Fabricated fears about hate crime legislation
| |
by Drs. Cornel West and Sylvia Rhue, NBJC
AMERICANS who understand basic principles of justice have no problems with the hate crime bill known as the Matthew Shepard Act. This legislation, now awaiting a vote in the Senate, would finally protect the many citizens who are targeted for violence simply because of their sexual orientation and gender identity, and it would provide law enforcement the necessary resources to investigate bias-fueled brutality.Read entire text here:

Wake Up:
Jena 6 Is About All of Us

by: Rev. Irene Monroe
"Jena 6 is important to LGBT people, because as long as one group of people is being held captive by injustice, we all are. In fact, there is no separation of oppression, only a connection of oppression. Many black LGBT people know all too well the effects of institutionalized racism. The Jena 6 incident would have been a perfect opportunity for non-black LGBT people to join in support and unity for righting injustices.
Sadly, this did not happen. Mainstream LGBT organizations are too timid, hesitant, and in some cases unwilling to address issues of race, ethnicity, and culture. "

NBJC Responds to Maryland Decison
Maryland's highest court upheld the state's ban on gay marriage reversing a lower court decision and turning back the most formidable legal challenge to date of the controversial law. The Court of Appeals held that the ban does not violate the state constitution.
NBJC Response:
From the desk of H. Alexander Robinson, NBJC CEO:
"It is beyond a travesty that Maryland's high court decided to delay justice for gay and lesbian Marylanders. We know all too well that Black lesbian and gay families suffer more harm when our laws fail to protect their families.

Hate Crimes Bill passes US Senate:
The U.S. Senate passed the pending hate crimes bill Thursday that was co-sponsored by Republican Senator Gordon Smith. The amendment would allow federal law enforcement agents to assist states prosecute attacks on gays and lesbians.
The measure is named for Matthew Shepherd, a gay college student in Wyoming who was beaten to death in 1998. The Senate attached the hate crimes provision to a spending bill for the Iraq war. Earlier this year, President Bush threatened to veto a similar hate crimes bill.
ENDA Bill Submitted with Exlusion to Transgenders
A new draft of the Employment Non Discrimination Act now reflects the elimination of language regarding protections based on gender identity. It was introduced on Friday, and a separate bill protecting transgendered workers is also being developed.
NBJC Response:
From the desk of H. Alexander Robinson, NBJC CEO
"As an African American organization we are acutely aware of the compromises and incremental steps that were necessary to realize civil rights for African Americans and that the endeavor to assure racial justice for all Americans continues.
It's time!!
Have you felt it? It's been building for a few years - a willingness of every day people to support the freedom to marry.
And, right now, it's time to act. We're beginning the biggest effort that I have ever seen to open hearts and minds so that everyone can live and love with support, understanding, and acceptance. Are you in? Say yes - because it can't happen without you.
Can we count on you? All you need to do is say "I support the freedom to marry!" Click here:
Let me tell you a little more about what's happening:
NBJC Open Letter to
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:
On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the National Black Justice Coalition we write to urge you to sign AB 43, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, to give same-sex couples the option to marry.
NBJC is the nation's only African-American lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. Our vision is of a nation and a world in which all people are free to live openly and honestly in every aspect of their lives regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.
