A group for the KKK on Gather, "Obama Sucks"

September 25, 2009 09:37 AM EDT (Updated: September 29, 2009 12:35 PM EDT)

Just looking at these two pictures from the group's banner, is this ha ha political parody, or pure anti-black racism ???

The Obama pic is subtle unless you know that the big ole malt beer spliced in Obama's hand is a derogatory black drunk ghetto cliche.

As far as how grotesque the President's wife has been made to look, that reaches new historical heights in nasty mocking in politics - the Conservatives are now showing their evil insides, and with loud bold pride.

Usually Presidents' wives are left out of the insults. As awful as Bush W turned out to be in most every way, and the Conservatives complained about how he was mocked for it, his wife was never dragged in.

This is pure mean racism.  And it's racism by the original definition (not the new Republican one) - where blacks are thought of as inferior by whites, and mocked accordingly.

this isn't parody~Peter~this is blatant hatred~racism~and right here on good ol Gather~there's a surprise~not
Dorothy H. Sep 25, 2009, 8:19pm EDT
Well, I managed to find the group. Some of those, I am not surprised to see them as members (I was never connected with them) anyway, but I did find 4 people I am connected with. I don't think they ralize what they've joined up with.

I looked over the photos and they are all bad. I think what the owner of the group has done to these photos of President Obama demonstrates how exageratedly fearful this group is.

The most sad picture was that of a very young Obama, maybe in 1st 0r 2nd grade, had the numbers 666 put on his forehead. Someone who would do that to a child photo is on the demented side.
Dorothy H. Sep 25, 2009, 8:21pm EDT
I didn't see the same banner, though, exactly, but they did leave of the one with the pentegram on Obama's hand, and the religious looking robes, and the nazi picture.

Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 10:50am EDT
You are not trash.

You can live in a trailer that is all rust, and is surrounded with dogs bones and cars on cinder-blocks, and whatever, and not be "trash" in your heart.

You can live in a nice house and pull a big salary and be total trash, for sure.
April H. Sep 25, 2009, 11:45am EDT
So true Peter! It's all in how you act and present yourself.
Vivian P. Sep 25, 2009, 12:27pm EDT

The banner is beyond disgusting and racist.
Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 9:48am EDT
The KKK now has an opportunity to confuse their blatant racism with political discourse, so the evil inside them can just gush out all over for everybody to see.

We know that, but you know Peter, their defense will pull out, "You're a racist for calling me a racist".

Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 9:50am EDT
Gather has its own KKK trailer part, oh my.

Is there a Confederate flag waving out there ???
Spencer T. Sep 25, 2009, 9:53am EDT
I'm sure there is someplace.

Thank you Sharon for naming the circular thinking that goes on by this new breed of racists. It's sort of a "I'll you a racist first, so I win!" mentality.

The old cartoons that I grew up with used to depict all black people as idiots and criminals. For many years, I wasn't sure what to believe. On the one hand, I watched the black people getting on the "L" train in the morning to go to work and on the other hand, I heard so many white people joke around about their lazy and incapable ways of life. After Martin Luther King died, my parents moved us out to the suburbs. Our neighborhood was one of the Chicago neighborhoods that went up in flames followed by looting and rioting. I lived on the "white" side of the tracks and never had any encounters with black people up to this point in my life. I only knew what I saw on the news about the civil rights movement and the words of Lyndon Johnson.

An unintended consequence of moving to the suburbs was that I was sent to an integrated high school. So, I sat in classrooms with black people and made a few black friends. I learned that these stereotypes and jokes were not accurate at all. In fact, I met intelligent and thoughtful blacks who were great fun and just as involved in living their lives with integrity as all of the white people in my family. The times were quickly changing at that time. I embraced the civil rights movement. Perhaps, I understood because I was coping with differing feelings from others due to my sexuality. Dad and I argued about our system of segregation. I believed in integration. It never came to be in a serious way in our society. And, blacks as well as whites don't care much about integration. The civil rights movement changed the laws and altered the culture forever.

These regressive pictures and attitudes are very tiring. People are just people. Life is difficult enough. I mentioned this on another article. My grandmother used to tell us that if we can't help people, don't hurt them. I think that we are so lucky to have an intelligent man in the White House for a change. Is his race really all that important? It isn't what you are that matters. It is what you do that matters. Let's give this elected leader a chance. Racism has no place in society anymore. I would suggest that racism has no place on Gather, either.
Lori Cee Sep 25, 2009, 10:24am EDT
I met intelligent and thoughtful blacks who were great fun and just as involved in living their lives with integrity as all of the white people in my family.

there are plenty of us out here.
Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 10:29am EDT
Sadly, some of us had to leave our very white families to find that out.

People who are nasty will not be able to mock Obama in the usually political ways without their racism popping out.

And to publicly mock his wife's appearance like that just takes new heights in the very low of appalling crass manners.
Purrrrrrrrrrr~Genki dashite~Nantoka naru-yo! S. Sep 25, 2009, 10:22am EDT
the way in which they morphed Michelle's features is the utmost example of racial hatred by the white supremacist movement that still can't get over the FACT that their good ol caucasian male boy LOST THE FREAKING presidential election~
Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 10:26am EDT
I bet Mad Magazine hasn't even gone so far.

I am horrified by the ugliness of the people behind this. Thanks for pointing it out. I would think that Gather would not allow hate speech like this. I remember a local trial where a skinhead killed an exchange student from Africa. The big boy who wrote the paper that incited the skinhead went down with him. Gather can't support this behavior.
April H. Sep 25, 2009, 11:48am EDT
That's what I was thinking Ellie - I know free speech should be supported, but at some point a line is crossed.
Ellie !. Sep 25, 2009, 4:15pm EDT
Exactly, April. Intelligent, civil discussion of issues is one thing we should celebrate. This ugly, juvenile behavior, we should not.

Peter Joseph :

Thanks for this wonderful Information.

We should fight every day against Racism, Homophobia, Ethnophobia, Hatred, and all the Bullies of the World that want to prey on weak people or small people.

These people of "Obama Sucks" are clearly Imbeciles and Idiots. They should have the Hoods and White Sheets of the KKK in their closets. Probably as a legacy of their Grandparents that organized picnics to hang Black Men from trees.

Picnics with children, food and refreshment and even the dogs.

There are books where the photos of these Lynching Picnics are preserved for posterity.

Thanks again Great Friend of Kindness and Humanity !

I'm sure most are aware that Gather has demanded that certain so called "liberals" not comment on certain right wing members posts, yet they do NOTHING about hateful individuals SPAMMING so called "liberal" articles" with attempts to high jack the posts and reframe the articles!

Hopefully a handful of the 100+ people didn't even pay attention to the banner when they signed up. Then at least they could claim ignorance if confronted with the obvious racism in that picture.
I'm not a big fan of screaming "racist" because people across the spectrum let it get out of control...but THIS IS RACISM.

If a child asked why Michelle Obama looked like that how would you explain it to them? I really want to know what anyone in that group would say about it.
Sheryl L. Sep 25, 2009, 10:46am EDT
I would tell that child, that there are bad people who can't find anything to really complain about, so they attack people in this way to make a point that isn't there and its not nice.

I just looked at the membership and some names that popped out I was not surprised, they made no bones about their hate. But, others have surprised me. Some of my friends on there have never shown that sort of hate in their posts and comments and I am just hoping that they don't really understand the hate in this group, or maybe they joined and then never went in to look and haven't seen the blatant racism in there. I hope they look.

Michael Steele (spit, spit!) writes to me on a regular basis...

It gives me a forum to write FROM.

So ask, before we judge others. WHY are you joined to this group of loooooozers?

I was looking at all the Obama groups that are here and I was surprised how many were blatant anti-Obama, but they didn't seem to go as far as this group. People have a right to their opinions but not the right to outright spew hate.

Everybody can be as political as they want, for sure. But if a person can't keep racism out of it then they are very rude.

I hope the Powers That Be shut this down. The PR would be terrible.
Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 11:14am EDT
Or at least make them change the banner so racism isn't a factor.

Yes, it's racist. Racism is the often a fall-back for those unable to cogently state a considered reason for their dissent.

It really makes me sick just how far some people are taking their dislike for the new President. I don't think everyone should just fall in and worship someone, and I don't feel people do that for Obama. However, a lot of people look at those of us who do support him (and I don't do it blindly, and I don't support every thing he does, either, I disagree on some of his stances) as people who are worshiping him as some sort of second coming of the lord. That's simply not true.

Now, I also will say I don't think most people who don't like him are racist. It isn't always about the color of his skin. However, in this case, I think it is, 100%, and it's both disgusting, and wrong.

Shame on people for supporting such a group! You can dislike the president, and even be vocal about it, without resorting to pictures like those above.
De (It takes a pillage to raze a village.) M. Sep 25, 2009, 11:48am EDT
And that is the crux of it Heather. These people can't think for themselves. It's too hard to seriously think over the issues and come to a reasoned conclusion, so they just spew garbage. That doesn't convince anyone to take their side.

No president we have ever had (or will ever have) has been perfect and no presidency has been without controversy but this goes beyond political dissent to hate speech. I don't think we've seen such filth since all the Protestants lambasted Kennedy for being a Catholic. "Horrors! A Catholic president!" *shriek* "It's the end of the world!"

And now he is highly regarded as one of the most effective Presidents. *sigh* And what about the uproar over Roosevelt's New Deal? Also, now considered one of our greatest Presidents.

People have short memories and apparently no one every reads a history book anymore.

They do indeed. in 20 years, when life has moved on as it always does, people will see it differently.

The Obama Presidency has caused the stupid racists to flush themselves out of their rat holes. Before Obama we didn't know they could be that way.

I just looked at the members in that group, and the ones I expected to be there were. Some of my connections are probably in that group, but I don't really "know" all of my connections. Once they get into the hundreds, it's hard to keep up with everyone.

It's extremely rare for me to visit a group's homepage, so I'm not sure what the homepages of all the groups I belong to look like, so I can't blame anyone who joined the group in the past if the bannner was different than the current one. If the banner was the same (as above) when the person joined, then I don't want to have anything to do with that person.

Looks like you shamed them by the spotlight. The banner's been changed. Funny, if they felt justified in putting it up, why change it? Unless, of course, they knew it was blantant racism...
Peter Joseph Swanson Sep 25, 2009, 12:07pm EDT
My pictures here of what they did stay !!!

I have always believed that Racism in its purest sense is a form of mental illness and this group and its members are proof positive of that idea.

I've been aware of this group for some time now. The owner of the group was once on my friend's list. One time I sent a message to all my friends here asking them to join our group, Barack Obama's Presidential Appointments, Bills and Policies.

http://obamasupporters.gather.com/

Well I don't have to tell you about the response I received. I immediately removed him from my friend's list and moved on.

Peter, I'm so glad it was you and not me who posted this article. I would have been called every name in the book and accused of playing the race card.

I'd like to thank you for exposing the deep hatred of our duly elected 44th President. The fact that President Obama is not the first President to call for affordable health care for all Americans and is not the first Pro-Choice President and is not the first President to increase the national debt and is not the first President to want to speak to school children leads me to believe that the hysteria, hatred and lunacy we see by those on the Right runs deeper than just policy. There's something else going on here and I believe that you and those whom responded to this article have hit the nail on the head.

Lloyd C. - Proud Democrat. c. Sep 25, 2009, 12:11pm EDT
Peter I'd like for you to post this article at our group, Barack Obama's Presidential Appointments, Bills and Policies.

I'll FEATURE it for all to see.

I am sickened by the acts of some here on Gather
I have considered leaving because of the idiocy and the vile lies
I recognize hate in all it's forms and truly it hurts me to think that some people can justify this kind of hate.
As much as they want to deny it is racism pure and simple and if they want to turn it and call me a racist so be it , an angry childs temper tantrum doesn't bother me in the least.
I am so glad most of us have grown out of it.

I'll be damned!
Right out in the open - here on gather?

They changed the banner after their group was outed?

DISGUSTING - I find it hard to believe that gather would continue to allow the existence of such a group - it's pure ignorance and hate incarnate.
