According to the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/27/washington/27cnd-gonzales.html?hp Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress and the force behind the law that would require web iste operators to post official government warning labels on their pages or risk being imprisoned for up to five year has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.
Democratic presidential candidate and New York Senator Hilary Clinton recently called for Gonzales to resign http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2948538&page=1. . Probably not the reason he made the move but I am sure we will here from the Senator soon.

I have no idea if Gonzales is a "good man." And you didn't provide any evidence of that either. However there is a great deal of evidence that he lacks the integrity, independence and competence necessary to hold the position of the chief law enforcement officer in the nation.
To say that "all (Gonzales) did was get caught in political cross-fire" reveals that your comments lack the seriousness that you profess.
Mr. Gonzales either intentionally mislead or was seriously out of touch with what was going on in the Department of Justice on his watch. As a executive I am all to aware that I am accountable not only for my actions but for the actions of those who work under me as well. Moreover it is my obligation to report the facts to my Board of Directors no matter how unfavorable, unpleasant or unfaltering.
Growing up in a large family, serving one's country in the military, seeking and obtaining a world-class education are all good things. None of those things however make one a good person. Integrity, honesty, compassion and loving one's neighbor as oneself make you a good person. This may well describe the way Mr. Gonzales lead his life until he landed in the White House and then the DoJ where he appears to have lost his way.
President Bush: "After months of unfair treatment, that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department, Judge Gonzales decided to resign his position and I accept his decision.
It's sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person like Alberto Gonzales is impeding from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons."
That is the truth of the matter for those who still care about the truth.
I agree that Gonzales became a political punching bag and that the politically charged environment revealed the Attorney General's weaknesses and mistakes.
So what?
Katrina revealed the "Brownie" wasn't up to his job too. If it wasn't for partisanship we may never have know that the Attorney General of the United States wasn't the right man for that job.
So let's concede that Mr. Gonzales may have served out his term as an unremarkable Attorney General had it not been for the fact that he served at the pleasure of a divisive president in a White House that has subverted justice to promote their political agenda.
If you recall, there were four hurricanes in Florida in 2004. "Brownie" did in fact do a heck of a job because he had a better orchestra from which to lead. The state of Florida was better prepared. Let's not forget that FEMA was in disarray due to the restructuring under the Dept. of Homeland Sec. (and of course, you have Ray Nagin who was later re-elected, but that's another story).
AG Gonzales had some remarkable moments in that he helped put two Supreme Court Judges. There is a legacy in that alone.
Two justices who do not understand the difference between race and racism.
Indeed a legacy.
