Does Cheney have the right to rebuke a standing President? Maybe the question should be, should the standing President slam the previous administration?
Why does Obama not release the evidence found through the Bush Administration's tactics?
I want to know. Cheney asked Obama to release the information which would prove that thousands more Americans would be dead now if the Bush / Cheney Administration had not used the tactics to gain the information. Just yesterday another not so straight forward use of gaining information by the FBI thwarted another terrorist attack aimed at two Bronx Temples, and an Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY.
Now, the FBI must defend itself from entrapment charges. Do the ends justify the means?
I say, "Please, stop tying the hands of law enforcement.
Mr. Obama, if you are so right, let the information gained about these terror attacks be released, or are you afraid that your attacks on the Bush Administration would reveal Bush was right for what he did to keep us safe for seven plus years.
As Mr. Obama is in office, he has had to flip on several of his campaign promises and reckless claims over Gitmo. Now, if he's the man everyone claims him to be, let him release the information on the gains made by the interrogators at Gitmo.
If you don't agree, do you want these terrorists tried in your town? If not, then where?

No, comment just a drive by. Peek-a-Boo, coward!
That was probably me. I did not find anything worth commenting or rating on. Thany you sooooooooo much for the name!!!!!!!!!! An English teacher, huh?
Getting rebuked is part of the job as president. For what little it is worth, Cheney's opinion means to me as much as obama's. Not much.
Please try reading a bit. Thinking a bit. Because until you do, your ranting is merely a bore. As to the pics... boy, are they ever pulling for you at Terrorists R Us... More ammo to make more radicals to kill more American soldiers! Yay!
THINK
Try actually making an argument instead of your typical liberal "dismissive" comment. Because, until you do, your comments are merely a bore. And while you are at it, please take the time to learn to read yourself, Carol did not mention the photos in her post; she mentioned the document that described the effectiveness of the occasions of the water boarding.
Tried that. Gave Up. Also no longer able to recall which Anti-Obama-Cuz- We-Hafta Rant I just read.
Still Bored.
If you're so bored, why are you still here? Is it because you like to be nasty with no brain or thought behind it? Typical garbage in garbage out. But thanks for the comment.
Sarah, sorry the truth doesn't excite you. As far as Gitmo being a terrorist recruitment tool, what was the excuse on 9/11?
Cheney is so tacky right now. He was shunned from his own Party's convention, and now all he does is lip off, reminding everybody of what was so icky about the Bush years, and why they were both shunned.
Obama is working to fix the messes of the Bush W years, and without even knowing how it's working out yet, he just crabs like a grumpy old man.
Obama haters will be amused, though.
... hey, I can reply to myself ... I'm so amused !!!
The clown hat fits you, Peter, and your thought pattern. You and I should be thanking Cheney for our lives and the lives of other Americans. History will prove it so.
I saw the Cheney speech and he's talking to the flag waving idiots. He would have everybody (who is stupid) to think that terrorism started on 9/11 and HE was the hero who took extraordinary efforts to save us from this "new thing". History will prove him a war criminal.
Bush W said he wanted Guantanamo closed. McCain said he would have closed it, and called what Chaney ordered as torture. Not one candidate who could have won the last election would have been on Cheney's side.
Every nation has its VERY OWN prisons and they USE THEM !!!
Cheney only lips off against Obama because he's a partisan jackass playing to the spooked-up idiots who drink up partisan crap like FOX NEWS.
Easy on the box wine Peter!
It's box whine that does this? I thought maybe it was those extra savings vats I see people pick up at Sam's Club.
Peter, did you put tacky glue on him again? What did I tell you about that?! For shame!
Of course we all have the right and sometimes the duty to rebuke a standing (or sitting) President. I have rebuked every U.S. President since 1956 and lots of other government officials as well.
I even rebuked Cheney several times.
I want the hands of law enforcement tied because the alternative is despotism. I want habeus corpus and other legal protections from abuse by law enforcement. The government is too big and powerful as it is. The greatest threat to my life and well being is my own government because they have the most power and the most weapons and they want my money. I am much more threatened by drunk drivers than I am by Islamic terrorists.
I take Larry you don't live in the NYC area. The threat of terrorism hangs over us daily. A big terror bust was just made. A group of muslim thugs wanted to blow up synagogues. Funny, they never mentioned Guantanamo Bay, just that they hate Jews and the US.
Your chances of death due to terrorism are remote. The threat of all sorts of causes of death hangs over all of us all the time. Why worry about those causes of death which are very unlikely? There are plenty of causes of death that are far more likely and that we can do something about.
Here, here, Larry! I'm in total agreement with you. Longitude and latitude is all that separates LA from NYC from Chicago. If you insist on being fearful, there are enough inner and intra city horrors to be fearful about. Good comment, Larry.
Well I guess I'll have to drive by and give you a 10!
First of all, everyone has a right to rebuke a standing president, especially when the press seems to be the president's cheerleading and propaganda department and not the proper check and balance they used to be, especially when a Republican was in the White House. Obama started the first volley against the Bush/Cheney administration. In fact he has in effect attacked every administration that went on before him!
Nothing gets me madder than the arm chair quarterback who looks back at history from the safety of time and plays God over those who had to make the decisions as thousands of people die in front of them. My next door neighbor died on 9/11, but what people forget is that many more people died as a result of the toxic debris released from those collapsing towers, often years later.
The old Murphy Law joke about who gets blamed for things typically ends with "praise and honors for the non participants." In terms of "non participants" President Obama was just a lowly state senator who couldn't even get himself elected to congress. He never had to deal with the threat of an airplane destroying the White House, or the potential danger that other targets would be next! In fact, I think he still doesn't know the full impact of his pledge to protect the people of the United States, except for the fact that (baring ACORN intervention) dead people cannot vote.
Thanks I love those drive-bys.
Cheney is trying to save his skin, nothing more. There are those who would like to see him, and Bush, tried for war crimes.
[chuckle] What a jokester you are Prima! I suppose Nancy (Botox) Pelosi will be right there with them! Oh wait she was to stupid to know she was being briefed about water boarding--clever defense!
this may be the first and only time I agree with Prima Donna, while Cheyney may be a 'fine man' (I don't know him personally so I can't say), but as a politician I have my doubts. I understand why he wants the documents, but I also think he has a grudge against Bush to take care of and will use anything he can in those documents to get people riled up and Bash Bush more than ever.
I think a lot of what went on in the white house during Bush's administration may have been result of the VP, at least in the early years. After Bush refused to pardon Scooter, it pretty much severed any friendship that was left between Bush and Cheyney. No surprises there. Bush was right to not pardon Scooter Libby.
I think the blame during Bush's years can be blamed on a lot of politicians, and people. If, and I believe at one time there was, any WMDS in Iraq, but there may not have been, Bush was listening to the Intel of his advisers.
Where am I going with this, while Cheyney has the right to want the documents, I wonder if he wants them for purposes to tarnish Bush further in the eyes of democrats.
Mooch
Mooch,
Agreed. Good comment. But I have to wonder if anyone could tarnish Bush or Cheney any further at all in the Democrats eyes or in the eyes of the world, for that matter.
Well everyone has the right to criticize a president for his decisions. I think I read somewhere once where George W. Bush had, and I am paraphrasing here, about campaigning on issues is one thing, but the reality of the presidency and the decisions that need to be made is something else. I think every president finds himself at odds with the promises made during a campaign and the actual presidency itself.
You betcha! We all do it every day. "The best laid plans of mice and men..." ;)
I love Obama!!!
It's just tacky politics for the press. Otherwise, those bigwigs can just telephone each other, behind the scenes (and they do), if they really have something real to say.
Stay tuned to Gather. I'm asking Obama to release documents confirming the three terrorist attacks I thwarted this morning.
I trust Obama for now.
I never trusted Bush/Cheney,
Leo which do you think will come first. Obama's spending causing a total collapse of our economy, or a terrorist hit?
Don't you just love Obama's attack on the CIA? Way to go Barry! Release only the memos that make the institution responsible for making us safe look bad. What a motivator!
Obama is saving us from a total collapse of the global economy he inherited. Why is that beyond you?
And how isn't Obama continuing the fight against terrorists? You have no logic.
The CIA was ruined by Bush/Cheney. Obama is now bringing them back. He is bending over backwards to restore law and order to the U.S., AND not hurt their feelings.
You willfully speak in opposites.
Sorry Peter, but Obama isn't saving us from anything....you're giving one person too much power. Besides, what about the debt he's putting us in with the continued bale outs?
No Obama isn't doing it alone. ALL the world leaders are doing a bailout.
And the bailouts are because there is a global Great Depression trying to happen.
But you knew that - didn't you ???
That is correct, Peter. I find it curious that the 60bil monthly war payment is still being paid out...old news, yes, but still current. Why is it ok to spend so much in military, but not ok to spend anything at home?
Kay
"...which do you think will come first. Obama's spending causing a total collapse of our economy, or a terrorist hit..."
- Since you care only about the negative, you'd better pray for the terrorist hit. That won't collapse the nation; destruction and death would be localized;
as opposed to
National collapse, where destruction and death is wide-spread and a way of life gone for those left.
The point is that both are horrendously grim. Isn't it better to think positively and support someone, whether you like him or not, who is at least trying to turn the country away from a further downward spiral? You are sounding like you expect him to exercise god-like powers, of which he does not possess. You can accomplish much in support of your country, if not for him, much needs to be done on the grass-roots level. Stop complaining, and get involved.
Cheney Who???
Hahahaha...the guy who ran the country behind the scenes for 8 years, you mean that guy?
Another airheaded post from the moron formally known as queen.
Too bad all you torture and law breakiner lovers can't go to prison with dick when he goes.
Keep messing with the majority's agenda and watch the trials begin.
Who are you threatening now? If I were to delete a comment, you would be one, but I'd rather leave your stupidity for all to see. Good job proving what hate is vs. intelligence.
Carol, this guy is always stupid. Praise him for his consistency! LOL!
Obama as much said he wouldn't push the issue, and people like Cheyney keep dragging it up. While I appreciate that Bush did keep us safe and prevented another major attack on US soil, I have to say right now if Cheyney keeps blowing his mouth off, I won't be sorry to see him fry.....and the sad thing is that he will drag down everyone he can in the process. To include Bush.
As far as threats, I didn't see the threat in his post, just evil wishes.
While I may at times wish documentation would be made public, i think there are other reasons that information like this has not been declassified. And at this point in time, I think its best that its not released.
Mooch
What threat moron?
True, Mooch. No arguement there. No threat by Hope either.
Above is a fine example of a name calling, threatening jerk. This kind of comment is best for another article. So I thank you.
"The clown hat fits you, Peter, and your thought pattern."
But of course you can dish it out ... just not take it, again.
No threat here by Hope or anyone else. However the very first comment to this article was by you yourself, Carol. It contained a defamation that in olden times ended in a duel. Calling someone a coward is a classic example of how your posts and comments are worded; liberally laced with name calling and insults. Don Rickles was humorous in his insults; people paid good money to hear him. You are neither funny or a draw.
I just wanted you to know that I gave you a one.
This doesn't even make sense.
Cheney isn't in the government any more, and all he's doing is testing the waters for his war crimes trial by spewing a lot of nonsense and behaving irrationally. Why would the president release classified information just so that Cheney can look good?
Bush and Cheney release over 500 Gitmo prisoners, but President Obama is getting major flack from treasonous Fat Heads and spines Democrats about putting 240 in Supermax prisons from which no prisoner has ever escaped.
And your comment about the FBI is just stupid. They've had those criminals under survielance for over a year.
No wonder the Fat Heads lost. Take some oxycontin and keep listening to Rush, you'll feel better.
To mindless Obama haters, logic doesn't matter.
This from a mindless Obama lover.
Erik what the heck are you on? Read your first paragraph on Cheney. "make Cheney look good????" How about telling the whole truth President Transparency? Why are the leftist loons afraid of the entire truth coming out ?
Carol, I gave you a 10. We need to encourage sanity as much as we can on Gather.
Just because a person isn't an utterly superstitious Obama hater doesn't make them an Obama lover - but some people are so stuck in the FOX NEWS type political extremes they will never ever ever get that.
LOL!! Peter you are so funny! You stereotype people you do not agree with and protest when the same is done to you! Hypocrisy is so amusing, isn't it?
YOU called me the "Obama lover" (unless you were talking to the fence post, and that's possible) - Hypocrisy right back at you, then.
ha ha
Kay, what are you doing?
Obama seemed content with the release of the photos until his pal, Pelosi, was pointed at... then, in a very abrupt 180... be decided to not release them. Sorry, I don't buy his "I listened to the military and I'm concerned about the troops" garbage-talk.. the military has been talking since the beginning and Obama JUST NOW heard them? Sorry... I just don't believe his hype.
Obama's transparency stops at what is most advantageous for the advancement of HIS agenda. Why release the memos if you weren't going to release the pics? Why release SOME info on torture, but not disclose the intel revealed that saved American lives?
Obama campaigned loudly on opposition to the decisions of the Bush/Cheney administration. Now he is doing the same things he criticized them for doing. This memo/photo game was his last-ditch attempt to discredit an administration before folks realized HE IS THE SAME!! It backfired.
Yes Tammy. Obama is a left wing Chicago pol playing to his base. He is "transparent" when it suits his agenda. Pity the Obamatons haven't yet caught on.
Yes, the photos show Pelosi with a whip and a chair.
(You can't be so stupid)
The photos weren't released because Gates asked them not to be. I don't think he thought about Nancy.
But Obama haters don't think.
Peter, you have zero idea what the memos contain. We only know of selective memos being released by Obama (against the recommendation of the CIA) that bolsters his case. If you believe in transparency release them all! BTW, bad form calling someone stupid wearing a clown hat.
I will ASSUME they don't contain images of Nancy with a whip and chair.
And if Obama went against Gates' advice, so that the troops had a harder time with their CURRENT wars because of the new flurry of embarrassing photos, then you would have thought that ok - all in the name of "transparency"?
Yeah right.
Obama wants to win the war. You don't? Obama took a political hit for the troops. I hope they appreciate it. You don't.
And who says it all won't be released after the troops are home?
And it's not a clown hat - it's a birthday party hat - so don't be stupid about that, too.
True enough, Peter. Why does everything HAVE to be done on his critic's timetable and not the country's?
oh boy
I'll preface this by saying that I want all of that declassified NOW! I will also say that I find it insulting that Dick Cheney is using oxygen that should be reserved for human beings.
That said, from everything I've learned lately (from sources on both sides of the aisle), these photographs make the Abu Graib pics look like a kindergarten graduation. Evidently, they are so inflammatory that we will immediately lose whatever support from the handful of Islamic countries that we currently have and will most likely, lose support of Christian and Hindu countries as well.
This is a fine line. I think it's another matter of Obama making a pledge without having all of the information. I don't think he personally had seen any of them before spouting off.
If what I have heard is correct, releasing these globally would insure another terrorist attack on U.S. soil from places that aren't currently considered terrorist. If what I have heard about these is true (and that's open to conjecture). I might be tempted to join them to remove the type of mentality from my society that would do such things.
Obama went on TV and said the unreleased photos offered nothing of significance... is this another "misinformation", another "flip-flop" from the WhiteHouse?
If there's nothing of significance, then there is no problem having them printed in Time magazine. From what I've heard from several sources right and left, they are inflammatory enough to start WWIII.
Thank you, Walker, for those accurate and intelligent comments; they are a pleasure to read. I think he has done some leaping before looking, too. I hope there is nothing else that falls within that category. Still, he is the president, so I support him, but with fingers crossed.
Wow is all I can say. Why can't folks just agree to disagree and not sling hate and name calling. I don't get that.
Danielle, who do you suppose started the name calling? The left wing has a problem with the truth, I suppose.
The name calling in this thread started with Carol.
It's just all sad to me that people treat each other this way. What is the point? It doesn't get anyone anywhere. No matter who started it, we each have a choice whether we will engage or not. I have been sucked in to these types of conversations in the past and no one is going to change anyone else's mind so I wonder what the point is, is all.
The threats fly on both sides of the aisle. Nothing new.
Not impressed
Both Parties SUCK! Republicans, and Democrats: F'ing A@# Holes . . And to be honest I am not impressed with that last admin or the current group of LIARS . .
The only way torture could have saved lives is if Curveball (what a name) would have been tortured to reveal he was LYING about W M D's!
After the WMD's fiasco, you'd think the repubs would wise up.
Rude, WMD exist and existed. Why do you go back to this line, again and again, and others go back to this line, when there is no doubt they existed.
Yeah, they are in Iran. Halliburton, under Cheney, sold them all their nuclear technology. What a guy.
Cathi, the loons love delusional thinking. It helps them to justify Obama's incoherent policies.
Do you suppose Obama would have been elected if the teleprompter hadn't been invented?
Iran? Probably more like Pakistan or Syria.
"Do you suppose Obama would have been elected if the teleprompter hadn't been invented?"
- Why did Bush screw up so much even with one?
"...the loons love delusional thinking. It helps them to justify Obama's incoherent policies."
Nice name-calling. Do you realize that you just called 70-80% of your fellow countrymen delusional? Do loons make up all the Democrats, non-partisan and REPUBLICANS who do not agree with you? For gosh sakes, woman, look in the mirror.
I agree Carol -- Cheney can certainly take the President to task if he disagrees with Obama's policies. However to believe that Cheney is credible after lying about WMD's, using torture to build the case for the war in Iraq, and using the justice department to justify torture is laughable. This guy has consistently lied to the American people.
And your proof, please?
And again with the WMD.
Cathi
WMineD
It could be you know! heh!
I say fire all the politicians in D.C. and hire those of us that actually have to LIVE in "real" America ---those that are not allowed to write hot checks, have to live within our means, discipline and raise our own children and in general know way more about what's happening on the grass roots level than an idealog sitting in authority in D.C. I am so sick of American politics I may just have to run in 2012. I might even throw a few "f-bombs" during the debates just to shut the idiots up! I am disappointed in both parties and wish they would both be shut down! I mean, seriously I would rather see a REAL person sharing ideas as opposed to the scripted bull crap rhetoric we get and the spin that follows any "breaking" news story.... ugh...
Heidi!!! Nice call!
How about we disqualify all those who earn more than 200k a year and all those who WANT to be politicians?!
Heidi Cole for president 2012!!!
Joyce, here is an article I wrote on my blog just before the election as to why I should be elected presidet. Oh, by the way, I believe I received 10 votes in the past election --- that's more than most of the rest of America received!
http://heidicoleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/chloes-mom-for-president.html
Kay and Cathi L, WMD's were used in the justification for the war -- even though the evidence was nonexistent. The entire Plame, Wilson, Scooter Libby incident resolved around Bush administration's embarrassment at having the american public know that it had lied about WMD's.
"This is my opinion," Maj. Paul Burney told the inspector-general's office. "Even though they were giving information and some of it was useful, while we were there a large part of the time we were focused on trying to establish a link between aI Qaeda and Iraq and we were not being successful in establishing a link between aI Qaeda and Iraq. The more frustrated people got in not being able to establish this link ... there was more and more pressure to resort to measures that might produce more immediate results."
Burney's account was included in a Senate Armed Services Committee report released in April. Other interrogators reported pressure to produce intelligence "but did not recall pressure to identify links between Iraq and al Qaeda," the Senate report states." ...

They hadn't lied about WMD Baby. We gave them to Saddam and he built from there. He used them on his own people and many others. To say there were no WMD in Saddam's arsenal is putting blinders on. Absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence.
Saddam claimed they had been destroyed after the fact, and who knows how much deceit is in anything he said. But it was important for him to make everyone believe he still had them, even to the detriment of himself and his family.
(CBS) That June 2000 speech was about weapons of mass destruction. In talking casually about that speech, Saddam began to tell the story of his weapons. It was a breakthrough that had taken five months.
"Oh, you couldn't imagine the excitement that I was feeling at that point," Piro remembers.
"And what did he tell you about how his weapons of mass destruction had been destroyed?" Pelley asks.
"He told me that most of the WMD had been destroyed by the U.N. inspectors in the '90s. And those that hadn't been destroyed by the inspectors were unilaterally destroyed by Iraq," Piro says.
"So why keep the secret? Why put your nation at risk, why put your own life at risk to maintain this charade?" Pelley asks.
"It was very important for him to project that because that was what kept him, in his mind, in power. That capability kept the Iranians away. It kept them from reinvading Iraq," Piro says.
If no WMD exist, the real mystery is not how the Bush administration made the same mistake everyone else did; the mystery is why Saddam created the false impression that he had them. Why did he put himself into the bizarre position of simultaneously pretending to build WMD and pretending to hide his nonexistent weapons?
Presumably, his goal was to enhance his position. As The Washington Post's Walter Pincus and Dana Priest speculate, he "may have put in place a double-deception program aimed at convincing the world and his own people that he was more of a threat than he actually was."
Carol,
I'm curious as to what might show up that would "justify" all the tactics used? And as far as trying them in my town, great! Do you think there is such a thing as an unbiased jury in Idaho? They'd just as well cancel the trial and find them guilty by default as to try them here.
Cheney nailed Obama on that one. I watched both Obama and Cheney back to back on C-Span. Both made good speeches, but Obama's rang empty after Cheney spoke.
The liberals are quite angry all thank to Cheney and the irrefutable case he made.
"Keep messing with the majority's agenda and watch the trials begin."
What are you going to do, send Nancy Pelosi to prison? Ya dummy. Hey -- what ever happened to Dingy Harry's "The War is Lost" idiocy?
"He was shunned from his own Party's convention"
He was shunned by John McCain... and you can see how much conservatives just love John McCain. LOL
If you'd like McCain, he's yours.
Thank you! God finely someone I can relate to. Chaney would of never come out but they kept poking him in the eye. So I am glad he did it showed them for the fools they really are. Going after a past administration for their policies is bad. When bush came into office he could of had Clinton for lunch he never took one shot at him. God knows he had the ammo! The Obama people need to be careful, with all toes they are stepping on they may be forced to defend their policies one day. And as for Dingy Harry he is a sniveler an makes my skin crawl.
Liberals = All Democrat, non partisan, Republican and Conservatives that don't agree with what the former admin did, and refuse to accept them as sacred cows!!
I am a liberal! Wheee!!
Woot !!! Liberals rock !!!
Good stuff Carol. I didn't know there was someone here at gather speaking to the liberal loons in the same manner I prefer to speak to them, with contempt and disgust. *chuckle*
What would it be like to be so partisan to actually believe or claim to believe that Cheney, with his past history of lying, whipped Obama in a speech?
They actually thank G W Bush for leaving America the way he did. Need I, or they, say more. Their own words betray them. Their own words give cause to question their sanity.
CNN has a poll out
Who is a more positive influence on the Republican Party?
CHeney got 21%
Powel got 79%
