So is Sen. Hillary Clinton just playing politics or does she really not know if gays/lesbians are immoral?
According to CNN:
Sen. Hillary Clinton sidestepped a question about whether she thinks homosexuality is immoral Wednesday, less than two weeks after telling gay-rights activists she was "proud" to stand by their side.
Clinton was asked the question by ABC News, in the wake of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace's controversial comment that he believed homosexual acts were immoral. "Well, I'm going to leave that to others to conclude," she said.
A pretty weak answer to offer up for the thousands of gay activists who have rallied in her corner since her “surprise” visit to the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest gay organization, nearly two weeks ago. There she pledged to put an end to the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” ban on openly gay/lesbian men and women in the military.
In addition Sen. Clinton has in the past worked to defeat the federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. She recently stated to the gay community that "I am proud to stand by your side. Just as you always have an open door to my Senate office, you will always have an open door to the White House."
Given those remarks, it is a bit stunning that Clinton would go numb on the question of whether gay people are immoral or not. Both her waffling as well as her attempt to become a centrist on such hot button issues may take a beating as she is forced by the gay/lesbian community to speak up more ardently against such blatant homophobic remarks.
On Wednesday night, Sen. Clinton released a statement saying, “I disagree with what he [Chairman Peter Pace] said and do not share his view, plain and simple.” “It is inappropriate to inject such personal views into this public policy matter, especially at a time in which there are young men and women in such grave circumstances in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and around the world," Clinton said. However, it's her initial refusal to answer the question that did not sit well with many gay and lesbian activists.
Sooner or later Sen. Clinton will have to wrestle more aggressively with Faith issues and politics as she is forced to speak more concretely versus in the abstract on gay issues in situations that aren’t scripted but instead are more spontaneous and come directly from the heart.
