Thanks for keeping on top of the latest news Kathryn. I heard it on NPR about 30 mins. ago and exhaled a sign of relief! It was a game of "chicken" on the part of McCain and Obama had prevailed - I feel it is critically important the the country gets to hear of the candidate at this time (whether people will actually hear is another story). I have been a voter 40 years and I have NEVER been so scared about an election!

Josette: Game of chicken - EXACTLY. This election is not in the bag for either candidate, yet SO much of the country is dependent upon a good outcome.

GDP grew at 2.8 percent, slower than expected because of flat consumer spending. Why flat or no consumer spending? Gas, food, eats up our money.

Thanks for the update, Kathryn. I'm so glad the debate is on. I believe McCain has really shown himself (and not in a good light) during the past few days (despite his TV exposure and his appearance of doing it "for the country rather than for political gain") The debate will be interesting. I'm hoping he will be less prepared and Obama more prepared since Obama has never wavered from the fact that he was going to be present at the debate tonight.

The Palin interviews with Katie Couric have had me actually sitting with my mouth hanging open at times. The level of discomfort that Palin shows during questions that should not be that surprising is almost scary. The answers she gives are so general and some are just plain ridiculous. You can see her actually trying to pull her words out of an invisible hat somewhere...trying to sound like she knows what she's talking about when it is obvious she has no clue. These interviews have got to have the McCain campaign scared.

Cheryl: Ditto on McCain, Obama and Palin. Yes, McCain and Co are SCARED because they are not well qualified!

The Republican party has left McCain twisting in the wind on this one. They led him to believe a deal was imminent and that he could "put country first" by coming to town and taking the glory for getting over the goal line. Little did he know that Boehner was going to blow it all up.

Now McCain can't stake out a position on the bailout lest he anger one or the other waring Republican faction. And, he has to do an about face on his pledge to postpone the debate with Obama until a deal is done.

They fumbled this one badly. He looks like a meandering old fool.

Ah, McCain is still trying to grab the news to keep Obama out of the news, but that only makes him appear just what he is, a "Flip Flopper" he has changed what he has said so many times over the last two weeks it is not funny. Against bailout, for bailout, our economy is strong, it is not strong, not to bailout AIG, bailout AIG, the only thing you can say about him is that he is consistent in changing his stand from day to day or hour to hour...

He said he was "Suspending" his campaign but not one of this offices stopped campaigning nor stopped the ads being poured out on TV. He was to be the "White Knight" riding into Washington to rescue the economy but all he did was to bring one of his campaign managers to the meeting at the White House while Obama brought one of his senate staff to the meeting...his vain attempts to be the champion of the people are shown to be just what they are "campaigning" self serving not something to help the people he has said he wants to serve...

I voted for Obama/Biden early here in Georgia as well as talked over a dozen friends who have never voted in their lives to register and yep, vote for Obama/Biden and other Democrats to serve us not the rich of this country...

I have friends talking/pleading with their parents who still would prefer the "vintage candidate" (old prejudices die hard!) ... pleading with their parents to PLEASE do the right thing for the love of their grandchildren if nothing else! As for me, I keep paraphrasing Malcolm X... we can't expect he who was part of the problem for decades to suddenly become the solution!

Thanks for the updates, Kathryn! You'll never believe how great the suspense is over here on this side of the Atlantic. We're all sitting on the edge of our seats. What's really distrurbing is the economic situation ... it's a direct result of bad and overconfident American business/banking management of the last 10 years. It will be interesting to see how this particular preseidential election will be directly effected by it all. After all, what happens to the American economy will eventually affect that of the rest of the planet.

Joanne: Yes the econ news is very disturbing and the Euro/Asian press is correct that it is Bush's fault.

And yes, it affects the entire planet. Let's hope Obama can get it back together. Otherwise, a global depression for a decade.

I think it's gonna be a bad time for a decade no matter who wins the election, but I think Obama will be better at navigating through that time.
