctor bills and prescriptions, etc - which would bring the price of them down as well. If a doc knew that he was getting paid at the window instead of having to wait 3 months for insurance to pay, he could charge less.

I wish it was that simple. Doctors are just as human as the rest of us and will charge what the market will bear in most cases. There's nothing like money for motivating greedy behavior. :-(

But Larry businesses can't throw me in jail or fine me if I refuse their services. The government can.

Lasik surgery isn't covered by insurance and I've steadily watched the market drop it's prices over the years as competition has forced prices down. How do you explain that one?

The price of such equipment and training has also come down. Isn't high tech wonderful that way?

Which services have you refused which got you thrown in jail?

Larry, the current proposals of making sure everyone buys insurance will have fines for those who don't get the insurance and jail time if they continue refusing.

well if government mandated health care goes through and I can't afford/don't want to buy it. I will get fined and if that I feel that's unfair or can't afford the fine I could go to jail.

They don't have room in the jails and they cannot afford to keep that many people in jail. Something tells me it's a hollow threat.

Second, I can't see something like that passing Congress.

Third, there are probably constitutional grounds for rejecting such a provision.

Larry, the Constitution has not stopped this administration or Congress yet, has it?
