McCain surrenders once again, GOP throwing in the towel on 2008

August 29, 2008 11:03 AM EDT

Well, it had to happen sooner or later, I suppose.  The GOP has been an ailing, flailing, wounded duck since 2006, and with the planets and stars all aligning for the DNC in 2008, there seemed little, if anything, that the hapless, corrupt, shattered party once called "the republican party" to do.

In fact, in recent months, they've been reduced to chanting nothing but absurd ad hominim attacks against the democrat's presumptive presidential candidate, Barak Obama.  "He's Muslim"..."He's got a funny name"..."He's not one of us"..."He's the most liberal senator"..."He went to school at a terrorist training camp"..."His father was a terrorist"..."his minister is a terrorist"..."his friends are all terrorists"..."he's too inexperienced," and, after he selected a 36 year veteran of congress as his running mate, "Biden is too experienced"...and on, and on and on.

The critical point for the hapless, rudderless, ethically and factually challenged McCain was to stay completely clear of all issues, at any and all costs.  Up until this week, the strategy seemed to be working...Obama's numbers nudged down slightly, and McCain's nudged slightly upward, even though he's yet to clearly illustrate a single substantive discussion of any important issue of the day.

While Obama's critics had railed him for being all about emotion, and lacking specifics about his agenda, it was impossible to ignore that McCain has only been about negative, dishonest, hypocritical smear attacks, with zero specifics of his own agenda.

Well, last night, the democratic contender not only made history, and did so on the 45th anniversary of another critical, emotionally charged moment in US history, the "I have a dream" speech of MLK (ironically, McCain stood firmly in opposition to setting aside a day to honor MLK with a national holiday...that is, he was opposed to it, until it became politically expediant for him to be FOR it, of course!), but in the process, he eviscerated the very weak GOP candidate with virtually every word delivered.

Beyond the brilliant speech and delivery, the pageantry of this convention, from the moment it opened, was simply spectacular, in every way.  This will be extremely difficult to match, let alone top.

And, to make matters even WORSE for the GOP, it appears that God is no longer a republiCON, either.  In spite of some rightwing loonie toon's prayers to deliver poor weather to Denver last evening, the weather was virtually spot perfect for the event, and it appears that God is aiming a major hurricane, not at the democrats, but instead, directly at the GOP.

As if the republiCONs don't already have enough stacked against them this election year, now they've got to battle God as well.  It's perfectly fitting, is it not?  The party that has abused religion and bastardized the Christian faith for political gain over the past several years is finally getting its due.

There's even talk now of postponing the GOP convention, so that it doesn't take place during what may well be a catastrophic reminder of the republiCON failure of governance during the Katrina disaster.  What more definitive sign could there be that God is NOT voting republiCON this year?

But, I digress...

The point of my article is to address McCain's incredibly lame apparent VP choice.  Don't get me wrong...all of the choices this year were pathetic beyond words, but this bizarre selection of a woman that virtually NOBODY has ever heard of, from a state that doesn't have any chance of swaying other states to McCain signals to me an all-out surrender on the part of McCain and the GOP.  After witnessing the incredible DNC convention, and especially one of the most important and brilliant political speeches in history, it appears that the GOP has just flat out given up.

Who could blame them?  Honestly, watching McCain flip flop like a carp on the dock, hearing his endless outright lies, watching him display a complete lack of understanding of economics and geopolitics, seeing his utter lack of a credible and worthy agenda, and his inexplicible passion to link himself directly and inseparably with the worst president in US history, has been nothing short of incredibly painful for anyone to watch, but most certainly for republicans to watch.  It's no surprise that so few republicans actually like him.  He's pathetic.

Sarah WHO?  Seriously.  Granted, she's a fetching woman, at least in appearance, but who in their right mind is going to pretend that she's ready to assume the CIC role?  Isn't that the first qualification of a VP selection?  That he/she be fully up to the job of the presidency, since that's who would step in, if the need arose?  And, given McCain's rather shaky health and lofty age, it seems entirely possible that, sometime in an assumed McCain term, the VP may WELL have to step in.

So, does he choose someone that nobody would question as a potential CIC?  Does he choose any of the other GOP primary contenders even?  Does he at least choose someone who anybody knows?  Nope.  He chooses an unknown, virtually unproven young governor from a state that nobody really pays much attention to.  This is the equivalent of political suicide, imo.

In fact, about the only thing that I can think of offhand, that McCain could do to more significantly damage his chances of even making this a competitive race, would be to be caught on camera hugging bush like a little child or something...wait, I guess he's already done that, hasn't he?  Suffice to say, this selection is NOT going to help his chances, imo.

Not only does it once again raise questions about his already questionable judgement, not only does it negate the ONLY talking point that they had about Obama, but it also raises the spectre of his illicit, adultrous affair and subsequent marriage to a woman nearly 20 years his junior, after divorcing his first wife.

For these reasons and more, it is my opinion that this very odd VP selection signifies the official white flag of surrender for the GOP.  I commend him choosing a woman, even though it is clearly an overt, cheap attempt to gather votes from former Hillarybots.  Nonetheless, it does truly magnify the significant changes that election 2008 brings to America.  Ultimately, changes for the better, no doubt.

 Thoughts?

Hey, anything is better than Cheney. ;) My problem with her is that she is a Republican. And, I am surprised (not) to see with McCain ready to croak that our national security party thinks a rookie governor whose credentials are commander in chief of the Alaskan national guard, is ready to be next in line.

She needs a new hair-do already. What plays in Fairbanks is not exactly going to fly in LA or DC.

Heck of a job, Brownie! Women aren't that dumb. I am, however, so looking forward to listening to the conservative women haters trying to defend her.

But damn, I won't get to hear Biden debate Lieberman or Pawlenty!!

I think McCain's last minute pick just makes him look desperate. As a woman, I am insulted by his choice. Just another guy insulting my intelligence and attempting to manipulate me.

You COULD just come out and admit that you agree with me, that your party is officially surrendering the white house with this bizarre VP selection. Be honest, the hardline conservatives and neocons are NOT going to vote for this ticket, are they? He may indeed pick up 12 or 14 Hillarybot votes, but I guarantee he'll lose a helluva lot more than that with this pick.

Sarah Palin's a Catholic woman that is pro life, that was picked to bring in the base of the republican party, the Fundamentals Christian like the Evangelicals and the Southern Baptist, and a lot of the Catholics. She has five kids, one of which has down syndrom. She likes to fish.

John McCain needed to do something, and this woman governor from Alaska is it. I feel that McCain did this only because of Hillary, however, I also feel that the republican party also allowed McCain to do this for the future of the party, in case they lose in 2008. The first woman Vice candidate for the republicans I feel will open the door for the future for other women, and to show that the republicans care about women also.

Those people don't like women in power. Hell, they're still pissed off that women can even vote!

"show that the republicans care about women also. "

I predict that it not only won't work, it won't last, either. The fact is, try as this pathetic party might, it is NOT going to shake the racist and sexist image that it's earned, for quite some time. I'd say at LEAST a generation. This is one seriously backwards ass political party.

And someone from the greatly corrupt state of Alaska, no less. WTH ARE they thinking? The GOP is truly a self-destructive (on top of nation-destructive) party right now. Question is, how far can they really shoot themselves in the foot (and brains) before party loyalists say, "Enough", too. Some Republicans have already come forward in support of Obama (aka, people of ethics and moral character - TRUE patriots). How much more damage can these people do to themselves and the nation before Republican voters wake up and stop pissing on themselves?

I honestly don't know if they could've possibly done any worse for a VP selection. Kay Bailey Hutchinson would've been a FAR better choice, imo. In fact, I saw her as McCain's only real hope. He might just as well have called upon Darth Cheney and his 9% approval rating, as to grab this unknown greenhorn. So much for accusing Obama of not being qualified for lack of experience, I guess.

You folks are worried about the inexperience of the Gov Palin in national security issues but don't have a problem with Sen Obamas greeness in national security?

Give me a break!

We'll see. In seeing the response from the hard core left, she probably will be the right choice.

This will be an interesting race!

Winston - I'm worried about a number of things about her, personally. And one is inexperience in EVERYTHING, not just security.

This is a blatant attempt for the GOP to pander to the evangelical right - especially on those who claim to be "pro-life". It's pandering..and it will backfire.

Here are my thoughts.

John McCain seems to "trade in" wives after so many years.

Cindy is still a good looking 50 year old but she is past her prime.

And this gal is HOT.

McCain knows he lost the presidential election so his choice of VP is a love connection in the making.

"but don't have a problem with Sen Obamas greeness in national security? "

Obama's got a helluva lot more experience in this regard than this rather bizarre VP selection, and NOBODY has more experience with it than Sen Biden.

"We'll see. In seeing the response from the hard core left, she probably will be the right choice. "

How so? The rabid right's ONLY real point about Obama was his alleged lack of experience. Even though this isn't really a valid consideration in Obama's regard, it's a FACT that it DID bother many folks.

Now, by selecting a 1-1/2 year governor of a virtually meaningless and sparsely populated state, McCain has effectively removed the experience factor from Obama attacks. Now what is he planning to attack with? Go back to the disproven rightwing nonsense about him being a Muslim? Good luck with that.

Clark, as usual I emphatically disagree with you. Sarah Palin was actually my first choice for Vice President. For starters your remarks about her not being ready to be CIC is preposterous considering Obama's own lack of experience. Obama plans on stepping into the role of CIC on day one, whereas Palin's would only presume those duties if God forbid something were to happen to McCain. I assure you this will not be an argument brought up by the Obama campaing.

Secondly, while you can talk about the corrupt politics in Alaska, and believe me I am very dissapointed that both Stevens and Young won their primaries, Palin has been a fighter against that corruption, even within her own party. She blew the whistle on the State GOP chair who was abusing his power, and she is responsible for the bridge to nowhere never being constructed.

To claim that her choice as VP is the equivelant of McCain throwing in the towel only shows how politically naive you are. McCain's pick of Palin represents the change that Obama only talks about. While Obama chooses a Washington insider who has been in congress for 35 years and has close ties to lobbyist groups, including the one his sone is a partner of, McCain has chosen a candidate outside of the mainstream.

Palin will help sway disgruntled Hillary voters to McCain, while offering a conservative candidate the Republican base can finally be excited about. I would not be surprised to see McCain over 50% in next weeks polls.

I don't think they want to win, in a lot of ways, or they would not have supported McCain throughout the primaries. I don't mean the rank and file, I mean the Bush backers, the shadow corporate government within the government. They want to be able to tie the earlier Bush prosperity (for the elite, anyway), to Republicans, and as memories fade about the last part of his term, tie the pain of the things we will have to do to clean up their mess to Obama, and the Dems. It's pathetic, but it is what they have done, time and again.

I'm really fascinated by this choice, given that McCain's whole campaign is built on the premise that Obama doesn't have enough experience to be President. Granted Palin is only the VP, but given McCain's age there is a much higher probability than normal that his VP would have to step in on a moments notice.

She's pretty conservative, but also a bit of a thorn in the side of the rest of the corrupt Alaskan legislative team (i.e., Young and Stevens), so I'm not sure how she will play to the conservative base. So the only rationale I can come up with that makes any sense is that McCain is going for the "maverick" mythology, which has been under attack given his 95% agreement with Bush.

Should be interesting.

I know that I may be naive, but this is not about winning through marketing. The GOP is bankrupt--abject failure has to count for something. Voters, especially those that live on a paycheck and not a monthly check from Morgan Stanley every month are, well, hapless and hopeless. With McCain's campaign pick of an unknown woman governor that fits the profile to play to disgruntled Hillary supporters, the GOP is again proven itself the party of one sleazy ploy after another. Obama had it exactly right--they know how to wage a sleazy negative campaign of character assassination, but they don't have the slightest idea of how to govern.

and I find it highly laughable, Charles, that the only thing McCain supporters can come up with as a defense for Palin is that she is "no more inexperienced than Obama", which is pretty hypocritical since that has been the McCain Campaign's chief (and false) accusation against Obama from the start>

"For starters your remarks about her not being ready to be CIC is preposterous considering Obama's own lack of experience"

Actually, my comment is the exact opposite of yours. Your party's claims that Obama is not ready to be CIC for lack of experience is preposterous, considering McCain's VP selection. Your argument against Obama's alleged lack of experience is now officially gone. That was my point. I am absolutely convinced that, regardless of how much spin you want to put on it, this incredibly foolish VP choice will NOT pass the experience muster, and will, at the same time, render your arguments over Obama's experience meaningless. This choice officially signifies the end of your only real potential argument against Obama.

"Secondly, while you can talk about the corrupt politics in Alaska,"

I never mentioned it, actually. Alaska is a virtually meaningless state, in terms of national politics, even with its glorious examples of astounding republican corruption.

"To claim that her choice as VP is the equivelant of McCain throwing in the towel only shows how politically naive you are"

I strongly, wholeheartedly disagree. This selection will mark the end of McCain's run. There is simply NO WAY that he (or you) will ever convince those who've already been half-heartedly supporting him, based solely on his mantra of "experience" are going to support his VP selection. Just ain't gonna happen. This is a horrendous choice...one of the worst that he could've made, imo.

"While Obama chooses a Washington insider who has been in congress for 35 years"

Oh, I get it...first Obama is railed against for his "lack of experience," and now he's railed against for his VP selection's "excess experience." Sort of a bit of a double standard, it would appear.

Need proof that you're being hypocritical? Check out your next statement:

"and has close ties to lobbyist groups"

NO senator has been more closely tied to shady lobbyists than McCain. Period. Not only was he immersed up to his eyeballs in a very seedy lobbyist scandal in the 80's, for which he NEARLY went to prison, but he never learned his lesson from that, and has continued these seedy connections to shady lobbyists ever since. His campaign is being RUN by lobbyists, some of whom have conducted business with foreign countries in a manner that is in CONFLICT with US interests!

As a McCain supporter, you might want to play hush, hush on the lobbyist issue. I guarantee that NOBODY is going to pretend that Biden is tied to corrupt lobbyists while McCain is not! Even YOU can't spin that into reality!

"Palin will help sway disgruntled Hillary voters to McCain"

Wishful thinking. Any voters that were allegedly claiming to want to vote for Hillary that vote for McCain, with or without his selection of an extremely dangerous, inexperienced governor from an insignificant state, would never have voted Obama anyway.

"I would not be surprised to see McCain over 50% in next weeks polls. "

Did McCain and the Rovians not know that this woman was currently under investigation, or that her husband works for British Petroleum? This is absolutely beyond bizarre now. Can you imagine what would've happened if Obama had selected someone who was currently under investigation? Unbelievable. Whether she's guilty of anything or not, why on earth would someone who pretends to be an agent of change (even though he's clearly not) want to bring in a potentially corrupt VP selection? Or, what if Obama had selected someone who's spouse was a member of the oil industry?

You have to hand it to the Republicans, this bizarre decision did take the focus away from Obama's performance last night. Alaska's population is about 670,000 people -- about the size of Memphis, Tenn. Palin won the Gubernatorial election in Alaska with 48% of the votes (114,697). With the scandals in Alaska politics she may be the few Republicans left holding office. Think about it, would the mayor of Memphis, with a year and a half in office, be considered to be the President of the United States?

Almost as big a joke as mitt the twit would have been.

Admit it repugs you have no vi9able candidates and no platform to make America better.

All the issues you run on (gay mariage, flag burning,anti-woman) and never tried to change don't resonate with people that are losing their jobs or homes because of your policies.

But the true repugs just get richer and richer.

Pathetic.

She has a bachelor's degree in journalism and was a beauty queen, of course. Beyond that, she's already immersed in a corruption investigation, after only 1-1/2 years in office. That's impressive, even by GOP standards!

"Did McCain and the Rovians not know that this woman was currently under investigation, or that her husband works for British Petroleum?"

I simply cannot believe they are that dumb. It's the classic ploy because this country will have a lot of work to do and the economy will worsen and THEY don't want that office until it's ripe for picking again.

What WERE they thinking? Certainly not about winning! Do ya' think McCain made the selection? If he DID . . . he faces criticism . . . and if he didn't, who's responsible for pulling his strings? Who vetted this one? Who considered how this would sell to the public? Sheeesh . . . they HAVE to be trying to lose.

Really? They also don't think he was a WMD, foot stompin' terrorist because WE gave HIM the weapons we had so he could use them on his own people and attacked him for not being involved in 9/11. Of course, Grandpappy Prescott Bush supported Hitler and not Hussein. Perhaps the distinction is that Bush, not Hussein, is the threat to this country . . . then and now.

I don't know of anyone who thinks Bush is Hitler, nor do I know of anyone who thinks Saddam was. Hitler was the only Hitler. It just so happens that Bush engaged a lot of the exact same tactics that Hitler used to take power and manipulate the masses.

Such great comments! I think the choice came down to addressing the very successful message of change from the Obama camp. What could be a bigger change for the GOP than a woman? As someone said, the old GOP really wasn't crazy about women even voting. (My ex-father in law was upset about that until the day he died!)

This pick smacks of Karl Rove: high risk, but high reward - both utterly necessary to keep the GOP alive and kicking. The rumor was that McCain wanted to pick Lieberman - which made some sense - but his handlers would not allow it.

There's plenty of time to reveal who Palin really is and to remind people that she would be the one in the oval office if anything happened to McCain (remember how scary that thought was when Quayle was VP?).

There's time to delve into the corruption behind Alaskan politics, too. I just heard on mpr yesterday that Palin had made a strange endorsement in her home state.

I can't wait for a debate between Palin and Biden on foreign policy.

No, silly, she has PTA experience.

Anti-choice=anti women imo.

Absofukinglutely! In my opinion, she is also irresponsible for having too many children. And I’m concerned that she will (like at least a dozen other Republicans in recent years) decide half way through her term that she needs to leave that position and spend time with her family.

Wrong, Winston – THIS makes her the right pick: Did McCain and the Rovians not know that this woman was currently under investigation, or that her husband works for British Petroleum?

My question (and I'm asking this in all sincerity) is what do the religious rightwing moms really think about a woman who would leave her infant, disabled son to be raised by someone else while she's busy being the VP, and possibly the POTUS?

This is a tremendous boost for Obama, and I really don't think he even needed one after this convention. I heard Frank Lutz (rightwing pundit) last night, bet that Obama would have a 10 point lead next week, because of this convention. Add another 5-7 for this idiotic VP selection of McCain's.

Yeah, I know it ain't over until it's over, and we've already seen the Rovians steal two presidential elections, so I doubt they'd plan to play it straight this time around. I just can't, for the moment, see this as anything but disastrous for the already-ailing GOP.

There is a lot of oil up there in Alaska. Need I say more? It is more of the same, and personally I think McCains wife is NOT going to get along with his choice. How great she is under investigation. How much more unconcerned can they blatantly be?

I belong to several Groups, Earth Justice, Greenpeace, I sign Care Petition 2 when it involves our enviorment. I wonder who he will get that has ties to offshore drilling. HE needs to give it up. At least Obama is looking to surround himself with intelligence. Like Joe for instance. Four more years, no way for this girl. I am suffering as a disabled person, and millions of Americans lives are changed forever, and for the future as of now, and not for the better. In Saint Louis alone, there are twenty if not more by now, foreclosures per day. Yeah! We need John McCain. Get real. I agree there are decent Republicans out there, but they do not count in their party. It is unified alright, around the dollar bill. Ellen B

"This is going to be a field day for Comedy Central."

No kidding, huh? What a fricking joke the GOP has become.

We've all got very good reason to worry about the DIEBOLD and other electronic machines, BUT, there is progress being made...many states have mothballed them, and many more are strongly considering doing so before this election.

What the GOP has been heavily engaged in lately has been scurrying to intensify their efforts of illegal caging and disenfranchisement. It's entirely possible that upwards of 1 million black voters, who historically vote about 90% democratic, of course, are being purged from eligible voter lists illegally, and there's not a damn thing that can be done about it in time for this election, from what I've heard.

This is also reportedly spreading to whites in democratic precincts. One fellow from Missouri recently called Thom Hartmann's program to describe what had happened when he went to vote in some special election there. He brought the forms of ID that the state requires, but when he was asked to provide ID and he provided the forms, he was told that he didn't have proper ID.

When he pointed out a poster on the wall that said that he DID have the proper ID, he was threatened with arrest. He continued to fight for his right to vote, and was arrested and hauled away. Just like that.

He did nothing wrong. He brought the exact forms of ID that the state required. and, when his civil rights came under attack, he did what ANY American should do...he stood his ground and argued his case. And, he ended up in jail for his efforts.

Hopefully, a massive lawsuit will be filed against the state for this grotesque abuse of power, but it just goes to show how far these people will go to prevent democrats from exercising their right to vote.

I have yet to read all of this, but will place-mark here with the thought that Palin was picked because all of the neoCON base are FOX-TV watchers and thus being so shallow, they will not settle for any woman who does not look comparable to the pundits that FOX owners have used to lure those folks in ... just my thoughts but I expect others have already realized and mentioned this.

Not a bad point, Jerry, but seriously, the loonie toon wingnuts will NOT vote for ANY woman for the white house. Period. It just aint' gonna happen. They'll sit out the election before they'll cast a vote for a woman. These are some seriously bigoted, deranged people we're talking about.

I once worked with a guy who once told me that the two greatest mistakes that this country ever made were women's suffrage and civil rights. Can you f'ing believe that? I just walked away in disgust, but I'll tell you what....it was a helluvan eye opener for me, into just how dangerously deranged and thoroughly putrid these people's twisted minds are. We're talking some SERIOUS hatred.

Assuming this is in regards to Palin's "corruption investigation", you should note that I already Google'd it and am thus confused. There is NO corruption investigation. There is an 'ethics' investigation -- it's a world of difference. And the person making the charge is a drunk, child abuser, threatened to kill Palin's father and verbally promised to bring down Palin. I know you moonbats can do better than this.... wait, no, really, you can't. Good luck with Obama and your government handouts...ain't gonna happen.

Just for the record Sandy, I've been in the tech industry before Google even existed. I assure you I don't need any lessons from a moonbat like Clark.
