I almost forgot in my "upcoming Gaiman" article about Coraline! I was so excited to hear that they are making Coraline into a movie. This entertaining book by Neil Gaiman is about a charming young girl who, after exploring her new home, finds a door that leads her to an alternate world. When Coraline enters the strange alternate universe, she finds an "other mother" and an "other father" who are strangely similar to her own parents... but not. This strange world is so parallel to her own, but everything is a bit off kilter and creepy and the "other" parents don't want Coraline to go back to her real life.
The characters were well written, much like all of the characters in Neil's book - he's an amazing writer. The story, while spooky, is interesting and it's got a lesson in there, too. The age old lesson of "the grass is NOT always greener on the other side of the fence". It's a story for children, but even as an adult, I enjoyed it immensely.
During the Comic Con panel in which Neil Gaiman and others were discussing Stardust, we got the news that Coraline was being made into a movie. I'm very excited about it, even though it will be an animated movie. I was happy to hear that Dakota Fanning will be Coraline... she is PERFECT for the role! It's slated for some time in 2007 and long as things run smoothly! Oh, and the music will be done by They Might Be Giants - how fun!
