Days of Awe:
Turning to do good
By Dr. Joel L. Kushner
Jews around the world are currently celebrating a ten day period called the High Holy Days, the Days of Awe, which starts with Rosh HaShanah, the New Year, and builds to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Our tradition tells us that on Rosh HaShanah, God opens the Book of Life, reviews our page, and decides whether or not we shall be inscribed again for the next year. The liturgy instructs us on three actions by which we might sway God's hand as God decides about our living or dying. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
Caldwell's Corner
![]() | Horace L. Griffin has written a powerful and illuminating book that addresses the reality of African American Lesbians & Gays in Black Churches with the above title (Pilgrim Press, 2006). It is a book that I recommend should be read and re-read by all who value the magnificent prophetic history of the Black Church. |
The book is a reminder that sadly, a Church that emerged from the history of slavery and racial segregation, the Black Church has revealed that despite this history, when its comes to the reality and rights of Black Gay persons in church and society, it can become a carbon copy of the white church that once supported slavery and segregation. From the desk of Dr. Sylvia Rhue:
In September, the United States Senate passed the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Bill.
This was a historic event and very much a result of people of faith lobbying, calling, writing, and working on its passage. Kudos to our colleagues, Harry Knox and Sharon Groves of HRC's Religion and Faith Program for organizing and coordinating clergy from all 50 states to come to Washington DC to lobby for the passage of thehate crimes prevention bills.
A special thanks goes to our friend, Princeton Professor Cornel West, for co-signing the op-ed piece on the hate crimes bill that appeared in the Boston Globe.
