Seems Palin's appointment hasn'thelped...
Obama Has Post-Convention Poll Lead; Palin an Unknown (Update1)
By Bob Drummond and Nicholas Johnston
Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama jumped to his biggest lead since late July in public opinion polls, after his Aug. 28 speech to more than 75,000 people in a Denver football stadium when he accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
How long Obama holds the lead is open to question, as voters react to John McCain's surprise selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate and Republicans begin their nominating convention tomorrow in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Obama leads McCain 49-41 percent in the most recent Gallup Poll daily tracking survey, which measured voter sentiment during a three-day period ending Aug. 28. The presidential contenders had been tied at 45 percent in the last Gallup tracking results before the Democrats started their Colorado convention. A separate tracking poll by Rasmussen Reports put Obama's advantage at 3 percentage points.
The 8 percentage-point lead in the Gallup survey almost matches Obama's biggest margin of the campaign, a 9-point bulge in tracking polls conducted July 24-26, Gallup said.

Although Barack is not Hillary he is the closest thing to her politically. On our local radio talks show many women was disappointed in McCains choice, some callers simply felt that McCain believes they vote solely on gender instead of qualifications.
When it comes to qualifications Obama is a honors grad from Harvard Law and Palin has a B. S. from Idaho. More qualifications, Obama dealt with the Chicago Political Machine and they are some of the nastiest players in the political game, by doing this Obama was well prepared to deal with the Clinton machine.
Then there is the media the in Chicago and they take no prisoners, it's as bad as New York, LA or DC any day of the week. Just dealing with the media here gave experience for Obama to deal with the national media. No president can govern without successful media management- just ask G.W. Bush.
I supported Obama but if he would have lost I would be supporting Hillary Clinton because she in the next closest to Obama politically. I would even take Hillary Clinton over Judge Thomas and Condi Rice if she would be in an election against either one in the future because all Condi Rice and Judge Thomas have in common with me is skin color- nothing else.
What bothers me is that the media said McCain met with her "ONE time" before nominating her. One. Not that many people know who she is, and they have two months to get that info out. The surprise will wear off, and folks will realize that:
1. Alaska has the smallest poulation of any state to be governed.
2. Palin lucked out and got elected because of corruption in Alaska.
3. She alludes to Russia as her experience. Huh?
4. What she names her kids does not make her VP material.
5. We will really be in trouble if something should happen to McCain.
6. Because the only foreign affairs experience she has is a relationship with Russia.
7. John McCain is STILL OLD.
I'm still predicting a landslide election rolling in Obama's favor. Sarah Palin cannot stop this movement just because she is a female. Obama is organizing a movement, not a campaign. When will McCain realize this?
He is just a worker there and not even in management. Using your logic the guys who do the oil changes on my car are tied to big oil. lol
OK, was this meant to be serious? Because this has got to be the silliest thing I've read online all day.
Only polls after mid september are worth looking at.
Polls can change drastically from day-to-day and unfortunately, I truly wish we had more than a two-party system in place as the choices to me, just aren't that great. I will be voting for whom I feel will do the least amount of damage and that's never good.
"While I believe Sarah Palin is one tough cookie, I don't believe she adds anything to the ticket. She was chosen because McCain clearly knows he's failing. Most sane women won't fall for this tactic. Hillary supporters aren't stupid, they know Palin is on the opposide of the fence from Hillary."
Anyone, female or male who could honestly support Hillary Rob'em Clinton would in fact, in my opinion be extremely "stupid"!!! You are correct saying that "they know Palin is on the opposite side of the fence from Hillary!!! Hillary represents EVERYTHING WRONG with our current national political scene and I for one am delighted that her campaign is now dead & buried.
Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Monday, September 01, 2008
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 47% of the vote while John McCain earns 44%. When "leaners" are included, it’s Obama 49%, McCain 46%. Those figures are unchanged from yesterday and little changed over the past several days (see recent daily results). Tracking Polls are released at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day and a FREE daily e-mail update. is available.
Obama is now viewed favorably by 58% of the nation’s voters, McCain by 57%. (see trends and other recent demographic observations).
Obama receives favorable reviews from 85% of Democrats while McCain is now viewed favorably by 90% of Republicans. Both men are viewed favorably by 60% of unaffiliated voters. Enthusiasm among Republicans for McCain is up significantly since the announcement of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Fifty-one percent (51%) of GOP voters now have a Very Favorable opinion of McCain, the first time he has ever topped the 50% level in that measure. On Friday morning, just 43% were that enthusiastic about McCain.
Karl Rove effectively mobilized the religious right to elect George Bush through scare tactics and negative ads. Sadly, McCain, once thought to be a maverick, turned to Rove and his attack dogs when his campaign was floundering. He has sold his soul to the devil in my opinion.
If Karl Rove effectively mobilized the religious right, would it be proper to say that James Carville effectivley mobilized the atheist left?
And if McCain has sold his soul to the devil, then he is hand-in-hand with Obama who sold his soul at the Unity Love-fest with Hillary.
I am an independent "undecided" voter but I have to say that Palin on the ticket makes it all that more interesting. I just wish it was a Palin/Jandil or Jnadil/Palin ticket - talk about "CHANGE"...wow!!! Well maybe in four years!!!
Soozan S"
Soozan S - Can you point me to a link so I can see this email?
INDEPENDENTS: Here! Here! AND Hear ye! Hear ye!
Perhaps your definition of moderate and another's definition are not the same. I would argue that there are many moderates who would classify themselves as independents. And many of them would also call themselves Christians!!!
So if one is a Christian who happens to be a conservative then that person does not care about helping people?
Interesting!!!
I would certainly call myself a Christian and also a conservative and an independent. For over 15 years my wife and I have given an annual college scholarship to one graduating high school senior at our local high school to help them get a quality education.
10 years ago, we started a non-profit 501-c in our local community which provides free quality meals to families in need as well as provide a complimentary Thanksgiving Day Meal and a Christmas Day Meal to those who would otherwise be alone...we also deliver around 50 meals to shut-ins on those two holidays and have volunteer families spend time with them so they are not alone.
3 years ago, my wife and I drove to New Orleans after Katrina and help rescue abandoned pets. We leave at 6:0am thisn Thursday to fly down to San Antonio to pick-up our motorhome which is being packed with food and suplies and heading to the Gulf coast area again to be of whatever help we can offer.
I have served on the board of our local animal rescue as well as on 3 other non-profit organizations and contrnbute not only my time but personal finances as well.
I do not believe that I have ever told anyone in need what they should do, nor have I ever asked for anything in return. I am appreciative of the fact that I am in a position to assist.
I come from a long line of died-in-the-wool democrats, and Jimmy Carter was the first president that I was old enough to vote for and I did so because my parents did. My dad not only knew Jack Kennedy but also campaigned aggressively for his senatorial and presidential campaigns. But the Democrat Party is nothing like what it used to be - nor is the Republican Party.
Today, I doubt that either Jack or Bobby Kennedy would be members of the Democrat party any more then I think that Martin Luther King would be a member of the Republican.
With that siad, I find it interesting that the party of "inclusion" and "acceptance" is so quick to label anyone who does not tow the party line as a member of the "religious right-wing" as if being religious and conservative is somehow a bad thing.
Respectfully
You seem like an exception. And I undoubtedly paint with too broad a brush. I didn't mean to make you defensive, but I am tired of defending the Democratic party against charges of atheism just because we are more tolerant of differences. So kudos to you and your good works. If only all Christians could be so caring instead of praying for it to rain on the DNC.
There are people behind these keyboards who should be appreciated for their individuality like John. I think that trying to stuff people into little "mental boxes" in order to understand the wider world is a very dangerous of thinking.
FYI - I am a registered Independent, centrist, populist, moderate, a Roman Catholic, a person who studies Buddhism and a card carrying member of the SDS in my college years.
Yes, you do paint people with too broad a brush. I am sure that is what Martin Luther King, Jr. meant when he said, "judge a man by the content of his character and not the color of this skin."
No one is questioning you, John, or your good works. We are, however, stating a fact -- that the evangelicals were responsible for George Bush getting to the White House. Much has been written about how Karl Rove, his strategist, orchestrated it. The same is happening now.
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!"
-- Rudyard Kipling
I am judging the party by the agends and the republican have not balanced a budget in 25 years of being in charge, they have not initiated the energy that Carter wanted to bring back then and Reagan was the worse by increasing the size of government and wasting money big time.
I think to have a candidate as brilliant as Obama is once in a lifetime opportunity and there are many republicans who agree.
So the party affiliation do not count anymore for me, I look at the individual with brain power ability to lead and inspire the nation to mobilize themselves to make drastic changes, and a new approach to solve problems on all fronts.
Tired of promess that amount to nothing.
McCain is too old and has little brain power for innovation and Palin even less.
It would be a shame if we give the republican the ability to steal more money and fattening the top 10% of the population who owns 90% of the wealth in this country while the rest of use go to hell .
This is nothing compared with the arrogant dictatorship we have seen in Bush and his minions...very close to fascism if you ask me.
The gop has never lived up to their promess and never well.
The other issue is they talk religious but they are not really.
If they were they would not be stealing our tax money to build bridges to nowhere and wasting our money to build a military machine we do not need.
Terrorist need to be fought differently not by occupying other countries.
In the pursuit of imperialistic ideals we have ruined the country and placed ourself in debt of a communist nation.All they have to do is exchange our dollars, they have plenty since american consumerism is never ending, for euros and we would be a bankrupt nation. Weapons are no longer necessary in this global economy to defeat a country, even one as strong as we are.
I admire your service and compassionate outreach, but you need to learn more about economics and the background influence of the monetary system to understand how precarious the situation is.
You all want to make me anti-Christian. I'm not. I work at a Catholic college and my colleagues are some of the best people I know. They live their faith by helping others only according to the need for help. And they don't have much, but they are not threatened that someone else may get more than they have. They would rather pay for food than guns. If they would take over the Republican Party, then America would be a better place. The kind that have are not good for anyone.
Lea, I hold a bachelors degree in business management and a master's degree in economics. I have owned three successful businesses employing as many as 60 employees at any given time. I am 51 years old, retired due to the fact that I have a significant net worth which I made all by myself - no silver spoon - after working my a** off for 35+ years. Have assisted 5 of my former employees in starting their own companies, sit on the advisory board of our local college and consult small businesses in the area to help them become more effective, efficent and profitable.
I believe that I grasp the precariousness of the current situation facing America today.
I also read the U.S. Constitution at least once per week, I have a copy which my late father carried in his briefcase for over 30 years, upon his passing it was left in my care.
So I think I have a strong understanding of economics, business, monetary practices as well as the role of government set down by our founding fathers.
I agree that McCain is too old, but not in age but rather in his time in Washington, I would say the same of Biden. Lea, like you I desire change, but unlike you I want real change away from the corrupt 2-party system which feeds off the American people.
Early on in this campaign cycle I too thought that Obama represented that change - but as I studied his platform and listened to what he said, and how he acted - I realized that he is just the same old party politician in a shinny new suit.
So once again the loosers are the American people...we are going to get fleeced - if not by the republicans then by the democrats.
At least Sarah Palin represents "REAL CHANGE" - by that I mean "a Washington outsider". Remember that before Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton came to town, they were governors of small states with absolutely no previous Washington experience!!!
THE COLOR OF SKIN - I was attempting to make an analogy. If your are a "RED REPUBLICAN" that does not mean you are an extreme, right wing, Evangelical who shoots doctors at abortion clinics.
You started "braod brushing" McCain/Palin supporters as "zealots" until John "called you out" and made you realize that not all Christians, conservatives, McCain supporters, and centrists are voting for a Republican. You even doubted that independents could be moderates? It's the policy postions of Senator McCain that John explained that appeal to many of his supporters w/o regard to his party affiliation. Democrats do not have a corner of the "social justice" market just because they say so.
I am not diminishing your experiences. What you had witnessed in Kansas was horrible! It is more horrible to me because I am a Marine Mom.
All I was trying to say is that no one should make assumptions about either Candidate just because someone calls them conservatives or liberals. It's the issues. It's too important.
I wasn't even saying that all Republicans are zeolots, but that Palin will appeal to those zeolots that were unsure about McCain.. McCain ussed to be what I would consider a moderate. Someone who took a pragmatic, common sense, non partisan approach to the complex issues we as humans face. It's not all black and white. No not every Republican or conservative is the same--just as every Democrat or liberal is not the same. But radical
christians a right-wing Christians are a significant voting block for Republicans, just as secular humanists are a significant voting block for republicans. And those are stereotypes that have a lot of validity.
